I assume, therefore, Craig, that Bowie's album wasn't released there today. I am currently watching a programme about the recording of Please Please Me
Greg - You guys always get new releases on Mondays, but in the States they come out on Tuesdays. I've heard several of the tracks already and am liking what I hear (it's not a pantheon album, but sounds pretty darn good).
Thoughtful performances on harp guitar: a good fusion of medieval and folk melodicism. If it weren't for the New Age trappings (like reverb overkill), this would be excellent.
- "It's an interesting story as to how this album came about: Following a Milano gig by New Yorker Elliott Sharp's Terraplane, Italian vocalist Boris Savoldelli handed the guitarist a copy of his new solo album, "Insanology" (reissued in December of 2011 as MJR042). Sharp was blown away, and later agreed to a guest appearance during Boris' September 2008 performance at The Stone (John Zorn's Lower East Side NYC venue for experimental sounds).SpacerThe day before the show, the pair entered Sharp's Studio zOaR and set a course for extended improvisations and experimentations. The result of these efforts, Protoplasmic, is a session of communicative depth, filled with moments of sheer creative genius. Clearly Boris' most dark and abstract work to date, the album showcases the incredible command and understanding that both musicians possess of their instruments and effects -- and their ability to create and communicate spontaneously. Nothing is out of bounds, and they boldly follow, with abandon, wherever the music carries them.SpacerThis highly-adventurous outing reveals a different facet of the brilliant Boris Savoldelli, showcases the intriguing style and imagination of Elliott Sharp, and is experimental music at its finest and most exploratory."
GP - Yes of course a great word - I need to check my typing here more though!
Craig - it does happen the other way round, sometimes it is a few days later when we get albums. I am sure you will enjoy the album. Unklike some artists of his age, eg Elton John, his voice isn't going, or he just does tracks he can cope with. Some tracks stand out more than others, but the overall impression is good, certainly better than his previous two albums. This will be my fourth complete play after streaming last week and two plays yesterday, and each time I hear something new
I was listening to my car radio this morning (forgot my ipod!) and heard Marvin Gaye's I heard it Through the Grapevine, so it has sent me to listen to some of my favourite Motown tracks. They were certainly singles artists on the whole in the earlier days, but some were amazing tracks. So I am making a playlist of ten or so of my absolute favourites. I'll list them when I have finished!
Well, the new Bowie is 13.99 at Amazon mp3 this morning - and 9.99 on Auto-Rip CD!
Interesting...the mp3 is now $11.99 and the CD + Auto-Rip is $12.99. Still better to get the CD/Auto-Rip, though, as it comes with 3 extra tracks that I didn't notice earlier today.
Criag - I found that if I searched Amazon in the UK for David Bowie it was £8.99, but on their home page it was £4.99 as Download of the Week. I got the 'normal' version, working out that I could buy the three extra tracks at 89p each and still save on the de-luxe version at £10.49.
My Motown playlist ended up as 15 tracks as follows:
Baby Love Diana Ross & The Supremes
Dancing In The Street Martha Reeves & The Vandellas
For Once In My Life Stevie Wonder
I Heard It Through The Grapevine Marvin Gaye
My Girl The Temptations
My Guy Mary Wells
Please Mr. Postman The Marvelettes
Reach Out I'll Be There The Four Tops
Stop Her On Sight (SOS) Edwin Starr
Stop! In The Name Of Love Diana Ross & The Supremes
The Tears Of A Clown Smokey Robinson & The Miracles
This Old Heart Of Mine (Is Weak For You) The Isley Brothers
The Tracks Of My Tears Smokey Robinson & The Miracles
What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted Jimmy Ruffin
Where Did Our Love Go Diana Ross & The Supremes
So far only 42 minutes, but I reckon I could make it up to a great 70 minute CD!
Certainly gives the appearance that AMZ is testing different price points on the Bowie mp3 vs CD. iTunes has the 13.99 (!) price. Of course Amazon has the advantage that you will add extra stuff to your cart to get free shipping.
One of a handful of BYG/Actuel releases to be found on Guvera (or anywhere on mp3).
That led to these from the Golson/Farmer Jazztet box, which feature the young Grachan III:
- "We are thrilled to present the brand new studio album from Volcano The Bear, the band that have, in the words of The Wire magazine, produced some of the finest, wildest British music of the last 10 years on record and on stage. Or, as Losing Today puts it, no one sounds, has sounded, or will ever sound quite like Volcano The Bear. A calculated hysterical melting pot of This Heat, Robert Wyatt, Faust and The Residents, of musique concrète and ethno-folk, all seen through a prism of theatrical improvisations and unhinged set pieces. VTB have released a number of records since the start in 1995, often mixing studio, live and home recordings. Golden Rhythm/Ink Music is their first studio album since Amidst The Noise And Twigs back in 2007. Largely based on the sonic fault-line between Aaron Moore and Daniel Padden, it´s also the most focused and driven of VTBs prolific output so far, showcasing the duos unique musicality and interplay, whilst retaining their trademark eccentricity and humour throughout. It presents rock music as seen through VTBs skewed eye, featuring more of Padden and Moores drum/guitar combination than on previous albums. Taking the bizarre energy of their live duo performances into a studio environment, and combining it with VTBs eclectic instrumentation and Clarence Manuelos singular audio-work, GR/IM shows VTB making their most vital work to date."

@greg - It's the same thing in the US nowadays. We get one new album a week for 5 bucks and 100 albums at 5 bucks for the month. There's been some random $2.99 and $3.99 sales lately, but it's about 10 or 12 interesting titles and 500 greatest hits you can get used for a buck. I'm not really complaining about the sales, but this is one of those times that emphasizes what's popular over in Europe is generally way better than what's popular over here. I'm sure the latest Bon Jovi album since his last bomb 4 years ago is getting more press here than David f'ing Bowie is.
thom - yes Bowie is getting a lot of press at the moment, but I also saw Bon Jovi on TV here this morning too, as he is touring. I certainly get the impression that you have more Amazon deals than we do, but maybe not.
