In remission of a mind, watch and listen to find
The position behind this illusion of time
Got me counting my dimes so on the bus I can ride
I'm even doubting the rhyme, I'm in no rush, I can hide

Because I know that I tried, no longer taking a side
Tears don't flow from my eyes, no longer go for the lies
I don't protest or resist, I'm not invested in this
I'm backing out of the fight to give my spirit tonight

Gazing at the phase of an overcast day
Watching rain fall from a damp cafe
Can't see the wind but I see the trees sway
Now the evening's kiss got me fading away
    Just fading away
    Just fading away
    Fading away

    Drip-drop, window pane hypnotic
    Clip-clop, concrete heels on it
I'm still disillusioned and cool catatonic
Always in a daze without smoking that chronic

And the door's still open at the end of the day
And I'm still hoping without much to say
And ask me how I'm feeling; well I'm full of shit n doubt
Ask me who I'm with and I'll tell you I'm without

These phantasm women got me swimming through the sea
Apprehension steady creeping, whirlpool is pulling me
So I might as well relax, go down with the flood
Cause my hearts been attacked and the sharks smell my blood
If I lose consciousness and I wake on a unassured
I will never complain I will never get old

Gazing at the phase of an overcast day
Watching rain fall from a damp cafe
Can't see the wind but I see the trees sway
Now the evening's kiss got me fading away

Well the old world may be dead
The old world may be dead
I..say goodbye to the old world

The old world's history is long and elegant
But its time to say goodbye to the old world

    See the 1920's apartment house
It doesn't fit no more in the new kind of..places
In with all the modern buildings around
It feels like a remenant..of an older world

And I don't wanna go back to the old world

I don't wanna go back to the old world
    I..say goodbye to the old__

    The old world's fading fast
    Old world's fading fast
I say goodbye to a faded world
To the camaraderie and the elegance
And the feel and discipline of the old world

    Old world may be dead
I say bye bye bye bye to the old world

:Jonathan Richman - Old World (2009)
    .
  • Silent as the final hour heralding a quake, we cut the wire . . .
We slipped the guard, sprayed "LOVE" across the barricades.
As searchlights swooped and froze and failed to isolate
a trace of life outside the gates of New Tomorrow.
The penalty for deviation's clear to those with ears
and eyes. We stretch our claws behind closed doors.
We always have our alibis. Outside we smile with
lips zipped, eyes fixed forward. We never criticise the
pure and guiding Light of new Tomorrow.
But though they burned the history books, they
cannot kill the ghost that cruises Blindman's
boulevard and plants a rose . . . who flings his seeds
of Breakdown Bridge and sees a legend grow of life
beyond the throes of New Tomorrow.
And we have watched the sun roll down the
mountain to a frozen lake. We have heard our laughs
go on forever deep inside a crystal cave. We
told them as they plunged the needle, pledging
our escape from the all-embracing arms of New
    Tomorrow.
WE SHALL SEE OUR KINGDOM COME!

    [apparently transitioning into the song]
Well the old world's fading fast
    The old world's fading fast
The old world may be dead
But I..have respect for the ancient world the arcane
But it's time to - just to say goodbye

Well the old world may be dead
    But our parents can't understand..why__
Say goodbye to the old world

See the brick apartment house from World War One
It's still out there in the morning sun
But its different now, it doesn't rule
Like it ruled in the old world

Look, I don't want to go back to the old ways
I don't wanna go back to the arcane
I..say goodbye to the old world

    [guitar solo]

Well the old world's fadin' fast
But it's not quite faded yet
    We still see big signs
The griffins, and gargoyles of the old world

The discipline, the camaraderie, the elegance
And all the patriality[1], and the feel...

