Only a couple listens so far, but great. It is two very distinct albums, one solo and still very experimental-sounding, despite the fact that it was recorded 50+ years ago. The other is a more straight-ahead combo session featuring Lee Konitz...who is on so many of these brainy-type jazz sessions from the 50s. (The cognoscenti deplore the fact that a key track from the solo session is missing from this release.) I'm enjoying this and looking forward to hearing/learning more.
Zowie. I recognize some of those titles from other Konitz recordings. That record label somewhat gives me pause, though. They have an Oscar Pettiford set too.
Sic Alps - L. Mansion - I'm more likely to download singles now that I have less nps (especially when one song is offered free) - which turns out to be a good thing because I really really love this.
What am I listening to right now? Me, playing Spanish Romance arr. by Robert Hamilton. And, to be clear, I'm playing it slowly and very, very poorly. I can read the sheet music, tho, so that's something (albeit it very little).
At this new moment? Watching my daughter and her friend jump around to Miley Cirus' Best of Both Worlds. Horrible, trite, artless songs. But she's happy, so I'm happy.
Thanks for the rec of the Velvet Lapelles. I can't find the one you mention, but Spotify has Orange Peels and Rattlesnakes. I can justabout see the bluegrass thing, but not sure about 'pop'; the singer sounds like a cross between Jolie Holland and Eartha Kitt, and the band is as close to VU as dammit. (There's even a rereading of Heroin - Polka Dot Lake). Bits of Kurt Weill too. A jolly mix.
I may well be overstating the pop portion of them, I have a VERY broad definition of pop. Could be a difference in albums too. I don't have Orange Peels yet. As for Special Party Time, it just came out a few months ago so it may not have made it across the pond yet.
I'll need to give it another listen today, because I hadn't made a VU connection.
"Lingua Franca" - Epstein/Shepik/Kilmer
-A fantastic modern world jazz album. I liked it the first time I listened to it, and it's growing on me steadily. Great for a lazy Sunday afternoon when you want something peaceful that still has a kick to it.
Sun Ra - Heliocentric Worlds vol.1 - emusic for some reason is missing one track, and has been forever, but Limewire store has it, so I got it in my free 50. Just finished Sleep's Dopesmoker from there too.
personnel: Brad Shepik: electric and acoustic guitars, tambura, electric saz; Ralph Alessi: trumpet; Gary Versace: piano, organ, accordion; Drew Gress: bass; Tom Rainey: drums.
I liked Quaristice quite a bit on my first listen, seemed a bit more accessible than some recent efforts (CONFELD onwards), though I wonder how much of that is just due to the shorter tracks. I grabbed a few Warp things: that, Squarepusher, Clark, and Jackson & his Computer Band.

Thelonious Monk - Misterioso
Bizarre and cool. Possibly the best random Warp pickup today.
Fun bluegrassy pop. Perfect for a sunny Saturday afternoon.

thom - Definitely grab it when you can. Just a fun band.

The Snake by Harvey Mandel, slithers and coils itself around your extremities forcing them to move whether they want to or not.
Barbecue Bob in Fishtown by Glenn Jones

I've been doing some pruning, myself, this weekend.

Motifs by Paris Combo
A nice start to the morning...
Autechre - Quaristice - the thing I was most excited about from the Warp drop at Amie.
Wonderful cover of Radiohead's Creep on this EP.
Now it's onto this full-length treasure: I'll Be A Virgin, I'll Be A Mountain
certainly effective in motoring away the general lack of bean that can lead to a middle-of-the-week gray day apathetic stupor.
