    From The Tubes

What do you want from life
    To kidnap an heiress
or threaten her with a knife
What do you want from life
    To get cable TV
    and watch it every night

    There you sit
    a lump in your chair
    Where do you sleep
    and what do you wear
    when you're sleeping

What do you want from life
    An Indian guru
to show you the inner light
What do you want from life
    a meaningless love affair
with a girl that you met tonight

How can you tell when you're doin' alright
    Does your bank account swell
    While you're dreaming at night
How do know when you're really in love
Do violins play when you're touching the one
    That you're loving

What do you want from life
    Someone to love
and somebody that you can trust
What do you want from life
    To try and be happy
while you do the nasty things you must

Well, you can't have that, but if you're an American citizen you are entitled to:
    a heated kidney shaped pool,
a microwave oven--don't watch the food cook,
a Dyna-Gym--I'll personally demonstrate it in the privacy of your own home,
a king-size Titanic unsinkable Molly Brown waterbed with polybendum,
a foolproof plan and an airtight alibi,
    real simulated Indian jewelry,
    a Gucci shoetree,
    a year's supply of antibiotics,
a personally autographed picture of Randy Mantooth
and Bob Dylan's new unlisted phone number,
a beautifully restored 3rd Reich swizzle stick,
    Rosemary's baby,
a dream date in kneepads with Paul Williams,
a new Matador, a new mastodon,
    a Maverick, a Mustang, a Montego,
a Merc Montclair, a Mark IV, a meteor,
a Mercedes, an MG, or a Malibu,
a Mort Moriarty, a Maserati, a Mac truck,
a Mazda, a new Monza, or a moped,
    a Winnebago--Hell, a herd of Winnebago's we're giving 'em away,
or how about a McCulloch chainsaw,
    a Las Vegas wedding,
    a Mexican divorce,
a solid gold Kama Sutra coffee pot,
or a baby's arm holding an apple?
  • Well, I could sleep forever,
But it's of her I dream.
    If I could sleep forever,
    I could forget about everything

    If I could sleep forever.
    If I could sleep forever.
    If I could sleep forever,
    Oh oh-oh oh

    ~Dandy Warhols

[align=center]I'd like to thank the guy
    Who wrote the song
    That made my baby
    Fall in love with me

    Who put the bomp
In the bomp bah bomp bah bomp?
    Who put the ram
In the rama lama ding dong?
    Who put the bop
In the bop shoo bop shoo bop?
    Who put the dip
In the dip da dip da dip?
    Who was that man?
I'd like to shake his hand
    He made my baby
Fall in love with me (yeah!!)

    When my baby heard
    "Bomp bah bah bomp "
"Bah bomp bah bomp bah bomp bomp"
Every word went right into her heart
And when she heard them singin'
    "Rama lama lama lama"
    "Rama ding dong"
She said we'd never have to part
    So

    Who put the bomp
In the bomp bah bomp bah bomp?
    Who put the ram
In the rama lama ding dong?
    Who put the bop
In the bop shoo bop shoo bop?
    Who put the dip
In the dip da dip da dip?
    Who was that man?
I'd like to shake his hand
    He made my baby
Fall in love with me (yeah!!)

    Each time that we're alone
    Boogity boogity boogity
    Boogity boogity boogity shoo
Sets my baby's heart all aglow
    And everytime we dance to
    Dip da dip da dip
    Dip da dip da dip
She always says she loves me so
    So

    Who put the bomp
In the bomp bah bomp bah bomp?
    Who put the ram
In the rama lama ding dong?
    Who put the bop
In the bop shoo bop shoo bop?
    Who put the dip
In the dip da dip da dip?
    Who was that man?
I'd like to shake his hand
    He made my baby
Fall in love with me (yeah!!)

  • Are you level? How's your trim?
Do you rotate, eddy, or spin?
Are you game? What's your trick?
Do you vibrate, bounce, or tick?
What's your cut? Are you correct?
Do you detour, bend, or stretch?

We're milling through the grinder, grinding through the mill
If this is not an exercise, could it be a drill?

How's it with you? What's your form?
    Your outline, shape, or form
How's your price? What do you cost?
    Your value, profit, or loss
How's your skull? Does it fit?
Is your mind free, empty, or split?

  • Drill Drill Drill!!! Awesome. I got my first cd player as a high-school graduation present. The Drill, from a cut-out bin, was like my third ever cd purchase. I've never heard anybody talk about The Drill before unless I played it for them. I thought I still had that in storage somewhere but can't seem to find it. emu has it though; might have to get it now. (pleasantly surprised they still have Mute). Thanks for the memory.