Jonathan Richman - Old World (2011)
[1] Someone is coughing here, 'all the patriality' is my best guess from listening and trying to follow his lips (but I'm no lip-reader).
Patrialiy is the right to reside in the UK. Here I take to mean feeling like one belongs to society. Also it pertains to the artifacts: The buildings, griffins, and gargoyles had a right to be where they are.
I love the way he keeps reinventing this song.
  • Lloyd Cole - Perfect Skin

i choose my friends only far too well
i'm up on the pavement, they're all down in the cellar
with their government grants and my i.q.
they brought me down to size, academia blues
louise is a girl, i know her well
she's up on the pavement, yes she's a weather girl
and i'm staying up here so i may be undone
she's inappropriate, but then she's much more fun and
    when she smiles my way
my eyes go out in vain
    she's got perfect skin
shame on you, you've got no sense of grace, shame on me
ah just in case i might come to a conclusion
other than that which is absolutely necessary
    and that's perfect skin
louise is the girl with the perfect skin
she says turn on the light, otherwise it can't be seen
she's got cheekbones like geometry and eyes like sin
and she's sexually enlightened by cosmopolitan and
    when she smiles my way
my eyes go out in vain
    for her perfect skin
    yeah that's perfect skin
she takes me down to the basement to look at her slides
of her family life, pretty weird at times
at the age of ten she looked like greta garbo
and i loved her then, but how was she to know that
    when she smiles my way
my eyes go out in vain
    she's got perfect skin
up eight flights of stairs to her basement flat
pretty confused huh, being shipped around like that
seems we climbed so high now we're down so low
strikes me the moral of this song must be there never has been one
  • That's one of his best songs.

Brings back memories of secondary school/college. I liked forest fire as well.
  • After the rain in the streets light flows like blood
I can just taste salt on the humid wind

    Here comes that gasoline
Spreading hungry rainbow over shiny black tar

I'm blown like smoke and blind as wind
Except for when your love breaks in

Maybe to those who love is given sight
To pierce the wall of seeming night
And know it pure beyond all imagining

Engine throb street cruise light bullet car flash
Hollow beauty night gleam oily river tension glass

Ultraflame! Glittering dust falling in slow motion
Clouds tumbling one over another into apparent emptiness

It's like a big fist breaking down my door
I never felt such a love before

Maybe to those who love it's given to hear
Music too high for the human ear
And clear as hydrogen to go singing

Bruce Cockburn - After the Rain
  • Up every evening 'bout half eight or nine
    I give my complete attention
to a very good friend of mine
    He's quadraphonic, he's a,
    he's got more channels
    So hologramic,
    oh my T V C one five
I brought my baby home, she
    She sat around forlorn
She saw my T V C one five, baby's gone, she
She crawled right in, oh my
    She crawled right in my
    So hologramic,
    oh my T V C one five
    Oh, so demonic,
    oh my T V C one five

Maybe if I pray every, each night I sit there pleading

    "Send back
    my dream test baby,
    She's my main feature"
My T V C one five, he, he just
    Stares back unblinking
    So hologramic,
    oh my T V C one five
One of these nights I may just
Jump down that rainbow way, be with my baby, then

    We'll spend some time together
So hologramic, oh my T V C one five
    My baby's in there someplace
    Love's rating in the sky
    So hologramic,
    oh my T V C one five

    Oh my T V C one five,
    oh oh, T V C one five
    Oh my T V C one five,
    oh oh, T V C one five
    Oh my T V C one five,

    David Bowie - TVC15
  • Mmm,I will have to check that out. I am on a lyrics posting mission, though - and here it goes, Art Brut, "Nag Nag Nag Nag"

Wet trousers in the washing machine,
but I’d rather be damp than seen in jeans.

I’m grown up now but refuse to learn
that those were just adolescent concerns.
    I’m possibly missing something
    someone should have told me.
My record collection reduced to a mixed tape,
headphones on I made my escape.
I’m in a film of personal soundtrack.
I’m leaving home and I’m never gonna come back.

I’m learning lyrics from the CD
inlaid to impress people with the stupid things I say.

I’m grown up now but refuse to learn
that those were just adolescent concerns.
    I’m possibly missing something
    someone should have told me.
A record collection reduced to a mixed tape,
headphones on I made my escape.
I’m in a film of personal soundtrack.
I’m leaving home and I’m never gonna come back.

I used to have a bedroom to hide in,
but now I’m outside the siding.
    Older but wiser,
    this song’s the decider.
Is it the sound of a man wrestling with emotion,
or the sound of him losing
    and causing commotion?
    I’m nothing to my peers,
    but envy and hatred.
How many girls have they seen naked?

