Dirty Little Secret

  • Yo, the song that started this thread just came up on my ipod which I have turned up, to drown out my hubby's groans. He just came home from surgery & the hospital, and I'm tired of his noises. Thank god the kid is gone on some school thing, and I can have a drink. Yes, that sounds heartless, but it's been stressful wondering if he's going to die or be incapacitated.

"Life just goes round and round"
  • My other dirty secret is that I hung with the .....not stupid, not dullard, not delinquent kids....but possibly the kids most likely to get lost, for reasons of parent disinterest.
  • This song has always given me comfort, from when I was 16 yrs old to now...
Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here"

So, so you think you can tell
    Heaven from Hell,
    Blue skys from pain.
Can you tell a green field
    From a cold steel rail?
    A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade
    Your heros for ghosts?
    Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
    Cold comfort for change?
    And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
    We're just two lost souls
    Swimming in a fish bowl,
    Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
    What have we found?
    The same old fears.
    Wish you were here.
  • You brothers, who are mine,
    Poor people, near and far,
    Longing for every star,
    Dream of relief from pain,
    You, stumbling dumb
At night, as pale stars break,
Lift your thin hands for some
    Hope, and suffer, and wake,
    Poor muddling commonplace,
    You sailors who must live
    Unstarred by hopelessness,
    We share a single face.
    Give me my welcome back.

  • @Katrina - Sorry to hear you've been going through a rough time. Hope all is better (or at least getting there. Here's some lyrics for you:

    Love, love is a verb
    Love is a doing word
    Fearless on my breath
    Gentle impulsion
    Shakes me makes me lighter
    Fearless on my breath

    Teardrop on the fire
    Fearless on my breath

    Nine night of matter
    Black flowers blossom
    Fearless on my breath
    Black flowers blossom
    Fearless on my breath

    Teardrop on the fire
    Fearless on my breath

    Water is my eye
    Most faithful mirror
    Fearless on my breath
Teardrop on the fire of a confession
    Fearless on my breath
    Most faithful mirror
    Fearless on my breath

    Teardrop on the fire
    Fearless on my breath

    Love is a stranger
    In an open car
    To tempt you in
    And drive you far away

    And I want you
    And I want you
    And I want you so
    It's an obsession

    Love is a danger
    Of a different kind
    To take you away
    And leave you far behind
    And love love love
    Is a dangerous drug
    You have to receive it
    And you still can't
    Get enough of the stuff

    It's savage and it's cruel
    And it shines like destruction
    Comes in like the flood
    And it seems like religion
    It's noble and it's brutal
    It distorts and deranges
    And it wrenches you up
And you're left like a zombie

    And I want you
    And I want you
    And I want you so
    It's an obsession

    It's guilt edged
    Glamorous and sleek by design
You know it's jealous by nature
    False and unkind
    It's hard and restrained
    And it's totally cool
    It touches and it teases
As you stumble in the debris

    And I want you
    And I want you
    And I want you so
    It's an obsession

  • time to move in another direction!

    songs with directionally challenged lyrics!!!

"...the hottest thing from the north to come out of the south" -the cramps from garbageman

"the north side of my town faced east. and the east was facing south..." - the who from substitute

    gobs more, i'm sure.
  • Max - I'm telling you, these lyrics are intense.

Trent (reading) - The universe is a cold, cold place, black and bleak like outer space. The wind chill drops below subzero, it's not no time to be a hero. (to Max) That doesn't make sense. How can the temperature drop below subzero?

Max - What do you mean? Subzero means below zero.

Trent - That's what I'm saying. If subzero is already below zero, then how can it be below subzero.

Max - Well, that's even colder.

Tremt - Even if it's colder, that's still subzero.

Max - Yeah, but Trent, it's the wind chill.
  • When whippoorwills call
    And evening is nigh
I hurry to my Blue Heaven

    I turn to the right
    A little white light
Will lead you to my Blue Heaven
  • Too many teardrops for one heart to be cryin'
Too many teardrops for one heart to carry on
    You're way on top now
    Since you left me
    You're always laughin'
    Way down at me
    But watch out now
    I'm gonna get there
    We'll be together
    For just a little while
And then I'm gonna put you
    Way down here
    And you'll start cryin'
    Ninety-six tears
    Cry
    Cry

And when the sun comes up
    I'll be on top
    You'll be way down there
    Lookin' up
    And I might wave
    Come up here
    But I don't see you
    Wavin' now
    I'm way down here
    Wonderin' how
    I'm gonna get you
    But I know now
I'll just cry, cry, I'll just cry

    Eclectic prawn, galactic prawn,
    eclectic prawn, galactic prawn.
This is the story of eclectic prawn,
he wears a little pretty crown
    dancing through the bubbles
he is now standing on the bottom of the sea.
He knows his look thanks to the eyeballs
of the fishes swimming nearby his throne,
he may be fooled by those reflections
as it happens even up in the shore.
    Eclectic prawn, galactic prawn.