Won't go to church with your momma
Ain't gonna go to the ma-a-all
You say you got somethin' for me
    But I don't need anything at a-a-all

I gave myself the gift of--
    Not givin' a sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sh
    Don't need mistletoe to know
I love you under any limb

    Not just where they say
Ho-ho-ho-hurry up and spend it all
    Like any other baby doll
I'll ho, ho, hold you all year long

    But any holiday
    Unless I give my gran-ny a ca-a-ar
    Unless I watch the dog
And I need to fly to Wichita

    Unless I count my blessings
    Hot chocolate with cass-er-o-ole
    Santy Claus and moo-joo
Unless I'm drivin' in the snow-o-oh

O-oh, loneliness magnifies at Christmas, the bite
    I hope you know-oh
I'll ho, ho, hold you all the time
I'll ho-ho-hold you all the time

    I'll ho-ho-hold ya
    I'll ho-ho-hold ya
    I'll ho-ho-hold ya
    I'll ho-ho-hold ya
    (repeats to 16x)

Won't go to church with your momma
Ain't gonna go to the ma-a-all
    But I'll-- ho-ho hold ya

    I'll ho-ho-hold ya
    I'll ho-ho-hold ya
    I'll ho-ho-hold ya
    I'll ho-ho-hold ya
    (repeats and fades to 15x)

  • In honour of it being 5 days until Christmas:

Snow is falling all around us
My baby's coming home for Christmas
I've been up all night inside my bedroom
He said that he'll be with me real soon

    So I wait
    And I wait
But I've had as much as I can take

'Cause I've got 5 more nights of sleeping on my own
4 more days until you're coming home
3 more dreams of you and mistletoe
2 more reasons why I love you so
I've got 5 more nights until you're next to me
4 more days of being lonely
3 more wishes I can barely breathe
If I can make it to Christmas Eve then it's

    One more sleep
(One more sleep until it's Christmas)
    One more sleep
(Can't believe how much I missed us)
    One more sleep
(One more sleep until it's Christmas)
    One more sleep

    Now I don't think I can remember
    A cold and lonelier December
And I find myself sitting at the window
Wondering when you're gonna get back home

    So I try
    And I try
But there is nothing I can do to pass this time

I've got 5 more nights of sleeping on my own
4 more days until you're coming home
3 more dreams of you and mistletoe
2 more reasons why I love you so
I've got 5 more nights until you're next to me
4 more days of being lonely
3 more wishes I can barely breathe
If I can make it to Christmas Eve then it's

    One more sleep
(One more sleep until it's Christmas)
    One more sleep
(Can't believe how much I missed us)
    One more sleep
(One more sleep until it's Christmas)
    One more sleep

Until we're rocking around the Christmas tree
Until I got you sitting next to me
We got a lot of catching up to do
I just can't take this missing you

5 more nights on my own
    4 more days
    3 more dreams
    Mistletoe
I can't believe I ever let you go

5 more nights of sleeping on my own
4 more days until you're coming home
3 more wishes I can barely breathe
If I can make it to Christmas Eve then it's one more sleep

    It'll be one more
It'll be one more (One more sleep)
It'll be one more (One more sleep)
    One more sleep

I put my hands into the roaring flames
I felt the pain as it started to burn
I've done the same thing over again and again
As if I never ever wanted to learn
Moving through the world at obsession speed
Leave a dust trail crossing the land
I'm crying out in fury to the gods of fate
Come on, get me if you can

I'm a master at the art of how to kill
I've killed the things that I love the best
There's blood on the walls of my home
    Patterned with the coward's kiss
And love it is the key that unlocks the door
But you never know what's waiting behind
Crying out in fury to the gods of fate
Come and get me if you can

I'm screaming in the wind, screaming in the rain
Screaming in the face of the storm
Howling in out in the roaring surf
With the waves crashing down into foam
To feel something without a weakness
As She batters me down into the sand
Crying out in fury to the gods of fate
Come on and get me if you can

Now I understand what they told me years ago
How the stakes get higher and higher the further that you go
It's a bad time to look for forgiveness
It's a bad time for searching for home
The Wall came down in a thousand pieces
    Now everybody's building their own
Disillusioned little children of the Western World
Time hangs heavy in our hands
We cry out in our fury to the gods of fate
Come on and get us if you can
We're crying out in our pride to the gods of fate
Come on and get us if you can
I'm crying out to the gods who couldn't care less
Come and get me if you can

  • Take the empty bottles and the broken models
With their hollow smiles and open throttles
And put 'em on a ship

Take my so-called friends, all that money means
All those money men with the flight attendants
And put 'em on a ship

And when it sails away, you'll hear people say
'You'll never get no play from the cheap seats.
    Boys, we're getting loaded.'

