Wow ! - "In January of this year, The New York Guitar Festival hosted The Apollo Project, a live re-imagining of Brian Enos 1983 album Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks. Marking the 30th anniversary of the album, the performance took place at New Yorks World Financial Center Winter Garden and featured Brooklyn ambient ensemble Itsnotyouitsme (guitarist Grey McMurray and violinist Caleb Burhans), multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell, Phish bassist Mike Gordon, Brooklyn guitarist Noveller, Tortoises Jeff Parker and composer David Torn.
The musicians performed the album in its entirety, offering loose interpretations of the ambient music written as a tribute to the NASA moon landings. Also featured behind the musicians were scenes from the Craig Teper documentary Man In The Right Seat, a chronicle of Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchells epiphany in space. Following the completion of Enos Apollo album, the group of musicians improvised for several minutes on free-form ambient structures."
confused, Metric's Synthetica was my favorite pop release this past year, a family favorite too. Given that I preach that there are only rude words, and not "bad" ones, and that music is exempt, I find it pretty hilarious to hear my kids sing along "I'm as fucked up as they say...".

-A Josh Sinton ensemble that I've been meaning to follow up on for months. So many lists scattered across my room and so little time to read & listen. Jon Irabagon and Mike Pride also contribute. Totes modern jazz, with avant-garde tendencies, chamber jazz serenity, and post-rock meandering.

Been mostly off this thread for a while - work travel and family vacation (the destination of which ended up changing hours before departure due to passport issues, but we still had a good time). Back in town for a little bit now.
Those in the UK will probably have in the past listened to Mike's show on BBC Radio 2 - after the BBC decided they no longer wanted his show, Mike's weekly Folk Show continues on the internet. A wide selection of the best folk, roots and acoustic music.

This album was one of the obvious gaps in my knowledge of jazz. Bought it this afternoon. Hearing it for the first time is a joyous thing.
Also started reading the Thelonious Monk Reader - am starting to discover the pleasure of listening to jazz while reading good/interesting writing about it. It's a lot harder to do that with the other genres I listen to a lot (MiG notwithstanding :-))
