- Not a very good quality, but I was there !
- And one of the most intense shows I have ever attented, and a night I will remember for the rest of my life.
Yeah, there was flu going round at the last conference I did - that and all the traveling/exhaustion and it's not a huge surprise. I am so glad it waited until I was home to manifest - 30 hours in planes with this would have sucked massively. Might catch some Olympics later - haven't made it it of bed yet ( and our one TV is downstairs).
Opening ceremony was interesting - as an ex-pat l found myself waxing nostalgic as the flow of iconic Britishness unfolded. Normally I am not overly sentimental about being in England, but parts of that got to me,
Listening to Gotye, Making Mirrors, one of the 99c haul. Quite enjoyable.
I enjoyed the Opening Ceremony. The central conceit of the music section was awful, but the music itself was of course great. My wife and I were laughing hysterically at the salute to national health care with Mitt Romney in attendance, and the Queen/James Bond stuff was fantastic (especially the corgis).
Thanks to the ceremony I'm now listening to:
Took me forever to identify "Surf Solar" during the initial video. I knew I not only recognized the song, but that I actually owned it, still couldn't put it together. I think that was based on subconsciously thinking there was no way Fuck Buttons would get played in that instance.
WOW ! ! !
- It's (pop) album of the year material, it's MIG material, It's New & Notable material, it's f...... awesome !
- And an album that will instantly kick the shit out of GP's flu. (I wish you a speedy recovery)
- Soundcloud
ETA: Could it really be Lou Reed on vocals on "The Wanderlust" ?
Listening to that Metric on Soundcloud and enjoying it. I don't know Garbage, but maybe I'll have to check them out. I don't listen to a lot of Muse, but despite the obvious difference of a female singer Metric sort of reminds me of Muse.
The other day I visited the library but I was late for an appointment and had only a few minutes. Instead of rummaging through the music shelves I just grabbed box sets that were on top. I accidentally wound up getting a lot of piano music. None are new releases, but they all seem very good so far: With 8 cds this alone is a lot of piano music! Recorded about a week before his death. Mykal Gilmore's chapter in his book Night Beat about Jarrett was pretty much character assassination, but even he conceded Jarrett's talent. What struck me right away here was the player I didn't expect much from because I wasn't familiar with him: drummer Vinnie Colaiuta. Boy is he good though. I've never given Newman the attention he deserved, so this will remedy that.
"Denver based producer and sound artist offthesky..." I'll have to listen for that reason, even if for no other. Sounds nice so far, though. Thanks BN & GP.
bn, glad that you like Synthetica so much. denver, if you're unfamiliar with Garbage, check out their first two albums: Garbage and Version 2.0. Both 90s pop-synth-punk-indie classics.
For those longtime fans of Garbage, I guarantee you'll love this extended 8-bit version of Version 2.0.
BN - Metric did an in studio performance with the local public radio music station and Emily Haines (the lead singer) told the story of meeting Lou Reed. Apparently a couple years ago she was at some charity event or something or other and he was there too. She really wanted to meet him, but didn't think he'd have any clue who she or her band were. Then he came up to her and said, "Emily, so who would you rather be. The Beatles or the Rolling Stones?" A direct reference to Metric's last album. I have to had it to her, she thought better on her feet in that situation than I would and responded, "Lou, I'd rather be the Velvet Underground."
You can hear the performance (which is great and largely acoustic) and see video of the "Youth Without Youth" performance: here.
For me, listening to Dropsonde again is confirming my feeling when I last listened to N-Plants that that album does not measure up to his earlier material. The textures on Dropsonde are so much richer.
I don't see anything on sale at eMu. Classics Online, however, is having a different Naxos sale each month. This month is Early Music. $5.59 isn't great, but considering the recordings are better rips than what's at eMu ...
Now listening to Mahler's 3rd from the Big Mahler Box - sort of a comparison, sort of just drilling it in to my head. I think I like the box set version a little better, although I couldnt exactly say why.
B. Fleischmann, I'm not ready for the grave yet. This is from the Morr Drip.fm releases. I was not familiar with this artist. It reminds me of Tarwater, but with a cheerier, slightly less sardonic edge. Quite enjoyable.
Sun Araw & the Congos - Icon Give Thank - still $2.99 at amazo I think and highly recommended - I hesitated a lot about getting this but I'm really glad I did.
Then, Bruce Springsteen, live in Kansas City, June 16, 1978. Greg - your post of a live '78 album the other day inspired me to search - this was at Big - O - Zine - not the one you rec'd, but it is very good. link.
I've been intrigued by that album, amclark2, but I'm not a big psychedelic guy so Sun Araw is kind of hit and miss for me. Is the album more towards them or The Congos?

Can you at least enjoy some Olympics while you're laid up?

Thanks, BN. And I'll give the prescription a try!

It's for the most part GP. I will recommend to check out his excellent MIG post Vital Albums: The Door in the Wall

From this one:
I think there is a Naxos sale going on at eMU, btw
- Thanks, will check it out.

I had forgotten how marvelous stretches of this are. The title track especially is ecstatic.
