More from the UK jazz scene, heard this on BBC 6 radio this morning and streaming now. For 2021 decided to cut down on the sheer amount of music to buy and going for quality over quantity but this is will be on the list for the end of month purchases. Although not a great fan of Spotify it does help you listen to albums before buying, especially if they are on Bandcamp
When you listen to a David Darling composition, you quickly realize that
what you’re experiencing is similar to standing in front of a Da Vinci
or a Rodin. A feeling of exquisite beauty wraps around you, leaving you
speechless. You never find yourself asking how is this done or what
makes this beautiful. It’s a feeling of simple enjoyment in its purest
state. David’s cello work is always the feature. There is some light
accompaniment throughout. The sound is at once organic, etherial and
liquid, and before you know it, you’ve fallen deeply into it. From the
first notes of“Laughing At The Moon,” with its playful kalimba rhythm,
you set off on a journey that takes you through many emotional states.
The song is pure joy, with each instrument playing with the other like
children in a field whose imaginations have been set free. The album
progresses at a gentle pace, ending with “Untold Beauty,” whose title
sums up the entire record.
- This is the first time I spend time with David Darling's music . . .
Barefoot Jerry 1971 to 1977 band whose style has been described as a fusion of country music and progressive rock, and as a seminal Southern rock band. While sifting through some bargain racks this album cover leapt out at me as it described my favourite pastime. Back then and still now.
- "My latest recording is Homage to Kindness,
released through Hearts of Space Records. My hope for this recording is to encourage the expression of kindness in the world
in these difficult times."
Thanks for the introduction Lowlife, like you I am streaming. I looked at Bandcamp £9.99, but at Amazon £7.95. I don't understand such pricing policy. I'd buy at say £5 to 6, but not much higher for something I may only play a few times, if previous similar such purchases from eMusic show. I'll rely on streaming and the artist gets much less. At £9.99 fewer artists will get my purchase as my muisc spending does have limitations.
I've been meaning for some time to read Cockburn's autobiography and listen to all the albums at the appropriate points. Maybe I'll finally get to that this year.
- "I bought this little handmade clay flute in 1982, which means this must
be the single oldest instrument that I own. It cost 5 Dutch guilders at
the time (roughly 2,50 euro, I suppose). It’s certainly the only item
from 1982 that I have in my entire house. I made one of my first
recordings with this flute, and I still use it every now and then in
combination with electronic treatments.
On one occasion the flute slipped through my fingers and fell to the
floor, but surprisingly it didn’t break. Another time I had this
admittedly stupid plan, which was to change the color, and an even more
stupid plan, which was to use fire to do so. I figured the fire would
remove the original color. It didn’t work, but it didn’t hurt it,
either, fortunately. The flute still has its original color, and it is
still working fine. These days I am very careful with it, and I
appreciate that this little instrument is still with me.
This material originated as something I made for a project that didn’t
work out. At first I wasn’t sure what, if anything, to do with it, but
then I realized I like it just as it is. I decided to not add anything,
and to instead simply mix these six tracks (two for each part, as this
piece is basically in three parts) together into one file. That file
then became this EP."
Domino is proud to present Henryk Górecki: Symphony No. 3 (Symphony of
Sorrowful Songs) performed by Beth Gibbons and the Polish
National Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Krzysztof Penderecki.
The performance took place at The National Opera Grand Theatre in Warsaw on
November 29th 2014. In advance of the concert, Beth Gibbons undertook
an intense preparation process, including tackling the challenge of learning
the original text (and the emotional weight it carries) without speaking the
mother language.
One of my favorite Zorn albums. I found my CD copy used (complete with the original stickers) in a specialist heavy metal record store in Sydney (no doubt by association with some of his other albums); it seemed to be the only CD in the rack that had nothing to do with metal. I think it was put there for me.
