Hmmm,...theology of time....tough to summarize on a message board scale. It's an interdisciplinary group assembled by Stanley Hauerwas, and there are some varied interests. There are some systematic theologians, who are engaged with the kinds of questions raised by, say the closing chapters of Augustine's confessions or the discussion of eternity in Barth's church dogmatics (e.g., if time, as part of time/space, is part of what is created, then God is outside time and the notion of a time before creation is meaningless, so how does God relate to creatures that are inside time; is time linear or part of a four-dimensional relational matrix such that "event x is before event y" only makes sense within a certain frame, in the same way that "Chicago is to the left of New York" only makes sense from certain positions in space, which fits with general relativity, in which case maybe what God "sees" is the sum total of all spatiotemporal relationships without linear succession (which would make sense of notions like the lamb slain before the foundation of the world)); is the notion of measurable time inherently tied to death; and so on.) some folk are interested in political theology around this (e.g. Jonathan Tran is a participant and we read his book on the theology of time and the Vietnam war, which argues - crudely summarized - that American notions of time as linear and running out and masterable fed into the Vietnam conflict, which can be read from one angle as the imposition of a certain way of experiencing time/history on another people). Some of us (like me) are interested in quite down to earth questions (so my kind of question is, for instance, given that it has been shown that if you train elementary school teachers to wait three seconds (yes, three seconds takes training for North Americans) before accepting an answer to a question they ask, students' responses are longer and more complex and a wider range of students volunteer answers, in other words the way we impose certain ways of living in time on students in educational settings affects things like who gets included and how we reflect on things, then apparently practical pedagogical questions about how we use and shape learning time might actually be connected to Christian ethics; another participant is interested in how mental health is connected to the ability to sustain a sense of one's life as a purposeful narrative, and what that means, and how it connects to his therapeutic work with combat veterans). As you can see, it is a pretty wide-ranging discussion, which is frustrating at times, but it is quite stimulating. I may or may not be able to say more about any particular question if you are interested; this is my stab at a quick overview of what we are doing.
Rarely post here, but wandered by and saw GP's post on theology of time -- I am a Geographer interested in the intersection of space and faith. A theology of space and/or place, perhaps? Carry on!
Hi garoy. Yes, they are surely somehow connected. I presume you know this? (That's about as far as my knowledge of the theology/geography conversation stretches). @luddite, it is very difficult to discuss time for two days without inadvertent puns!
Har is an American solo ambient artist, as well as guitarist/bassist/Chapman Stickist for the experimental art-rock band Christus and The Cosmonaughts (Beta-Lactam Ring Records recording artists).
Fascinating GP, thanks. I think I made sense of most of it, but the bit about enabling teachers to wait three seconds for a response does apply here too, I can assure you. One of the things we have been working upon lately is to encourage teachers to give time to children to talk in pairs/small groups before responding to questions, but making sure that the children have sufficient time to discuss properly, not just 15-20 seconds. I'll also follow up your link for garoy as a geography educator. The discussion about time has led me to play this

I said recently that I didn't quite get the love for YG. With this album, I get it. Really, really good.
Just too bad the best tune (and likely one of the best hip hop tunes of the year) is called "My N****". I can't sing along with that!
