An album of countrified singer-songerwriter music, but I suspect this guy has listened to a few punk bands in his life. Indeed, I detect echoes of Titus Andronicus in the lyrics. The album is also a concept album, using the "Old West" to contemplate mortality. Sparse, acoustic, at times maudlin. Tracks 2 and 4 are quite good.
Followed by a new, for me, artist. I stumbled across a live recording - Live at the Jazz Festival Willisau 2010, Willisau, Switzerland; August 25, 2010 - which so impressed me I ran right to emu for this, the only recording available there.
Flurries of notes mix it up with pungent chords not found in any Ted Greene book, played with an aggressive tone and sharp attack - sometimes subtly distorted and bent, sometimes clean and acoustic. Whether playing in her phenomental duo with violist Jessica Pavone, fronting with Mary Halvorson Trio with bassist John Hebert and drummer Ches Smith, avant-barnstorming in legendary saxophonist Anthony Braxtons trio, or hitting the alternarock scene in her duo People with drummer Kevin Shea, Mary Halvorson orchestrates with her guitar, using counterpoint, textures and lines with nary a cliche to be found.
Time might have moved on but Halvorsons music is decidedly of the avant-garde bent. With her demure looks, those expecting some quiet drive time music had better park elsewhere.

Snow day, so it is very quiet in the office today. So I am indulging in some jazz: Jackie McLean and Gene Ammons, now this fine work from Mal Waldron.

Romance in the Executive Branch by Wiggly Tendrils
Playful, TMBG-style romp through America's Federal Era. Definitely worth at least one listen. NYOP.
- Free track from the coming Low album.
Hypnoticon by Teeth of the Sea
Third track renders me unable to sit still. Fantastic.
Animals, Suns & Atoms by Tarwater
I'm a sucker for their vaguely literary lyrics and deadpan delivery.
I'd almost forgotten about JZ.

OK background downtempo. Harmless.