I’m grown up now but refuse to learn
that those were just adolescent concerns.
    I’m possibly missing something
    someone should have told me.
A record collection reduced to a mixed tape,
headphones on I made my escape.
I’m in a film of personal soundtrack.
I’m leaving home and I’m never gonna come back.

Nice, Mutex. Thx for reminding me about that Bowie song.
germanprof, I don't have that by Bruce Cockburn, only Dart to the Heart
  • Johnny’s in the basement
    Mixing up the medicine
    I’m on the pavement
    Thinking about the government
The man in the trench coat
    Badge out, laid off
Says he’s got a bad cough
Wants to get it paid off
    Look out kid
    It’s somethin’ you did
    God knows when
    But you’re doin’ it again
You better duck down the alley way
    Lookin’ for a new friend
The man in the coon-skin cap
    By the big pen
    Wants eleven dollar bills
    You only got ten

    Maggie comes fleet foot
    Face full of black soot
    Talkin’ that the heat put
    Plants in the bed but
    The phone’s tapped anyway
    Maggie says that many say
They must bust in early May
    Orders from the D.A.
    Look out kid
    Don’t matter what you did
    Walk on your tiptoes
    Don’t try “No-Doz”
    Better stay away from those
That carry around a fire hose
    Keep a clean nose
    Watch the plain clothes
    You don’t need a weatherman
To know which way the wind blows

    Get sick, get well
    Hang around a ink well
    Ring bell, hard to tell
If anything is goin’ to sell
    Try hard, get barred
    Get back, write braille
    Get jailed, jump bail
Join the army, if you fail
    Look out kid
    You’re gonna get hit
    But users, cheaters
    Six-time losers
    Hang around the theaters
    Girl by the whirlpool
    Lookin’ for a new fool
    Don’t follow leaders
    Watch the parkin’ meters

    Ah get born, keep warm
Short pants, romance, learn to dance
    Get dressed, get blessed
    Try to be a success
Please her, please him, buy gifts
    Don’t steal, don’t lift
    Twenty years of schoolin’
And they put you on the day shift
    Look out kid
    They keep it all hid
    Better jump down a manhole
    Light yourself a candle
    Don’t wear sandals
    Try to avoid the scandals
    Don’t wanna be a bum
    You better chew gum
    The pump don’t work
’Cause the vandals took the handles

Bob Dylan - Subterranean Homesick Blues
  • Well Dr M, I amazed myself, I worked the song out from the first line, which, for me, is unusual! Thanks

    @Katrina,
I have every Cockburn album, I think - thirty or so of them. Dart to the Heart's a good one too. The first two lines of this one are perfect (rhythmically, alliteratively, descriptively) and often pop into my head on bad work days. (And it seems fitting as I'm headed to Texas)

When the wild-eyed dogs of day to day
    Come snapping at your heels
And there's so much coming at you
That you don't know how to feel
When they've taken all your money
And then come back for your clothes
When your hands are full of thorns
But you can't quit groping for the rose

In the southland of the heart
Where night blooms perfume the breeze
    Lie down
    Take your rest with me

When thoughts you've tried to leave behind
    Keep sniping from the dark
When the fire burns inside you but
    You jump from every spark
When your heart's beset by memories
    You wish you'd never made
When the sun comes up an enemy
    And nothing gives you shade

In the southland of the heart
    Where the saints go lazily
    Lie down
    Take your rest with me

When the preacher lays his insight down
And claims to lead the blind
When those you trust just get you hooked
    And trifle with your mind
    When the nightmare's creeping closer
And your wheels are in the mud
    When everything's ambiguous
    Except the taste of blood

In the southland of the heart
    There's no question of degree
    Lie down
    Take your rest with me

In the southland of the heart
    Everyone was always free
    Lie down
    Take your rest with me

  • I can saw a woman in two
But you won't want to look in the box when I do
    I can make love disappear
For my next trick I'll need a volunteer

I can pull a rabbit out of a hat
I can pull it out but I can't put it back
    I can make love disappear
For my next trick I'll need a volunteer

