This is fun. Like a more melodic Ergo Phizmiz in places. G. The song 'Cloud Cuckooland' will either make your day or annoy you to pieces. It's making me smile.
Synth pop duo that has a harder edge than most. I saw them on Friday and they were alright, but not great. They are faaaaar better on tape. The lead singer reminds me a fair bit of Karen O.
If you like synth/electronic music at all, follow the link to Bandcamp where it is Free/NYOP.
Eta: wow wow wow! Thanks Doofy for reminding me about Sir Douglas Quintet; I had a best of before, but as always, the collections leave out so many great songs. For those interested, this, and other albums are all available as part of the Complete Mercury Masters on G; will be getting more.
Amazon reviewers don't seem all that keen on this one. I'm really enjoying it.
AAJ review says:
Elixir is a magical, entrancing album that entices the listener primarily through sound rather than rhythm or pulse. Mazur plays not only many different kinds of drums but also pitched instruments including marimba, bowed vibraphone, waterphone and various gongs and bells. The resultant sounds create an aura in which time stops, carrying us away to mysterious places that feel very large.
Not quite there yet amc! I've heard about this for decades. It was a much fabled concert for TV around the time it was recorded back in 1968, almost as much as the Beach Boys Smile, yet, of course, was only released a few years ago. The UK's largest CD/DVD store, HMV, is going into administration (a form of bankruptcy, hoping to be sold) so I went to look at our local store this morning as many things werer advertised as 25% off. This was one of three things I bought. Much else was still expensive compared to downloads, which is where their problem lies.
Not sure who Dirty Mac is - it is next up so that will help. Eric Clapton? John Lennon? I'll have a better clue in 5 minutes or so!
Update - very obvious when you read the sleeve notes - John Lennon lead vocals and guitar, Eric Clapton lead guitar, backed by Keith Richards and Mitch Mitchell,
The Dirty Mac were a one-time English supergroup consisting of John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Mitch Mitchell that Lennon put together for The Rolling Stones' TV special entitled The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus.
Keith Richards played bass!
I had a friend in college who was sort of a Rolling Stones completist, and he had all these bootleg cd's that he'd bought in Germany, and my roommate and I were really into the White Album at the time, so we loved that version of Yer Blues, but had no idea why it was on a Stones bootleg comp., and although there was an Internet back then it wasn't quite what it is now (this was about '93); then, a few years ago when the Rolling Stones showed up on emusic briefly (pre major label days), I saw that album and figured it out, and downloaded that one song.
I'm curious if someone from the UK of your age would see "the Dirty Mac" as a sort of euphemism; I sort of assumed it was, but maybe it's just a translation error?
Certainly back then, Dirty Mac had very specific conotations, although I suspect fewer people now upto say their 30s would probably understand the meaning in this context. I only bought it now out of interest because it was quite cheap for a CD. I can understand why their was a lot of interest back then - it was originally meantto be a TV show, but, it was rumoured then, the artists were so under the influence of drugs for much of the time that the TV company then dare not release it. Lets say, other than one or two tracks, it is probably not that good.

- "ATTENTION !!! TIMELESS MASTERPIECE !!!
A kind of auto-psychanalysis album mixing/alternating DARK AMBIENT and JUNGLECORE with a drum set very well felt...
This man is able to put a big flashing positive light in your head by passing you through an absolute darkness.
An audio paradox.....
I am sure of one thing; in one hundred years from now, this album will be studied and respected as great classical music....
A fascinating experience....
very too cheap i think...not fair..."
