Old favorite. We actually heard Nos 3 and 4 played by Chicago Symphony Thursday night.
In between, Yo Yo Ma and Giovanni Sollima played this goofy double cello concerto of Sollima's (comissioned by Ma). As the review states, "A work for the ages? Hardly. But the concerto is well-made and, in Thursday's terrific premiere performance, sent the audience home happy." Interestingly, many passages were clearly inspired by the sounds of electronic music, of course re-created acoustically by the Symphony musicians. The "ocean drum" mentioned in the review was pretty cool.
Big Schubert doings at CSO this month; we're going back for a Schubert Mass (w/ chorus) next week.