    It's lonely up here
When the tricks have been played
    And the spotlights have faded
And the plans that we made
    Have fallen apart
    It's lonely as hell
    And there's no magic spell
    For a broken heart

You can put me in chains and I will escape
Better not wait up 'cause I might be late
    I can make love disappear
For my next trick I'll need a volunteer
    It's lonely up here
When the tricks have been played
    And the spotlights have faded
And the plans that we made
    Have fallen apart
    It's lonely as hell
    And there's no magic spell

  • Dandy Warhols. OMG, I cannot recommend this song enough.

    You got a great car
Yeah, what's wrong with it today?
I used to have one too,
Maybe I'll come and have a look.
    I really love
    your hairdo, yeah
I'm glad you like mine too,
See what looking pretty cool will get ya?

    So, what do you do?
Oh yeah, I wait tables too.
No, I haven't heard your band,
'Cause you guys are pretty new.
But if you dig on vegan food
Well come over to my work
    I'll have them cook you
    Something that you'll really love.

    'cause I like you
    yeah I like you
and I'm feeling so bohemian like you
Yeah I like you yeah I like you.
And I feel whoa ho woo
    Ooh ooh ooh
    Ooh ooh ooh
    Ooh ooh ooh
    Ooh ooh ooh

    Wait
    Whose that guy
    Just hanging at your pad
    He's looking kinda bummed
Yeah, you broke up, thats too bad.
I guess it's fair if he always pays the rent
    And he doesn't get bent
about sleeping on the couch when I'm there.

    'Cause I like you
    yeah I like you
And I'm feeling so bohemian like you
    Yeah I like you
    Yeah I like you
And I feel whoa ho woo!
    Ooh ooh ooh
    Ooh ooh ooh
    Ooh ooh ooh

    I'm getting wise and
I'm feeling so bohemian like you
It's you that I want, so please
Just a casual, casual easy thing
    Is it?
    it is for me
And I like you yeah I like you
and I like you I like you I like you
I like you I like you I like you
I like you and I feel
    Whoa ho woo!
    Ooh ooh ooh
    Ooh ooh ooh
    Ooh ooh ooh

When all the hourglass sands on your mantle have gone, when all the painters are dead, when you take out a small loan for a pint of Oxygen, that's when I'll know you're in love.

I know the time will come someday, but for now it is all that I can do to live. None of your reincarnated souls have ever known I've been alive, but someday my karma will win.

Then the endless summer. Then the days when my death spots are gone. Then the boring washeteria. Then the hard chore of falling in love.

In love, in love, in sweet love I've fallen in love, in love in love. Love, in love, in love in sweet love, I've fallen in. Oh, yes I've fallen in love.

Take an account of the days, months, and eons the planet's been and keep all those numbers in your mind. Add the time QVC commemorative plates take to rise in value. That's how long I've waited for you.

Through the middle ages. Through the days of the factory scene. Through the Reagan Era. Through the times when I have been in love.

Y3K you finally looked around and saw me standing there lined by the ATM machine. When Jesus peeped through the purple clouds and angels' trumpets blasted, that's when you actually kissed me.

Then internal fireworks. Then the sound of a race's last breath. Then I heard us dying. But finally we'd fallen in love.

In love, in love, in sweet love we've fallen in love, in love in love. Love, in love, in love in sweet love, we've fallen in.
    Finally fallen in love.

  • You make the sun shine
    Keep me warm at night

Sometimes you are my guiding light
    When I'm weak or desperate
    You'll stretch out your hand
It's a hand that offers courage
It's a hand that calms me down
And leads me to a land that we
    Discovered countless lives ago
    Still young enough to change
    This wicked world

But tell me angel, where to now?

    Shall we chase rainbows
    Ride the stars by night
    Stay close
    Be my second sight
    Show me our tomorrows
    'Cause I can't dream alone

    you've nowhere to hide.
    she's asking you
    why you think it's funny.

    it's coming down.
    it's coming down.
    she's leaving your house.
    she had to get out.
    she's mad,
and she'll take her mattress with her.

    it's coming down.
    it's coming down.
    you lie on the floor.
    she's slamming your door.
    she's gone,
and she's wearing your red sweater.

