Well, my turn to catch up with them. My first exposure was through the Otis Spann album. It's been over 30 years since I've played some of these and this might be the last time they get a spin. Fleetwood Mac
Well now you've got me on a Coltrane kick. This one is every note he recorded for Blue Note that isn't on his one leader date for the label (Blue Trane). He may not be the notional star here but there's fine playing from the likes of Paul Chambers, Donald Byrd, Winton Kelly, Lee Morgan, Horace Silver and sundry other Blue Note greats.
@djh D&C are really good, very respectful of the Dead catalog. Musicianship is excellent. I like the more recent better than the first year of shows better, sometimes Wier forgets lyrics (understandable). Better that Dark Star Orchestra, and they are very enjoyable.
Congress-Woman Malinda Jackson Parker - The Liberian Landmark Joy
Imagine Wesley Willis meets Nina Simone. An extension of her EP from the early 70s called "Tubman Goodtype Songs Of Liberia." Even some of those tunes were derived from a late 60s record which featured one of her favorite subjects: bloodsucking insects. This album is named after the label that 60s side was on. A "special" tune of hers - part of a series - is called "Cousin Mosquito No. 2" where she begins talking about how great "Radaminov" was - soon playing Rachmaninov's "Prelude in C Sharp Minor" while singing about how awful the mosquito is: "Mosquito is no friend to man" ... "Mosquito has the stink of death" ... The album is filled with all kinds of grandmotherly advice for the inhabitants of Liberia. Maybe it's time for us to listen too?