    He’s regarded like a king
of the sea he never talked to me,
i still think he is a gentleman i
don’t wanna bother him until i might

And now it’s time to visit his castle,
    i hope i’ll know who i am,
i’m sure i’ll find good vibes,
    hot salty sparkling water

It's awfully considerate of you to think of me here
And I'm most obliged to you for making it clear
    That I'm not here

And I never knew the moon could be so big
And I never knew the moon could be so blue
And I'm grateful that you threw away my old shoes
And brought me here instead dressed in red

And I'm wondering who could be writing this song

I don't care if the sun don't shine
And I don't care if nothing is mine
And I don't care if I'm nervous with you
I'll do my loving in the Winter

    And the sea isn't green
    And I love the Queen
And what exactly is a dream?
And what exactly is a joke?

    - Syd Barrett.
  • And I was the man who sold the Arabs the moon
The Emirate Princes, their hands manicured
Their servants with luggage, they followed behind
The African concubines, regal and tall

And I was the man who sold the Arabs the moon
They festooned their flags with crescent moons

And I was the man who sold the English the sea
They wanted the afternoon breezes it bore
The sweet smell of spices from over the sea
The afternoon showers it brought during tea

And I was the man who sold the English the sea
I cowered before great battleship guns

And I was the man who sold the Yankees the sky
The black of the night and the blue of the day
The endless horizon of hope and desire

And I was the man who sold the Yankees the sky,
    The English the Sea
    The Arabs the moon

I really like like 96 Tears, BTW. Also Janie's Cryin'....both came on the radio recently and I was singing along, full lung effort, looked over and person in other car at stoplight was gaping. I don't know what this world's coming to. 30 years ago people were smiling when they saw me singing at a stop light. Yeah, I know a 20-yr-old singing is prettier than a 50-yr-old, but sheesh. I guess they were gaping at my vast knowledge of lyrics ; O

    Slow Motion
What's all that commotion going on?
The boy in the back on his second attack
Wants his baby back (wants his baby back)
What's all that commotion that you hear?
The girl in the back who was doing the quake
    Got a belly-ache, she can't concentrate
Pick up the beat, you can move like you're made out of vapour
"Catch me if you can" is what she said with her hands
Come on and take me back (can you take her back?)
When she gives you the beat and you get the shine
The world slows down and she stops on a dime
Got a number when you close your eyes
    Like a real magician
Still she knows she'll never lose a thing
She can put you up on a shelf until she wants to pull the string
Still you know she'll never slip away
Keep time in your head, counting in your head

Slow motion, I can play with time
I can keep today but tomorrow's fine
Stop and look at the pictures rolling in your head
Slow motion, you can play with time
You can leave her today but tomorrow's fine
Stop and live in your dreams at night
    Rolling in your bed

Slow motion, you can stop on a dime
Slow motion, you ought to try it sometime
Take me back on another track
Take me back, take me back
Slow motion, you can pick up the beat
Slow motion, you can stop on the street
Take me back on another track
Take me back, take me back
Slow motion, you can stop on a dime
Slow motion, you ought to try it sometime
Take me back on another track
Take me back, take me back
Slow motion, you can pick up the beat
Slow motion, you can stop on the street
Take me back on another track
Take me back, take me back

    I am an old woman
    Named after my mother,
    My old man is another
    Child that's grown old
    If dreams were lightning
    And thunder were desire
This old house would have burnt down
    A long time ago

Make me an angel that flies from Montgomery,
Make me a poster of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing that I can hold on to,
To believe in this livin' is just a hard way to go

When I was a young girl
    I had me a cowboy
He weren't much to look at,
    Just a free ramblin' man.
But that was a long time
And no matter how I try,
    The years just flow by
    Like a broken down dam.