    Cake. I love the lines
    " she's leaving your house.

I don't know why I posted those Cake lyrics above. These are the ones I really love:
    I want a girl with
    A mind like a diamond
    I want a girl who
    Knows what's best
    I want a girl with
    Shoes that cut
    And eyes that burn
    Like cigarettes
    I want a girl with
    The right allocations
    Who's fast and thorough
    And sharp as a tack
    She's playing
    With her jewellery
    She's putting up her hair
    She's touring the facilities
    And picking up slack

I want a girl with a short skirt
    And a long jacket

    I want a girl who
    Gets up early
    I want a girl who
    Stays up late
    I want a girl with
    Uninterupted prosperity
    Who used a machete
    To cut through red tape

    With fingernails that
    Shine like justice
And a voice that is dark
    Like tinted glass
    She is fast and thorough
    And sharp as a tack
    She's touring the facilities
    And picking up slack
I want a girl with a short skirt
    And a long, long jacket

    I want a girl with
    A smooth liquidation
    I want a girl with
    The right dividends
    And at the city bank
    We will meet accidentally
    We'll start to talk when
    She borrows my pen

    She wants a car with
    A cupholder arm rest
    She wants a car
    That will get her there
    She's changing her name
    From Kitty to Karen
    She's trading her MG for
    A white Chrystler Laberan

I want a girl with a short skirt
    And a long jacket

Wheeeee, baby, that was me, 20 yrs ago.
  • The first Cake lyrics made me think of this:

We sit in the car outside your house
I can feel the heat coming 'round
I go to put my arm around you
and you give me a look like I'm way out of bounds
well you let out one of your bored sighs
Well lately when I look into your eyes
    I'm goin down

We get dressed up and we go out, baby, for the night
We come home early burning, burning in some fire fight
I'm sick and tired of you setting me up
Setting me up just to knock-a knock-a knock-a me down

I pull you close but when we kiss I can feel a doubt
I remember back when we started
My kisses used to turn you inside out
I used to drive you to work in the morning
Friday night I'd drive you all around
You used to love to drive me wild
But lately girl you get your kicks from just driving me down

Bruce Springsteen - I'm Goin' Down
  • And now the lyrics I came to post which are a counterpoint of sorts to the Cake. Warning: Deep Existential contents.

    Pray God you can cope.
I stand outside this woman's work,
    This woman's world.
Ooh, it's hard on the man,
    Now his part is over.
Now starts the craft of the father.

I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.
I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.

I should be crying, but I just can't let it show.
I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking

Of all the things I should've said,
    That I never said.
All the things we should've done,
    Though we never did.
All the things I should've given,
    But I didn't.

    Oh, darling, make it go,
    Make it go away.

    Give me these moments back.
    Give them back to me.
    Give me that little kiss.
    Give me your hand.

(I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.
I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.)

I should be crying, but I just can't let it show.
I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking

Of all the things we should've said,
    That we never said.
All the things we should've done,
    Though we never did.
All the things that you needed from me.
All the things that you wanted for me.
All the things that I should've given,
    But I didn't.

Oh, darling, make it go away.
Just make it go away now.

    Don't kid yourself you matter
    Don't consume yourself with hate
    Don't underestimate your power
    to overthrow the state

I dream of times to come
    a peaceful placid age
when ego steps into the wings
    and love takes center stage

  • LOL

She said she’d always been a dancer
She worked at 15 clubs a day
And though she thought I knew the answer
Well I knew what I could not say

From The Real Tuesday Weld (for whose sake I hope I correctly interpret this as spot-on social satire rather than confession)

    Well, I believe in monogamy
    And I believe in lust
    I believe in promiscuity
    And I believe in trust
    I believe
I believe I believe in love

    And I believe in poetry
    And I believe in lies
    And I believe in technique
    And I believe in size
    I believe
I believe I believe in love
Yeah, and I believe in people who
    I believe, believe in love

