  • I don’t know where you live, but my wife and I had a chuckle. We would love to see “mid to high 80’s” here, but it’s actually been relatively mild here with upper 90s to mid 100s and high humidity this last month. We might start getting down to those 80s probably around Halloween.
  • You're the second person to point out how relatively cool it is up here in New England. My friend's in Texas and she's going through the same type of heatwave.
  • Well, it happened. Met up with friends last night and had a great time. This was the first time since COVID that I saw old friends, and we had a fantastic evening. These were friends we met in college, and it took me a few minutes to remember that we’ve known each other for over 40 years.

40 years – talk about a long time. In fact, this is my 40th year since I graduated college. That makes me… old. Most of the time I don’t think about time and how old we’ve become, but then it hits me that I’ve been on Earth for a long time. When I was young I didn’t think that I would ever get old. Remember when we thought our teachers were old when they might have been in their mid-30’s (except a couple of teachers I had who were old and fighting having to retire)?

But let’s not think about getting old right now. Let me bask in the fact that I saw a bunch of great friends last night and enjoyed the evening. We didn’t focus much on getting older, but on what we had done through the years and laughed about our adventures. Good times.

On today’s podcast, we’ll play some music from the times of our lives, with music from the ’60s through the 2010s. So listen to the Ill Wind, the Grateful Dead, Steve Miller, Concrete Blonde, the Call, Echo & the Bunnymen, the Soundtrack of Our Lives, Mott the Hoople, Johnny Winter, Paul Butterfield, Treat Her Right, Samantha Fish, Robert Cray, and Roomful of Blues.

  • Our Finnegans Wake reading group decided to go back to meeting together
in the back of a restaurant that we used to meet at monthly. I said, "Nope."
I'm not sitting in a restaurant (or any public place, actually) again until, maybe,
late October when we are planning on our first short trip in two years.
Even that idea is looking pretty shaky considering recent developments.
So, of course, the idea of meeting with a bunch of old friends would be
    completely out of the question.
    I wish you good health.
  • We're all vaxxed and stayed outside all night to further be safe.
  • I just did a quick search on what happened in 1986. Anwer’s not much. Prince Andrew married Sarah Ferguson. Strange, a man nicknamed “Randy Andy” back in the 1980s is now in trouble for consorting with Jeffrey Epstein and is accused of having sex with underage girls.

In 1986 I was living in Newton, MA, with my wife and son, working for Kay-Bee Toy & Hobby Shops at the Mall at Chestnut Hill. The hours were very long there, and I soon left (after injuring my back and neck).

The music that year was still strong, with a couple of newcomers that really hit big, like Pet Shop Boys. West End Girls was my favorite song of that year and up there on my all-time favorites.

So listen to my 1986 music capsule of songs, featuring the Pretenders, the Bangles, the Go-Betweens, the Smithereens, Paul Simon, Elvis Costello, That Petrol Emotion, Talking Heads, Pet Shop Boys, Prince, Sade, the Woodentops, XTC, and the B-52’s.

  • It’s hurricane preparation season up here in the Northeast. Fred hit us with some drenching rain but not much else (wind, etc.). Depending on where it tracks, Henri could hit us hard, but for now, it looks like we won’t get much beyond the rain. Predictions of when the rain begins keep getting pushed out, and it looks like it’ll end earlier than first forecast. We’ll see.

We’ve gotten used to getting ready for big storms. We have enough food, so we don’t go to the store in case we’re without power for days – we can survive quite nicely without having to shop with everyone who apparently doesn’t have enough food to last in case of an emergency.

We’ll chill out for as long as necessary – which will probably be not this time, according to the latest forecast. Hope everyone who might get hit stays safe, though.

Music will see us through. Today’s podcast includes Nikki Lane, Lily Hiatt, Lydia Loveless, the Secret Sisters, the North Mississippi Allstars, Cephas & Wiggins, Z.Z. Hill, the Fountains of Wayne, Josie Cotton, Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, the Pretenders, the Smithereens, Marshall Crenshaw, and the dBs.

  • Sometimes it’s not worth looking at what happened in a year. 1991 was known for Operation Desert Storm. How’d that turn out? Oh yeah, leaving Afghanistan is tied in with that in a way.

Maybe movies will be better. Let’s see; there’s Silence of the Lambs, Terminator 2, Cape Fear, Soapdish, and many, many more. Not bad.

Music was good, too. Have you heard of a band that got really big in 1991? Does Nirvana sound familiar? Many great albums came out that year, and today’s podcast explores some of the top songs from that year.

Let’s hear music from Seal, Nirvana, Matthew Sweet, Massive Attack, R.E.M., Julian Cope, Primal Scream, Richard Thompson, Marshall Crenshaw, Crowded House, the La’s, Dinvyls, and Bonnie Raitt.

  • Cool, dry air has descended on New England. It’s nice but not what we usually get in late August. We’ve had so many hot and humid days this summer that the contrast seems greater than usual. We just came off another hot week and next week looks like typical New England weather – high 80’s on Monday, high 60’s on Thursday. Love those temperature swings.

