Ok computer is 20 now! This seven year has a lot of anniversaries. 1967 being such a big year, then 1977. Punk is now middle aged! Ok computer of course makes me feel much older than Sgt Peppers; I finished college in 1997, but Sgt Peppers was around before me.
Well, so far this morning I have had my credit card info stolen/used fraudulently (without the actual card ever leaving my possession) and had the latest windows update turn my home computer into a brick with an orange screen (reboots not helping, have not had time to dig further). So The Falling Rocket (by Stephan Mathieu) seems an apt title.
It's Windows 10 (it updated itself to the all new Windows 10 a week or two ago). In any case, my understanding is that when this happens it is usually not the update per se but some specific conflict on your machine. I am about to head home to face doing something with it. My BackBlaze subscription might be about to pay off...
If life were less busy right now I would actually welcome the prompt to do a wipe and clean the whole thing up. But timing....

My godness, it makes me acutely aware that this could happen anytime. - I hope you get things sorted out.
Thanks, BN. The credit card has been locked down and we did not lose money, just have to wait for new cards (and try to remember all the online accounts that will fail to receive payments unless we update them...)
The computer is more of a journey. I have been learning more about Windows 10. There is basically no way to get into safe mode from boot any more. It is supposed to go to a "recovery environment" after two failed boots, but in my case rebooting kept taking it back to the updates, which then froze, but apparently that counted as successful boot and did not trigger recovery. Then after lots of tries it went to saying it could not install the updates and would undo them and then THAT would freeze but still not trigger the recovery environment. Finally, after an hour plus of rebooting and pressing things and exploring BIOS options I just somehow managed to trigger the recovery environment (I think by doing a hard reboot while in BIOS options?), and after recovery failed, the only viable option was to reset the PC (wipe and reinstall Windows).
Right now I have a little circling thing and "Resetting this PC 1%" for the last 10 minutes. I shouldn't lose files as everything is backed up well, but....
@Doofy, no I know nothing about what caused it (and never will as I could never get the machine to boot to anything better than a blue screen and and invitation to reset the PC to factory state. If you have Windows 10 look into not only backing up the files but creating a bootable recovery USB - apparently that is one of the other ways to get back in when it all breaks.
Sorry to hear about all the computer problems. It's definitely one of those things that you want to be able to rely on during your day of working on things. I haven't had any problems with mine since I got it in 2009. The one before - an 867 Quicksilver gave up the ghost after 8 years and only had a couple of problems during that time. The lifespan on this monitor has been cRaZy long. I've had this one monitor since December of 2001. It still has NO dead pixels - not even one! Wow!!
Any minute now, I've got more storage arriving so as to be able to fit all of this stuff in a nice cozy place.
All in iTunes (since 2001):
That would be almost 14 years of total playing time.
Well, I am just about up and running again. I will say that a clean windows reinstall is less painful now than in the early days of Windows, since it kept all my non-system files intact.
Just made myself a little smart playlist called "surprise me" for albums not played in over three years. This popped up. Never got into the rest of his stuff, but this still sounds good. Weird that it has no reviews on Amazon.

Another good one hiding on my phone. Basically Gary Bartz, now tearing it up with Heads of State, added to Kenny's veteran trio.

Looking forward to seeing this band over the weekend. I hear they are great live, but this is a really good album.

Eluvium - An Accidental Memory in Case of Death. Another dusty oldie.
I wavered on this one when it came out. Right now I am just finding it tiresome.