    I believe in the Father,
    The Son and Holy Ghost
    And I believe in lager,
    Cigarettes and dope
    Yeah, I believe
I believe I believe in love

And you believe in your prophet
And you believe in your pope
And you believe in your guru
And I believe and hope that you believe
That I believe that you believe in love
'Cause I'll believe in anything if
I believe than you believe in love
    I believe

    Well, I believe in stoners
    And I believe in saints
    And I believe in sarcomas
    And I believe in opiates
    Yeah, I believe
I believe I believe in love

    And I believe in surgery
    And I believe in prayer
And I believe in mercy killing
    When I'm beyond repair
    Yeah, I believe
I believe I believe in love
Yeah, and I'll believe in anything if
I believe that you believe in love
    Yeah, I'm a naive hippie
I believe that you believe in love
  • There she was just a-walkin' down the street, singin' "Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do"
Snappin' her fingers and shufflin' her feet, singin' "Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do"
She looked good (looked good), she looked fine (looked fine)
She looked good, she looked fine and I nearly lost my mind

Before I knew it she was walkin' next to me, singin' "Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do"
Holdin' my hand just as natural as can be, singin' "Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do"
We walked on (walked on) to my door (my door)
We walked on to my door, then we kissed a little more

Whoa-oh, I knew we was falling in love
Yes I did, and so I told her all the things I'd been dreamin' of

Now we're together nearly every single day, singin' "Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do"
A-we're so happy and that's how we're gonna stay, singin' "Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do"
    Well I'm hers (I'm hers), she's mine (she's mine)
I'm hers, she's mine, wedding bells are gonna chime

Whoa-oh, I knew we was falling in love
Yes I did, and so I told her all the things I'd been dreamin' of

Now we're together nearly every single day, singin' "Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do"
A-we're so happy and that's how we're gonna stay, singin' "Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do"
    Well I'm hers (I'm hers), she's mine (she's mine)
I'm hers, she's mine, wedding bells are gonna chime

    Whoa-oh-oh-oh, oh yeah
Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do, we'll sing it
Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do, oh yeah, oh, oh yeah
Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do
  • That song so reminds me of listening to a UK radio programme, Saturday Club, way back when at a time when there was very little of what was called 'popular music' on UK radio - maybe 10-12 hours a week! Saturday club was 3 hours long and great for a 12-15 year old getting into music in a big way.

  • I don't think I've mentioned lately how much I adore reading the lyrics y'all post. Well.
    I ADORE THEM ALL.

Here's a song I've been tuned into lately, The Wallfowers' "Reboot the Mission":
Where you're going has no signs
And you're not going in a straight line
You ought to have me on your mind
I dare you to think otherwise

One day the water, more water
You keep diving and you won't be recovered
You need a clue, I'll come in closer
I want to tell you, you've had it coming

Eyes on the prize, reboot the mission (You've had it coming)
I lost my sight, but not the vision
Eyes on the prize, reboot the mission (You've had it coming)
I lost my sight, but not the vision

    Move your body, look alive
Oh, don't you think of what's out some time
It's even better than you've implied
Dice on the table, let it ride
The moon is showing over the buildings
    Midnight shifts, just beginning
Oh let your hair down, I'll watch you singing
I've got to say it, you had it coming

Eyes on the prize, reboot the mission (You've had it coming)
I lost my sight, but not the vision
Eyes on the prize, reboot the mission (You've had it coming)
I lost my sight, but not the vision

No matter how you use it, which way you swing
Even the longest day at some point ends
I'll throw your shoes off, hat in the ring
Show me a hook-shot, the whole thing

    Welcome Jack, the new drummer,
He jammed with the mighty Joe Strummer
I see Rami, Greg and Stewart
I've got to say it, Jay, we've had it coming

Eyes on the prize, reboot the mission (We've had this coming)
I lost my sight, but not the vision
Eyes on the prize, reboot the mission
I lost my sight, but not the vision
    (Had this coming)

What you will and what you won't
What you do and what you don't
What you can and what you can't
This is what you need to know:
Loved you though it didn't show

I know why you ran away, aha
    Understand you couldn't stay, aha
Wonder where you are today, aha
After all was said and done
It was right for you to run!