But this weekend has been perfect in my estimation. We hit 70 yesterday and may do the same today. A small breeze makes it fine. Sure, to some of you this will seem cold, but it’s my perfect weather. As a life-long New Englander, I actually like it a little cold. Let’s keep the humidity nice and low for September -ok?

Today’s podcast, however, is coming in hot. So tune into the Fountains of Wayne, Yola, David Crosby, Dave Edmunds, Dr. Feelgood, Nick Lowe, John Hiatt, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jerry Lee Lewis, George Jones, Buck Owens, Bobbie Gentry, the Blues Project, the Asylum Choir, Cat Mother & the All-Night Newsboys, and David Blue.

  • When is Labor Day? In the U.S. and Canada, it’s the first Monday in September. For most of Europe, it’s May 1. It’s not May 1 in the U.S. for reasons that you can probably guess. Yes, we celebrate it later because we don’t want to strengthen socialist (and anarchist) movements by associating it with the growing labor movement (said to have its roots with the American Federation of Labor’s successful push for 8 hour days in 1882).

Anyway, now it’s known as the end of summer weekend. For labor, it used to mean double-time and a half (we had to move the family reunion to Sunday for fear of not having two uncles who worked at the mill absent. We had to postpone to Monday a couple of times due to bad weather and Stan and Johnny wouldn’t be there).

Hope everyone has a good Labor Day weekend. Kate and I are babysitting while Nick and Lindsay go off to a wedding in the Chicago area. You know we’re having fun.

This week’s podcast has some great tunes to listen to while at a party. So listento Bananarama, T. Rex, Enuff Z’ Nnuff, Redd Kriss, Robert Cray, Taj Mahal, Otis Spann, Eddie Boyd, Allison Russell, Minnie Ripperton, Patrice Rushen, Brenda Russell, The Who, and Led Zeppelin.

  • Even better is the Queen’s birthday holiday in Australia. Next year, it’s June 13 in NSW, Victoria and South Australia; September 26 in Western Australia; and October 3 in Queensland. And when is her real birthday!? None of the above, it’s April 26!
  • I thought it was April 21st. We had a friend who shared that birthday and we wondered who would die first because our friend was so old. She died last year after turning 100.
  • Even better is the Queen’s birthday holiday in Australia.

In the UK it is 11th June!! (It is always the second Saturday in June, apparently.) But her real birthday is 21st April. We actually get an additional official holiday next year on 2nd June, to recognise her 70th anniversay of her accession as Queen, which comes in February next year, the 2nd June is actually the 69th anniversary of her Coronation. All very confusing....

  • I’m usually far more prepared for my weekly scribbling, but I’m just behind today. I’m exhausted by everything going on at work, at home, and globally. Remembering 9/11 isn’t all that fun. We had friends in NYC and it took days to hear whether they were all right, and we heard that in a roundabout way. Thankfully everyone we knew was ok.

I’m praised at work for my calm demeanor, but maybe I shouldn’t be so calm all the time. The only time I let loose is in the car when I see bad driving and I comment on it loudly. My wife tells me I need to stop doing that when she’s in the car with me. It’s a hard habit to break. Things that are happening around us are starting to upset me more every day. I must stay calm and find an appropriate outlet to vent. Time to drive around a bit.

And when I’m in the car I listen to music. Doesn’t always help, but I drive with artists like in today’s podcast, which includes Tim Buckley, Beck, Paul Weller, Rickie Lee Jones, Ocean Colour Scene, David Byrne, Norah Jones, Jesca Hoop, Lee Dorsey, Sharon Jones, Flo & Eddie, the Monkees, Lou Ann Barton, Clarence Gatemouth Brown, and Roomful of Blues. • The little guy was sick this week. He had a slight fever, coughing, runny nose, and the bad mood you get when you’re sick. Not jumping to conclusions, but being level-headed, we thought, “COVID?” After he didn’t shake it after three days, we decided to test him (and keep him home from daycare. This meant another day of having my wife watch him).

Usually, watching him means lots of outdoor time: going to the park where he swings, goes on the slide, and runs around. He loves doing that. He’s very much become an action child. But now that he’s sick, he has to stay indoors. Which he doesn’t like, on top of being cranky from not feeling well. Not a good recipe for being with him.

Results came back negative, so it’s just the bug that’s been going around to compete with COVID. Good to make sure. This is a time to remain vigilant. Kate, Nick, and I have been fine: Lindsay, the little guy’s mom, is now sick with the same thing. We all feel relieved.

Great pod today, with artists Lydia Loveless, Shellyann Orphan, St. Etienne, Donald Fagen, Fleetwood Mac, Stealer’s Wheel, Brenda Holloway, Los Fabulosos Blueshakers, the Cosmic Trip Advisors, Garbage, Kirsty MacColl, Sam Phillips, and Pete Case.

