I happened to see this 2012 debut and, after learning that it has left more than one reviewer speechless, I couldn't resist giving it a listen. This guy surely does stand out among a crowd. Hear it on Bandcamp.
Bandcamp: "First post-millenial solo album of EK .Fundamentally , a long suite of songs and scapes for the suite , "Our Captain's Eyes" which clocks in at over 53 minutes. Recorded during a fruitful year when EK lived in Luxembourg."
Very engaging music, even if it seems gimmicky (Native American flutes in natural environment). There's lots of intelligent use of pentatonics and embellishments, and lot's of good improv. It reminds me of Jimmy Giuffre in many ways.
I was about to ask GP how that Jarrett trio album is, but I've become frustrated by their work. As much as these late albums are almost all universally excellent, I find it difficult to tell them apart. Some are free improve; others are standards; they all feature a drop-dead gorgeous version of When I Fall In Love. If I have one (or two), do I need them all?
@BT, I would describe it as OK, enjoyable enough. After some listening I have come to the conclusion that I am not a big Jarrett fan. I really love about the first 10-15 minutes of the first long piece of the Köln concert, but it always loses my interest after that. I like one that I can't remember the title of right now that's a kind of late night slow pieces album. I can tolerate "Belonging" but it doesn't thrill me. I have a similar reaction to the others I've listened to, including the one posted above. I still don't have enough finesse of perception or vocabulary to be able to say why, say, Elm by Beirach captivates me and the Jarrett trio album, while clearly also superbly played, feels more like background noise.
GP - a fact you may not know about John Surman. The three of us are all alumini of the Institute of Education in London! I assume, maybe wrongly, that he did a music PGCE after his degree?
Soundcloud streaming: Arnold Dreyblatt & Megafaun (Live from 2013 Ecstatic Music Festival) - "On Feb. 27, Berlin-based composer and media artist Arnold Dreyblatt joined psych-folk outfit Megafaun for a concert highlighting their longstanding collaboration as part of the Ecstatic Music Festival at Merkin Concert Hall.
The evening was one of a number of collaborations between Dreyblatt and the North Carolina-based band in recent years. In 2007, they collaborated on a set of new Dreyblatt works which they brought on tour throughout the U.S. and in 2012, they appeared together at the third annual Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina. In 2012, Dreyblatt and Magafaun recorded a new album which will be released in the near future."