Make me an angel that flies from Montgomery,
Make me a poster of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing that I can hold on to,
To believe in this livin' is just a hard way to go

    There's flies in the kitchen
I can hear 'em in there buzzin'
    And I ain't done nothin'
    Since I woke up today.
How the hell can a person
Go to work in the mornin'
    Come home in the evenin'
    And have nothin' to say?

Make me an angel that flies from Montgomery,
Make me a poster of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing that I can hold on to,
To believe in this livin' is just a hard way to go

Angel from Montgomery - John Prine

"If dreams were lightning And thunder were desire This old house would have burnt down A long time ago" - One of the all time greatest lyrics.
  • Yes it is. I've listened to Bonnie Raitt's version more than Prine's.
  • She broke down and let me in
Made me see where I've been

    Been down one time
    Been down two times
    I'm never going back again

You don't know what it means to win
Come down and see me again

    Been down one time
    Been down two times
    I'm never going back again

Ever since I was a child,
    I loved to wander wild
    Through the bright city lights,
And find myself a life I could call my own.
    It was always my ambition
    To see Piccadilly,
    Ramble and roam around Soho
    And Pimlico and Savile Row,
And walk down the Abbey Road.
So I saved all my money
    And packed up my clothes,
And I said good-bye to my friends
    And my folks back home.
And I left for a life of my own.
I left for a life on the road.

    I'm a real hungry tyke,
And I know what I like.
And I know where I'm goin':
    To those bright city lights.
    Oh yeah, oh yeah,
This time I'm gonna get there.
I'm bound for a life on the road.
Give me life on the road.
I said life on the road.

    When I arrived in Euston,
I was little more than a child.
    And I didn't know then
That the dives and the dens
Would be so vulgar and wicked and wild.
    Mama always told me
The city ladies were bawdy and bold.
And so I searched night and day
    To catch a kissable lady,
But all that I caught was a cold,
    'Cause those stuck-up city ladies
    Didn't notice me walk by.
Now I've got holes in my shoes
'Cause I've been walkin' the streets all night.
And I'm livin' the life that I chose.
Livin' my life on the road.
I said life on the road.
I want life on the road.
    Life on the road.

I was standing with the punks in Praed Street,
When a muscle man came my way.
He said, "Hey, are you gay?
Can you come out and play?"
And like a fool, I went and said, "O.K."
Ever since I was knee high,
I thought the city was paved with gold.
But I've seen so many losers
    And down and out boozers
Who were tired of bein' bought and sold.
    City women are a tease,
But I'd really love to please.
Now I've got blood shot eyes
'Cause I've been walkin' the streets all night.
And it sure knocks you out on the road.
And I'm livin' my life on the road.
I said life on the road.
    Life on the road.
I want life on the road.

    One of these days,
    I wanna go home,
    Visit my friends,
And see all the places that I used to know,
    And say good-bye to a world that's too real;
Good-bye to a world that's forgotten how to feel.
    And it's slowly usin' me,
    And there's no security.
    Sometimes I hate the road,
But it's the only life I know.
But I'm livin' the life that I chose,
So I'll live out my life on the road.

Give me life on the road.
I said life on the road.

    My My Hey Hey

    "My my, hey hey
Rock and roll is here to stay
    It's better to burn out
    Than to fade away
    My my, hey hey.

    Out of the blue
    and into the black
    They give you this,
    but you pay for that
    And once you're gone,
    you can never come back
When you're out of the blue
    and into the black.

    The king is gone
    but he's not forgotten
    This is the story
    of a Johnny Rotten
    It's better to burn out
    than it is to rust
    The king is gone
    but he's not forgotten.

    Hey hey, my my
Rock and roll can never die
    There's more to the picture
    Than meets the eye.
    Hey hey, my my."

    - Neil Young.
  • Stare into the moonlight
    Silver fingers press my eyes
Probing in my heart with longing

These footprints by the sea's edge
    Disappearing grain by grain
Lose their form but keep their substance

As the waves roar on the beach like a squadron of F16's
Ebb and flow like the better days they say this world has seen

    Government by outrage
    Hunger camps and shanty towns
    Dignity and love still holding

This bluegreen ball in black space
    Filled with beauty even now
    battered and abused and lovely

And the waves roar on the beach like a squadron of F16's
Ebb and flow like the better days they say this world has seen

Each one in our own heart
Desperate to know where we stand
Planet of the clowns in wet shoes

    - Bruce Cockburn
  • On the back of a winged horse,
through the sky of pearly grey.
Love is leaf-like... you and me, baby.
    Twinkle, twinkle
    Blah, blah, blah,...