  • A couple of weeks ago someone was talking about how they had planned to finish something in October. “October?” I thought, “why so late in the year?” Then Friday happened, and it’s October 1. “Oh, we are getting to the end of the year.” It’s been another long year, but the end is in sight. It’s October. We’ve had actual fall weather here this week, with some slight warming coming at the end of this week. Oh, well. I love fall weather – crisp, cool mornings, warm beautiful days, and cold nights. It’s the perfect weather for me.

There are many birthdays of friends and family in October, including my birthday. You know what my birthday means – let’s give money to the city and state when I register my cars for the year. Happy birthday, Pat. Please make the check payable to…Does that seem right? What about the random number on the license plate? I should do this in May -my car license plate ends in a 5. Welcome to fall.

Today’s podcast is excellent, with Bruce Springsteen, Robert Gordon, Patti Smith, Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes, Family, the Who, the Groundhogs, Samantha Fish, St. Vincent, Florence & the Machine, Spiritualized, Ride, and the Catherine Wheel.

  • You’re the only other person I know that does that. Ha! Whenever my birthday rolls around on Oct. 2, I start arranging to get stuff done like getting the car inspected and oil change so I can have that October sticker on my windshield. My physical usually happens around this time too, but the pandemic has changed that schedule some. I chalk it up, a bit, to memory. It seems like a good time to remind myself of these yearly things. Off to getting the inspections done tomorrow morning…

Birthday Oct 2nd? Congratulations! I turned 59 yesterday!
  • Look at all of these October birthdays. I blame cold January nights.
  • I turned 63 yesterday. I was “suppose to arrive” on the 1st.
This tells me that my parents “celebrated” NewYears!
    Congratulations on your b-day too!
We share with Groucho and Gandhi you know.

My mind's eye is now seeing Groucho starring in a Gandhi biopic, no disrespect to either.
  • Hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend, or as my wife calls it, another Monday with me around. Such is the life of a retiree. I won’t know what that feels like for 5 more years (not that I’m counting – do you want work days or just all days between now and when I hang ’em up?).

On today’s pod, we go back and listen to Bob Dylan, John Prine, David Crosby, Blood, Sweat & tears, Traffic, the Moody Blues, the Move, the Nazz, Badfinger, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Solomon Burke, and James Carr.

  • Look at all of these October birthdays. I blame cold January nights

Mine was yesterday - grand old age of 71. When my 8 year old grandson asked how old I was yesterday morning, he exclaimed "That is ancient" !! I can only hope that when he is 71 he remembers me in the way I remember my grandparents.
  • I mentioned to my wife that it seemed odd that, noticing Ocasio-Cortez’ birthday was yesterday, she was born 2 years after we met. Didn’t seem possible, but, yup!
  • I went to a concert on Thursday night – a real-life concert! It was just like the before times…well, except it took longer to get in the concert because we had to show our vaccination cards, and we had to mask up all night. But other than that – a real-life concert!

We saw St. Vincent in Boston at the Wang Theatre. She was great, and the band was excellent. She featured many songs from her latest album – Daddy’s Home – but threw in some of the older tunes as well.

Not only that, but we are going to another concert next week. It’s going to really be like the before times, except for the vaccine cards and the masks. One has to learn to adapt.

Great podcast today. Songs from Esperanza Spaulding, Xavier Rudd, Tinsley Ellis, the Members, the Distractions, the Buzzcocks, Any Trouble, Cheap Trick, XTC, Julian Cope, Kaleidoscope, the Gosdin Brothers, Michael Hurley, and Delbert McClinton.

  • glad to see you getting to some shows.  I'm going to see Elvis Costello in Providence next week - what's next for you?
  • The Mavericks are coming to town next week. They've postponed twice already but should be good to go.
  • The world circled the sun one more time with me on the planet on Friday. I am now 62 years old. I believe as we get older we are supposed to accumulate wisdom, but I’m out of the wisdom game. I think that I was a lot smarter and wiser when I was younger (and more willing to take risks and do some amazingly stupid things), but I’ve traded that in for stability and a certain amount of dullness. Such is life.

Maybe that’s wisdom – stability and a certain amount of dullness. Behold my new philosophy! Keeps me alive and going, so I’ll celebrate that (albeit in a very low-key, dare I say dull, way).

Music is never dull (well…), at least what I ut on toady’s podcast, so listen to Jesca Hoop, David Byrne & St. Vincent, John Cale, Jethro Tull, David Bowie, Roxy Music, Joe Tex, Johnnie Taylor, Tyrone Davis, Arthur Alexander, Ted Taylor, Aimee Mann, Tim Finn, and Sam Phillips.

  • Happy Halloween everyone! The weather’s been bad for trick or treating around here, but should be good tonight. Shouldn’t be too cold, wither, so Batman doesn’t have to wear a winter jacket over his costume.

Let’s focus on some great music in today’s podcast, with Pokey LaFarge, David Crosby, Phoebe Bridgers, the Beatles, Elton John, Neil Young, Stan Ridgeway, Frank Black, Throwing Muses, XTC, the Jam. St. Vincent, and Sharon Van Etten.
