Enjoying this ever more on repeated listens, esp since I saw them a few weeks ago. If Jon Irabagon ever comes to your town, go see him.
ETA, a good track to check out is "We Had It All." While the trio sound is a bit 'stripped down,' they stay closer to the melody than you sometimes hear. Naturally at the live show they stretched out more, but somehow built more energy by repeating the tune, rather than just blasting off into outer space. Interesting to note in that regard that Rudy has long played with Bill Frisell.
ETA, Durand albums often seem to have wonderful lists of instruments used:
Federico Durand : ARP Odyssey, Auris Lyre, acoustic guitar, El Capistan, Count To Five, Roland Space Echo RE-201, Electro Harmonix 2880, tape-loops, bells, keys, black pencil, contact and condenser microphones & small wooden-frog.
@amclark2 Twould be great to see MOPDTK. This was my 2nd time seeing Jon - I saw him over the summer filling the late Billy Bang's spot in the FAB trio !
Quite a list of names in this good late-year release. Gary Bartz and the 'Heads of State' have a new Smoke Session coming up in March
Doofy - this conversation prompted me to look around a little and it turns out MODtK will be in my town in Feb! (As a piano trio, but still); will have to try to check it out
@greg, sample the Marsalis first. I am listening to it because a friend lent it to me and it is an Important Work, but it's not really my favorite thing.
