A $5 credit really helps me to realize (1) how hard it is to find a $5 album and (2) how bad the search engine has gotten. (2) is really a shame, because I always used to like their search engine, even though a lot of people complained about it. (1) is a shame to, but I've beaten that dead horse already.
@amclark2, as mentioned in another thread I just recently exported all my SFLs from emusic into an iPod touch app (making it much easier to manage them). Whiloe doing so I sorted them by price. It's kind of interesting to see the distribution. The data is admittedly distorted by the fact that the more expensive something is, the less likely I am to have added it to my SFL in the first place (and the more likely it is to have sat there fore a while and then been removed because I decided I wasn't up for the price). The top number therefore is likely too low. With that big caveat, here's the distribution for the 100+ items I have on lists right now:
$6+ - 9
$5-$5.99 - 46
$4-$4.99 - 15
$2-$3.99 - 12
$0-$1.99 - 4
It's not the browser, it's the new system - it only needs the ID of the album, the rest of it is just for... I dunno, backwards compatibility, or to make people feel more comfortable clicking the link. That same album can be found with...
...the two sections of the URL after the album can be anything, it doesn't care. (They can't be blank, though.) Obviously the potential for hilarious hijinks deriving from this new quirk, feature, or whatever-it-is are practically limitless, but there seems to be little reason to pile on at the moment. Maybe in a couple of weeks.
I think I saw it called an improvement somewhere. The free 5 helped me to confirm how clunky it is. Half the time it wouldn't even follow it's own links. Oops.
I just came across this. It's a year old, but I can't imagine the story would be much different if it were updated to today. Excuse me if it's already been posted.
Just been looking at emusic for the first time on my iPad, and I do admit that it does work well with the colour scheme. It was possibly designed with tablets in mind or by people who mainly use iPads and similar. But most of us use computers most of the time for emusic. Also interesting was that it was the first time I had logged into emusic on the iPad since the last Apple upgrade, so I went straight to the emusic page for new members. The offer was for 14 tracks free, worth about £6, but some of the albums shown are on majors and not available here on emusic. They have just taken the US front page and adapted it - lazy in my opinion.
7 Digitak UK are testing out a version of their new website. It is very light grey, small icons, and very user friendly. It has only limited functionality, but it is being run as a beta alongside the main site. They are asking for feedback. They are doing just what emusic should have done. Not sure if it is being trialled in the States, but if you switch to the UK site you will be able to see it. If you go to www.7digital.com/b/faq you will see how they are doing it properly, unlike another company we know!
- Just in case someone should have missed it, there's a response from the mods to Greg's In praise of the moderators thread:
"Just wanted to say thanks for the comments! After last year when our VP of PR was on the boards we saw that wasn't the best idea. I decided to start my own process of handling our members on the boards. I felt these are the long term people and they need special handling. If that makes sense. So a couple of us just decided to run with the idea. Glad it's working out. It's definitely a fun change from always answering emails."
I'm not crazy how the banner images push the music down on my screen a little bit, but I gotta say that I am absolutely thrilled to go onto that site and be greeted by images of Miles Davis, Dave Douglas, and Paul Motian (well, that last one because of his death, so not thrilled in that sense, but you get what I mean). The Jazz Army is taking over! We will win this war and you will take your jazz medicine.
On the contrary for me...the picture of the quirky indie band quirkily goofing around was what drove me over the edge, prompting my quirky messboard gripe about the banners.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that W&W Paul Motian album among the jazz bestsellers, even amidst the Christmas Buble baubles
Hey, speaking of that Buble christmas album (which, apparently, is the number one most downloaded jazz album on emusic), but surely you've noticed that right next to Buble holiday album is another christmas themed album by David Ian. I swear, until I realized his first name was David and his last name Ian, for weeks I thought it was some sick joke of an album called...
I've learned to block out quirky indie bands for a long time. Denver was absolutely sloppy with them in the 90s.
On the other hand, that cool Smashing Pumpkins photo took me way back, and almost inspired me to write a Smashing Pumpkins time traveling thread. The only thing that stopped me is that I don't have any of their albums any more. At least, I don't think. Hm, maybe I should look. Because, god damn, I have some very succinct memories attached to their music throughout my life.
Can someone (BigD Bluez?) tell me if Arhoolie is still on eMusic for Americans?
Disappeared entirely for me (there was a distributor change earlier in the year but I still had access) and just when I was reading a book on Louisiana music and was about to spend fifty bucks just with them!
That bites - there are some great Louisiana records on Arhoolie - my first Clifton Chenier tape was from them. I can't keep up with the shuffling deck over there - all I know is that some of my Lists that are 4-5 years old are looking a lot slimmer than I remember them.
Actually, Arhoolie is gone ... at least one that was older and cheaper. For a while there were two Arhoolie label entries. The first was the one that had the older rips at a lower rate, but that also kept to .49/5.99. At some point a newer Arhoolie was introduced: presumably higher rips and higher prices. Perhaps only the former was still in Australia.

One of many jazz albums on my S4L for under $5. Still waiting for my credit, personally.

Why do some embedded urls from eMu have the title in them like they used to but some - like mine - don't? I'm using Firefox on a Mac.

They still call it a "redesign," though. Mmm-hmm.