  • Music was my first love
And it will be my last
    Music of the future
    And music of the past

    To live without my music
    Would be impossible to do
    In this world of troubles
    My music pulls me through

I am just a new boy,
    Stranger in this town.
Where are all the good times?
Who’s gonna show this stranger around?

Ooooo I need a dirty woman.
Ooooo I need a dirty girl.

Will some woman in this desert land,
Make me feel like a real man?
Take this rock and roll refugee.
    Ooo babe, set me free.

Ooooo I need a dirty woman.
Ooooo I need a dirty girl.
Ooooo I need a dirty woman.
Ooooo I need a dirty girl.

    I sing
    The bebop apocalypse
    Lean into you
    God's hands on my hips
    Grip the midnight microphone
Steel every cell of my flesh and bone
    I wrestle my angel
    In smoky stage lights
    Climb Jacob's ladder
    Two thousand more flights
Tell St. Valentine, Hey gimme five—
Baby our love song must survive

We were born in the dirt
    On our hands and knees
    But started out climbing
    Deciduous trees
    We learned to sway
    Ridiculously high
    Hungry to taste
    Mouthfuls of sky
Now I bring all our secrets
    To show and tell
    How we dragged each other
    Through heaven and hell
    It's our smoking gun
    But hey, we're still alive
Baby our love song must survive

    Your third-story windows
    On thirteenth and Main
    Still glow with an eerie
    Mysterious flame
Where we learned to slow dance
    By dawn's early light
    And tried to be tender
    With all of our might
    And just down the street
    At the Milner Hotel
    Rosie's sloppin' the hogs
    And the infidels
They all went out of business
When the market took a dive
Baby our love song must survive

    There's nights when I mostly
    Just feel like a thief
    With a prized possession
    A gleeful belief
    That love's both a joke
    And a serious matter
You don't quite know your muse
But you know when you've had her
When I first saw your face yeah
    It hurt you to smile
    Your lips tasted like tears
I could kiss them for miles
    On a midnight train—
    May it never arrive
Baby our love song must survive

    There's days when we lose
    Our appetite
    And days when we're bruised
    And losing the fight
    Of a lifetime, days
    When we're looking inside
    Wondering if
    We're half dead or alive
    But the slow honey drip
Of those young nights long gone—
    The memory's a friendly whip
    Urging us on
    My mouth on your lips
    Is just trying to revive
Baby our love song must survive

    This love's the affirmation
    Of everything good
    The oxygen coursing
    Through the blood
    The feel of being understood
    The belief that, Oh Yes,
    Somehow we could
    And the milkyway looks
    Like a flimsy blouse
    But now we're gentrified
    In our civil war house
    Safe as a painting
    By Currier and Ives
Baby our love song must survive

    So I still sing
    The bebop apocalypse
    Lean into you
    God's hands on my hips
    Grip the midnight microphone
Steel every cell of my flesh and bone
    I still wrestle my angel
    In smoky stage lights
    Climb Jacob's ladder
    Two thousand more flights
C'mon St. Valentine, how 'bout a high five—
Baby our love song must survive

    - Over the Rhine, Infamous Love Song.
  • Well the old world may be dead
    Our parents can't understand
But I still love my parents
And I still love the old world
Oh, I had a New York girlfriend
And she couldn't understand how I could
Still love my parents and still love the old world
    So I told her:
I want to keep my place in the old world
Keep my place in the arcane
'Cause I still love my parents and I still love the old world
    Alright
    I say old world
    I say old world
    I say

    Well I see a '50's apartment house
    Bleak in the morning sun
But I still love the '50's
And I still love the old world
I wanna keep my place in the old world
Keep my place in the arcane
'Cause I still love my parents and I still love the old world
    Alright

I see the '50's apartment house
It's bleak in the 1970's sun
But I still love the '50's
And I still love the old world
I wanna keep my place in this old world
Keep my place in the arcane knowledge
And I still love the '50's and I still love the old world

Alright now we say bye bye old world
    Gotta help the new world
    Oh bye bye
I say bye bye bye bye old world

I like Over the Rhine, but don't have that one.
I'll have to look them both up on Spotify.
