Back in the office after a trip last week, and catching up on recent jazz releases:
The Evans set lives up to its rave reviews, in my inexpert opinion. If I'm not mistaken, it has gone down in price on eMu...was 11-something, now 8-something.
-featured Brooklyn ambient ensemble Itsnotyouitsme (guitarist Grey McMurray and violinist Caleb Burhans), multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell, Phish bassist Mike Gordon, Brooklyn guitarist Noveller, Tortoises Jeff Parker and composer David Torn.
Something I picked up from the TMT 30 so-far list, this is really good; and updated twist on country; a rooted version of the twisted pop that's going on now.
eta: really, really good. I think Daniel, Craig, Thom and kez, and maybe Bad Thoughts should try to listen to this.
A "must check out" for all the dub fans out there: Hour Magazine wrote: - Delhi 2 Dublin is the United Nations of rock n roll. The Vancouver, Canada-based band plays an energetic mash-up of Bhangra, Celtic, Dub, Reggae and Electronica with global rhythms and club beats. Tarun Nayar, Sanjay Seran, Andrew Kim and Ravi Binning, along with guest musicians Jaron Freeman-Fox and Sara Fitzpatrick, are diverse in both their backgrounds and musical influences. The band has been together almost six years and has released four full-length albums plus the latest EP, Delhi 2 Dubland."

I'm playing this again. If you like Amy Winehouse and/or Adele you will certainly like this, but I think her appeal is much wider than either. The pricing of the album also shows the way things are going. There are two versions, standard 12 track and bonus 16 track. Amazon is selling the standard mp3 for £4.99 and the bonus as a CD at £8.49. itunes has the standard version at £7.99 and the bonus version at £10.99. Yet I bought the bonus version CD at £8 in an HMV store. It seems ridiculous that itunes charge virtually £3 more for a mp3 than a store chain can sell it as as a CD!
Dirty Beaches - Badlands - I like this; it's the only time I've ever heard a loop sampled from Les Rallizes Denudes, which I might not have caught if I hadn't been listening to them in te car all week.
Then:
Both from Mog; I am enjoying this streaming thing so far.
I am stuck in a hotel lobby listening to the most excruciatingly muzakish muzak I've ever heard. I think I might have to dig out my headphones just to retain my sanity. If I, devoid of musical talent as I am, were given some equipment and some basic instructions an hour to make some downtempo music, this is what it would sound like.
OK, muzakwatertorture replaced with offthesky. From Purgatorio to Paradiso. Listening to my collection of offthesky non-album tracks from various compilation albums to which he has contributed. Some lovely stuff here.
Now listening to gift ii by offthesky. Jason Corder (=offthesky) has a strategy with some releases of offering them for free via netlabels but offering a free extra EP if you pay a modest price for them on bandcamp. I think it's a good strategy - leaves me feeling happy that I supported him and happy that I got an extra album. This one is very nice.
Jazz re:freshed has been alive and kicking for nine years now and during those nine years, weve had the pleasure of hosting hundreds of amazing bands. When we started out we just did not have the equipment to document these shows sonically, only managing to capture the odd video clip for posterity. Thus some our most memorable musical moments are only etched in the memories of those that experienced them first hand.
A couple of years ago, we started to record the audio from the shows on very rudimentary recording devices (just for our own enjoyment). The audio quality was far from perfect, but where they fell short in audible clarity, they still managed to capture the vibe and energy of Jazz re:freshed.
For the years of support youve given us at Jazz re:freshed, we have decided to cobble together some of the better recorded tracks as a free gift to say thank you. These tracks capture not only the enthusiasm and passion for the music that the Jazz re:freshed patrons have, but also the richness and diversity of the music; yes, the recordings may be rough round the edges, but it kicks! You may have been at one these gigs and might even hear yourself cheering on the track
We have named the album Prelude because now that we have upgraded the sound system at the venue, we are now able to record bands at a much higher quality. Thus, this album is a prelude to the exquisitely recorded Jazz re:freshed Live Series... coming soon
A good morning discovering and downloading jazz from Bandcamp. It makes up for the heavy rain that has just started yet again. We've had a really wet summer so far - rainfall ten plus times more than average. Apparently the very hot weather on the east coast of USA is the cause, as it is affecting the jet streams across the Atlantic. No end is in sight - the ten day forecast suggests heavy rain most days until the end of next week, which is where the forecast ends!

Something to brighten up this miserable British summer
Liking this very much. Nyop on Bandcamp. The cover art i could find is either ginormous or tiny, so I chose tiny.
One of my favorite releases of 2011.
