Compilations of post-punk, D.I.Y., early new wave, concept rock, avant-garde noodlings (with a beat), bizarre hardcore, obscure demos / early tracks by famous bands, anachronistic glam, and other lost causes far from the norm or weirdly beautiful that came in the wake of the first punk explosion in Los Angeles.
Saw these guys open for Over the Rhine a week or so back. Quite pleasant. Those who like acoustic indie folk more than I do may well like it more than I do. Their first two albums are free to download from their site. (picture links to the download page)
WOW ! Steven Mackey & Rinde Eckert with Big Farm & JACK Quartet
- Live from Kaufman Music Center's Ecstatic Music Festival.
"On Mar. 20 at 7:30 p.m., new-music supergroup Big Farm, consisting of guitarist-composer Steven Mackey, composer-director and accordionist Rinde Eckert, bassist Lek Darger and So Percussion's Jason Treutingtook the stage with JACK Quartet for the penultimate concert of the 2013 Ecstatic Music Festival.
The JACK Quartet opened the evening with the world premiere of Eckert's Of Wood and Bone and Mackey's String Theory, composed specifically for the quartet. Eckert, a Pulitzer Prize finalist for Drama and an Obie Award winner, shared a Grammy last year with Mackey and ensemble Eighth Blackbird for their 2011 album, and previous Q2 Music Album of the Week, "Lonely Motel."
Big Farm then performed music from their forthcoming debut releasea theatrical hybrid of heady math rock, funk and absurdist blues. They were joined on stage by JACK Quartet for two collaborative numbers: the sprawling, cinematic Lost In Splendor and the driving show-closer Salad Days." More Big Farm @ Emusers
Thanks Plong42 - always something worthwhile on this compilations. The Mexican Summer album is also worth the download. Interesting that Amazon have it n the UK but & digital have it in the USA
Free book on Kindle about the Grateful Dead. Can't say if it's good.
A career-spanning overview of the Grateful Dead's long strange trip. Includes brand-new artwork, listenable discography, and original essays by Dennis McNally, the band's longtime publicist.
I heard a song by Adam Faucett (who I never heard of before) which prompted me to search for some of his music. Very slim pickin's - I found only one used CD over at Amazon for a totally unreasonable price - but I found a freebie of one of his songs on Bandcamp. It turns out it wasn't on one of his albums, but rather on a compilation by a company called Sixty Years War Collective:
Sixty Years War Collective is presenting a series of Mixtapes, showcasing great independent artists who are not necessarily associated with the collective. For each mixtape, one member of the collective will pick ten of their favorite independent musicians and bands. The mixtapes include a broad range of styles, including electronica, folk, pop, rock, singer-songwriter, etc.
There are 6 Sixty Years War Collective full-length mixtapes on Bandcamp and all of them are free. Check them all outat the Collective's Bandcamp page.
There were a bunch of free samplers in an email from eMu today, including Global Jukebox Records: An Alan Lomax Sampler, 42 minutes of old timey Alan Lomax field recordings. Then there is this gem: A Sampler of Sounds from ESP, including Timothy Leary, Charles Manson, Pharaoh Sanders, the New York Art Quartet, and many many more.

See http://zondagochtendconcert.radio4.nl/ - this week's download is the "Stabat Mater" by Pergolesi.
This came out in 2011, but a search did not reveal mention of it in this thread. Free eight minute piano/drone work from the worthy Antonymes.
Enjoyable free piano jazz album by one Paolo di Sabatino from Jamendo.