Take the promise keepers, yeah, those righteous creeps
The legend seekers of the ivy league
Let's put 'em on a ship

Take the vulgar boatmen and the drunken showmen
    And the Willy Lomans rock-and-roll
And put 'em on a ship

I'll give you a kiss on your big fat lips
Lets have a drink before we ship
    We're getting loaded
    We're getting loaded
    We're getting loaded
    We're getting loaded
    Yeah

In these trying times you don't know what you need
You don't know what you want, you don't know what to leave
You don't know what to take, you don't know what to believe

Take my blue-eyed son he's the beautiful one
He had angel hair and a tommy gun
Stayed out all night long looking for a rave
With his pretty mom and some ecstasy

I named him 'Point-and-Shoot', now he hates his name
Said when he's 18 he's gonna blow me away
    We're getting loaded
    We're getting loaded
    We're getting loaded
    We're getting loaded
    Yeah

And when it sails away, you'll hear people say
'You'll never get no play from the cheap seats.
    Boys, we're getting loaded'

Walk me out in the morning dew my honey,
Walk me out in the morning dew today.
I can't walk you out in the morning dew my honey,
I can't walk you out in the morning dew today.

I thought I heard a baby cry this morning,
I thought I heard a baby cry this today.
You didn't hear no baby cry this morning,
You didn't hear no baby cry today.

Where have all the people gone my honey,
Where have all the people gone today.
There's no need for you to be worrying about all those people,
You never see those people anyway.

I thought I heard a young man morn this morning,
I thought I heard a young man morn today.
I thought I heard a young man morn this morning,
I can't walk you out in the morning dew today.

Walk me out in the morning dew my honey,
Walk me out in the morning dew today.
I'll walk you out in the morning dew my honey,
I guess it doesn't really matter anyway,
I guess it doesn't matter anyway,
I guess it doesn't matter anyway,
    Guess it doesn't matter anyway.

  • I saw some people starving
There was murder, there was rape
    Their villages were burning
    They were trying to escape
    I couldn’t meet their glances
I was staring at my shoes
It was acid, it was tragic
It was almost like the blues

I have to die a little
    Between each murderous thought
    And when I’m finished thinking
I have to die a lot
    There’s torture and there’s killing
And there’s all my bad reviews
    The war, the children missing
Lord, it’s almost like the blues

So I let my heart get frozen
    To keep away the rot
    My father said I’m chosen
    My mother said I’m not
    I listened to their story
Of the Gypsies and the Jews
It was good, it wasn’t boring
It was almost like the blues

There is no G-d in Heaven
And there is no Hell below
    So says the great professor
Of all there is to know
    But I’ve had the invitation
    That a sinner can’t refuse
    And it’s almost like salvation
    It’s almost like the blues

    Leonard Cohen
    Amazing song.
  • the couch is an island
    a desert oasis
    the room is a spaceship
    and you're an undiscovered planet

i push the hair out of my eyes
i pull the blanket around me
i bite my nails, scratch my shoulder
i peel the label off the bottle
and tear it into tiny pieces

i don't know what to do with my hands
i don't know what to do with my hands

    maybe the phone will ring
and then i'll get to answer it
    a momentary distraction
i can't predict your reaction to my touch
i could sit here all night
    our knees almost touching
    but not ever quite

i don't know what to do with my hands
i don't know what to do with my hands
i don't know what to do with my hands
i don't know what to do with my hands

    i can't decide on a channel
i'm just flipping around, maybe you can choose
    maybe some kind of monster
maybe i just don't know how to reach out

i don't know what to do with my hands
i don't know what to do with my hands
i don't know what to do with my hands
i don't know what to do with my hands

i kinda want it to stay this way
    no wrong moves, no mistakes
    nothing lost, nothing broken
like a boat on a windless ocean
    (repeat 2x)

i don't know what to do
i don't know what to do
i don't know what to do
i don't know what to do

    Round round get around
    I get around
    Yeah
Get around round round I get around
    I get around
Get around round round I get around
    From town to town
Get around round round I get around
    I'm a real cool head
Get around round round I get around
    I'm makin' real good bread

I'm gettin' bugged driving up and down the same old strip
I gotta finda new place where the kids are hip

My buddies and me are getting real well known
Yeah, the bad guys know us and they leave us alone

    I get around
Get around round round I get around
    From town to town
Get around round round I get around
    I'm a real cool head
Get around round round I get around
    I'm makin' real good bread
Get around round round I get around
    I get around
    Round
    Get around round round oooo
    Wah wa ooo
    Wah wa ooo
    Wah wa ooo

We always take my car cause it's never been beat
And we've never missed yet with the girls we meet

None of the guys go steady cause it wouldn't be right
To leave their best girl home now on Saturday night . . . . etc.

