HEADSET SEXTET is a suite performed by six headphone-driven vocalists
with taped musical accompaniment (all instruments by Joshua Fried).
In
HEADPHONE-DRIVEN PERFORMANCE performers try to imitate vocal sounds
that are played over headphones. The performers have never heard these
sounds before, and yet they are asked to reproduce the input as it
happens—with every word, pitch and expression accurate and no lag time
whatever. This last requirement makes the task quite impossible and the
result resembles a bizarre unknown, mostly indecipherable language—even
though the source material is, for the most part, plain spoken English.
Here and there an intelligible word or phrase emerges. In some sections,
simple movement directives are added, electronic signal tones cueing
the performers to listen for instructions. To preserve the necessary
element of surprise, each performer can execute a given role only once.
Mock-up tapes are used for auditions, training and rehearsal. . . . .

Great to see some Bobby Hutcherson love here. Is that authentic ring wear of just a stock photo ;-) I didn't recognise the cover at first and then realised I have it as part of the Mosaic Select comp. That is, it's part of the set that turned me from someone who'd vaguely heard of Hutcherson into a drooling fan boy!
@djh It is authentic ring wear from Wikipedia's photo! Grateful to be able to access these albums on the 'Capitol Vaults Jazz' version of the Mosaic set

I don't have any of the big Mosaic sets ...(or do I?....) (yes the Braxton!) but I went a bit mad on the Select sets a few years back. I think I imported them from a US shop, for the life of me I can't remember who. In fact I don't even know if the series is still ongoing.

ETA The piece builds up to a truely amazing cacophonic crescendo and lands slowly and firmly on "its feets"
