ETA, I like this better than Watercolors. Stretches of it still reach my ears as "pleasant" (as calibrated between "unpleasant" on the one hand and "compelling" on the other).
My local record store floated the question of "what album would you obliterate from history" on facebook, which I didn't join the discussion on (lots of what you would expect; someone, of course, obliterated hip-hop), but if I did, I would have said Nevermind, because maybe then he'd still be alive, and he could have gone on to do some great things.
Now where did I get 5 awesome-sounding songs from this album, none of which I have listened to before? Pays to check your "Unplayed" smart list once in a while
Another I'd suggest you check out, Metheny/Mays' As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls - curious what you think of the long title track. And if you need an uplifting, anthemic theme to convince you of the value of such, "It's For You" will let us know just how curmudgeonly you are.
And as a reward for slogging through all this Metheny, here's a nice later Abercrombie you may have missed, featuring a "highly regarded" (similar to Metheny in terms of being both wildly lauded and occasionally dissed) saxophonist Michael Brecker (I'm a lauder): John Abercrombie's Night, which is hard to find on Guvera, but search on Michael Brecker and find the misfiled album in that list. (ETA: Ah, same with Abercrombie's Getting There.)
Ha, I searched for "Night" not 5 minutes ago and failed to find it - many thanks! After the last day or two I'll have to name a small wing of my Guvera download collection after you. Will check Wichita.
I've loved Current Events since it came out - that's where I heard one of my very favorite ballads for the first time: Sammy Fain's "Alice In Wonderland".
I saw Pat Metheny live on the Full Circle tour and it was a fantastic gig, he played for over 2 and 1/2 hours. I have been a fan for years from American Garage onwards.
Lyle Mays who plays with him brought out a brilliant solo record and if you can track it down it is worth listen.
Lowlife, I like that Lyle Mays record, but hate the extremely gauzy mix: often you can barely hear Frisell, and sometimes can't really tell the difference between Drewes' sax and Frisell's guitar. I'd love to hear a different mix of that album.
I loves me some Kenny Barron, even on electric piano. There's a lot of great old Savoy stuff on Guv, if you can get past the atrociously generic cover images.
eta, Prof, as an electronic music person, I would think you'd at least appreciate 'As Falls Wichita." I remember when a friend first played it for me back in the day...an ear-opening experience. Before that, I associated synths mainly with the rococo excesses of Yes, ELP, etc. (Yes, that's how long ago it was!)
eta2, that Kenny Barron album was originally on Muse, not Savoy.
@Doofy, use of synths in general is not much of a predictor - there's plenty of electronic music I find trite and annoying. But I am quite enjoying Wichita so far. I need to listen to the long track again - am working and so not paying full attention. The shorter tracks on the second side have some energy and sparkle that animates the prettiness. Just getting to "It's for you", the curmudgeon test according to kargatron.

I like this much better. Thanks, Kargatron.
ETA, though it got tiring as it went on.

Yes, I am a child of the '90's.

My favorite Metheny so far, not so consistently bright and glossy as the others I listened to; I like the pensive tone. Might actually dl this one.

There may come a time when I only get my music via drip.fm... or Guvera...
Nice country-americana debut album from an all female quartet with good harmonies. One of the singers is the daughter of Kevin Welch.
This does not seem to be on Spotify, but it is on Guvera, though listed as "As Falls Wichitam..."
Just starting it, will report back.
Beach House - Bloom
Grabbing the image I note that it is currently $2.99 at Amazon. It's worth way more than that.