  • Give praise my brethren
For what you are about to receive
    Old John Barleycorn, nicotine
And the temptation of the rock and roll chord E

No parking by the sewer sign
A hot dog with a razor broke
    Water dripping up the spout
    But I don't care
Let it all hang out, hey!

Hanging from a pine tree by my knees
The sun shines through the shade
Nobody knows what it's all about
    It's too much man,
    Let it all hang out.

I saw a man walking upside down
    My TV's on the blink
It made Galileo look like a boy scout
    Sorry about that
    Let it all hang out
    Let it all hang out

Let it all hang out ... hey!
Let it all hang out ... hey!

I sleep all day, drive all night
    My brain's so numb
    I can't stop now
    Sure ain't no doubt
    Keep an open mind
    Let it all hang out.

It's raining inside a big brown moon
Now how's that mess your baby up?
    Late last night eating a
    Reuben sandwich with sauerkraut
    Don't stop now baby
    Let it all hang out
    Let it all hang out.

Let it all hang out ... Hey!
Let it all hang out ... Hey!

No parking by the sewer sign
A hot dog with a razor broke
    Water dripping up the spout
    But I don't care
Let it all hang out, alright!

    Let it all hang out
    Let it all hang out

    Let it all hang out
    (Sleep all day)
    Let it all hang out
    (I've been drivin' all night)
    Let it all hang out
(My brain's so numb, I can't stop now)
    Let it all hang out
    Let it all hang out
    Let it all hang out

    Hey!

    The motorcade is never-ending
The marshalls wave their wheel appeal
Only some of them are breathing
Only some know what to feel

The generals grit their teeth and smile
    Just for a little while
Until they think they can't be seen
Then pour contempt through eyes that seem like magnets
    Small and hard
    Magnets

They rolled away down through the arches
    The wet streets shined confetti-lined
The sun burns everything it touches
    The motorcade dissolves the mind

The madman grits his teeth and smiles
    Just for a little while
As though he knows he can't be seen
Then pours contempt through eyes that seem like magnets

    Small and hard
    Just like magnets
    Out of the crowd
    Just like magnets
    Kennedy's children all magnets

Waste of time at the Alamo
All the kids singing Go Johnny, go Johnny, go!
All the cars parked out of view
And someone on a roof with a job to do

But the hotdogs sell and the cameras roll
It's a star situation, but it's out of control
There's a man with a message and it's written on lead
There's a man who is god, but god is dead

Still we grit out teeth and smile
    Just for a little while
As though we think we can be seen
We pour contempt through eyes that seem like magnets

    Small and hard
    Just like magnets
    Out of a crowd
    Just like magnets
    Kennedy's children all magnets

    Magnets staring up
    Just like magnets
    Burning the sky
    Just like magnets
    Kennedy's children all magnets

    Magnetized boys, boys, boys

  • I remember getting intimidated and busted at age 13 by the police.
I remember my friend Tate Bryan getting shot in the back in Tampa, FL for his first-offense burglary.
I remember the police firing at the crowds and killing children cause they were the wrong color.
I remember the narcs from my high school trying to set me up for a big fall.
I remember the police bringing dogs into our school and sniffing away my rights.

The police is the klan is the mafia
And they're all in a police state
and they're out for me, and soon they're going to be out to get you,
so you better get going if you know it's good for you and take your stand.

