A few years back I took all my remaining reggae vinyl down to my local craft beer place in SE London. Sunday between about 12 and 3 we'd have Dave's Dub Sunday. I'd leave handling the deck to the shop owner and sit back with a succession of 6-9 % beers. Happy Days. Well anyway this unofficial comp came my way and it felt rude to say no.
Ring The Alarm is probably his best known vocal (on the great Stalag rhythm) an ealy digital dub classic. He was shot dead in his car in Houston at the grand old age of 21.
Love Tenor Saw and was shocked by his death (actually, he was hit by a car and left dead on the side of the road). When Ring the Alarm was released it was a big hit in '85. I used to DJ at a club called "Cool Riddims" and the "new sound of Dancehall" really was a fun thing then - much better than the House music of the time methinks - but that's just me. That In Dub is nice too. I think the Eni Meeni Mini Mo Dub is called that because very little happens. Ha! Don't know if you remember the "bubble" craze in reggae. You can hear some of that here:
My fudged reading of someone else's writing I expect. I understand some folks think T Saw was murdered which is probably where I got my shot explanation from - there being far too many shootings in Reggae circles around that time. There's a showcase / clash with Coco Tea which is the origin of that album cover - I must hear that as I don't really have a handle on Coco Tea.
Seconds later - the full TS / CT Clash album is on YouTube suprise suprise.

In my mind this fits in a genre with Nik Bärtsch (and imitators), Mind over Midi, maybe even Frank Bretschneider and Jaki Liebezeit, especially the stuff with Burnt Friedman...and I am not sure what that genre is called, but I like it. The cover art is an excellent representation of the musical methodology - moving things slightly off-center within repeating grids.
Edit: WOW! I had forgotten how awesome this album is!
@jonahpwll thanks for the intro. Really enjoying this outstanding album!
Impulse Records is (justifiably) known for some of its legendary recordings by revered names such as Coltrane, Pharoah, and Shepp... but there are some under-the-radar recordings in that imprint's catalog that deserve the hall of fame treatment no less than their more well-known counterparts.
Currently playing one of my favorite albums by one of my favorite modern bands:
