Conceived by Susan Stenger (of Band of Susans) especially for the
South Bank's American Independents Festival, a gathering of mutant
offspring from the worlds of rock and electronics pay homage to their
common ancestors with an exceptional programme of classics of American
experimental music.
The Brood featured Scanner and Panasonic, as well as members of Band of Susans, Elastica, Gallon Drunk, LMC and Wire.
Recorded live at The Purcell Room, London, Wednesday 6th November 1996
Horace Parlan died yesterday evening – February 23rd – peacefully in his sleep. A few blood clots ended his life at the nursing home where he spent his last couple of years.
Here in Denmark we will remember him as a very sweet and embracing person that always had something to say in music. Among his latest albums I especially treasure his solo album “Voyage of Discovery” (1999), “Relaxin’ with Horace” with Ed Thigpen and Jesper Lundgaard (2003) and “My Little Brown Book” with Christina von Bülow (as) and Jesper Lundgaard.
I recently finished reading Swim Through the Darkness: My Search for Craig Smith and the Mystery of Maitreya Kali by Michael Stax. Smith was the all American boy, background singer on the Andy Williams show, and near miss for a role in the Monkees. LSD and a dangerous trip to India nearly killed him, and he ended up as homeless in Hollywood for years.
This is the end result of Smith's troubles, self produced and limited a a few hundred records in 1972. Some beautiful psychedelic music along with some real early 70s weirdness. Read the book listen to the music.