I remember when I first went to school
They said, Don't be a joker, don't be a fool
Pledge your allegiance to the red, white and blue
Don't expect your country to do nothin' for you
They said your forefathers loved you
    but I only had one
And I watched him die in the heat of the sun
Suckin' up the bullets of a policeman's gun
There was nothin' I could do but stay away

In the U.S.A. you gotta take your chances
If you plan on stayin' free
They call this the land of the living
But they're trying to make a dead man out of me

I remember when I first hit the road
I was runnin' from the lenders of the money I owed
Came to Austin, heard a knock at my door
Crossed another border and I'm runnin' some more
They say they're gonna get me but it ain't happened yet
Burnin' my fingers on my last cigarette
It's time to remember time to forget
Nothin' I could do but get away

In the U.S.A. you gotta take your chances
If you plan on stayin' free
They call this the land of the living
But they're trying to make a dead man out of me

I remember all the stories I heard
How a man's supposed to be 'bout as free as a bird
My brother's in prison, my father's dead
Me, I'm tired of living with a price on my head
I wonder if there's a place to be
In the whole wide country for a fella like me
Name's in the paper, face on T.V.
Nothin'I can do but get away

In the U.S.A. you gotta take your chances
If you plan on stayin' free
They call this the land of the living
But they're trying to make a dead man out of me

In the U.S.A. you gotta take your chances
If you plan on stayin' free
They call this the land of the living
But they're trying to make a dead man out of me

  • This 30+ year-old song has got its hooks into me lately.  Video and other stuff at Kirsty McColl's website. It is Billy Bragg's tune...The last two verses were added at Kirsty's request.

I was 21 years when I wrote this song
    I’m 22 now but I won’t be for long
People ask me when will I grow up to understand
Why the girls I knew at school are already pushing prams

I loved you then as I love you still
Though I put you on a pedestal you put me on the pill
I don’t feel bad about letting you go
I just feel sad about letting you know

(Chorus)I don’t want to change the world
I’m not looking for a new England
Are you looking for another girl?

I loved the words you wrote to me
    But that was bloody yesterday
I can’t survive on what you send
Every time you need a friend

I saw two shooting stars last night
I wished on them but they were only satellites
It’s wrong to wish on space hardware
    I wish, I wish, I wish you’d care

My dreams were full of strange ideas
My mind was set despite your fears
But other things got in the way
I never asked that boy to stay

Once upon a time at home
    I sat beside the telephone
Waiting for someone to pull me through
When at last it didn’t ring I knew it wasn’t you

I don’t want to change the world
I’m not looking for a new England
Are you looking for another girl?

  • Way back this used to be a favourite that I played a lot. Kirsty McColl's early death robbed us of a great talent. I saw her play decades ago, a great evening. Billy Bragg is still around, but these days I see him on television in a political context more than playing.
  • Ah, would have loved to see Kirsty McColl.

  • "Life Goes On" by the Kinks

(that entire Sleepwalker album is a gem - I somehow studied diffy Q & physics to this in university, go figure)

A friend of mine just had a real bad time.
You see, his life was shattered and he lost his mind.
His girl ran off along with his best friend,
And through emotional stress he brought his life to an end.
    It was such a tragedy,
But that's the way it's got to be.
    Life goes on.

    Life goes on.
    It happens ev'ry day.
    So appreciate what you got
    Before it's taken away.
    Life will hit you
    When you're unprepared,
So be grateful and take all
That you can while you're there.
Get that frown off your head,
'Cause you're a long time dead.
Life goes on and on and on.
Life goes on and on and on.

    Yeaaah

No use runnin' 'round lookin' scared,
Life could get you when you're unaware.
One day it's gonna come, so you better accept it.
Life will hit you when you least expect it.
And one day when you are gone,
You know that life will still go on.
But no one'll care if you've been good, bad, right or wrong.
    Life will still go on.

My bank went broke and my well ran dry.
It was almost enough to contemplate suicide.
I turned on the gas, but I soon realized
I hadn't settled my bill so they cut off my supply.
No matter how I try, it seems I'm too young to die.
Life goes on and on and on.
Life goes on and on and on.

    Tornado, cyclone and hurricane
Can batter the houses with the thunder and rain.
Blizzards can blow; the waves hit the shore,
But the people recover and come back for more.
Somehow the people fight back, even the future looks black.
Life goes on and on and on.
Life goes on and on and on.

    Lonesome, number one
Just call me lonesome, number one
Although no titles have I won
I surely must be lonesome number one

Every love I've had has faded like the dew
And everyone I've wanted has wanted someone new
Heartaches hang around and always come
Surely must be lonesome number one

    Lonesome, number one [etc]

Seems I'm always losing, love just won't come near
And just when love gets close it always disappears
Sorrow always keeps me on the run
I surely must be lonesome number one

    Lonesome, number one [etc]

Don Gibson - Lonesome Number One

Don Gibson was a childhood friend of my father in Shelby, NC. My dad said he used to sit on Don's front porch for hours and listen to him play. I think my dad also said you never saw Don without a guitar in his hands.
