Stunning new album by Mdou Moctar, “Funeral for Justice”
AMG says “this is the album that cements Moctar's place as a contemporary guitar god and not just one from Africa………...(he recalls) Latin American guitar hero Carlos Santana, whose tight band and boldly psychedelic album covers serve as a template for Moctar's own throwback aesthetic. The title track and opener (see YouTube Video below) kicks off with a thunderous '70s rock-inspired riff before segueing into the circular rhythms and intricate guitar patterns that are the group's bailiwick. Sung in the Tamasheq language, its fiery lyrics are undeniably combative, challenging African leaders to reclaim their independence and cut ties with Western oppressors.”
Leo Kottke Another favourite would be My Father's Face as he made his way out of the '80s and Peculiaroso from the '90s. He always makes me think of watching my Dad playing the guitar so effortlessly. I can see him now...
Hello again! Thought I'd better post something in case anyone thought that I'd drowned on the overnight ferry to Aberdeen on the way to last weekend's Tectonics festival in Glasgow. Ka Baird probably the standout session there although others had very good sets. Anyway back to sorting out semi recent purchases (I didn't buy anything last BC Friday as I don't trust me using my phone for purchases over unsecured hotel wi-fi).
This is a bit of the old Berlin School synth business self admittedly influenced very strongly by Virgin era Tangerine Dream.
That particular album is pretty faithful to the Phaedra era soundwise. Sometimes I hate myself for liking these copyists but there really aren't that many classic TD albums if you don't like the sound quality of so many of the boots.
