Hurricanes was written and recording during Hurricane Irene, which made landfall in the Northeast in late August 2011. Pieces were stacked on later, like the opener Alcloud and the laid-back Motherwell, but the heart of Hurricanes was born in a crush of inspiration while winds and rain flooded the landscape.
Hurricanes mark is its richness, texture, and warmth. Its major addition is that sweet, subtle voice of Aimee Bhatia, whose notes make all the difference. Adjectives like patient, gentle, sweet, and dreamy appear frequently across reviews of the album, a true work of ambient minimalism.
The 12 tracks [of Hurricanes] feature ambient textures, with lush atmospheric components that soar above the ordinary. Hurricanes is an immersive listening experience that takes one deep into the music, as the best tonal poems do.
A pensive presentation of sound, complex in its simplicity, powerful in its modesty This album gives the listener an abnormal sense of self, transcending the physical plane into the spiritual, illuminating inner thoughts, desires and even realizations of ones own mortality.
Absolutely flawless, flawless as if shape shifting and moving pictures ambient sound.
lush and relaxing ambient masterpiece
BC: A wonderful gem of a recording. Philip Coombs (Free Jazz)
This album rocks. Dave Sumner (Bird is the Worm)
There is a new surprise around nearly every corner throughout this often fascinating performance. Tom Burris (Free Jazz)
Thanks! I had half a mind to start a thread asking for a playlist....looks like it's coming along anyway. This was the musical offering at the oath ceremony - I can't say it has quite the intended effect on me.
GP - Congrats! I agree about the effect of that song though. I hate, hate, hate it. Honestly, if I were being sworn in as a citizen and they played it, I'd have a hard time not changing my mind about the whole becoming a U.S. citizen thing.
@Craig, thanks. The song seemed a little ironic coming right after quite a good little speech from the immigration services director emphasizing that we did not have to give up our cultural roots and identities to be American, given that those cultural roots and identities might include varying degrees of taste for certain kinds of patriotic sentimentalism and certain musical genres.
I think I like Max Richter better when he is being Max Richter than when he is being Vivaldi.
Thanks to whoever pointed this one out on G (can't find the rec now). It's fantastic. Also, thanks to BigD-Blue and BT for the "Singing Sands" rec. Listened to that yesterday and it's truly great.
