@BT - Yes, the Jazz Loft 50 for $50 is a good value; so far nothing that I would toss out as junk or filler. There are a few that stretch into non-jazz genres to my way of thinking, but I have enjoyed those a great deal.
Clearing out some folders and tagging stuff I ran across this, which I downloaded for my youngest daughter some time back at her request. Actually rather enjoying it so far.
From back in the days when Serein was a Netlabel 1000 Hours of Staring - The Seagull (April 21, 2006) - "Hot on the heels of their debut EP at Serein, 'Cooperative Thread', it is time again to welcome 1000 Hours of Staring to the Serein catalogue. The lineup this time includes David Daranjo and Mike Kazantsis working alongside Mike Ramsey. This change in ranks marks also a distinct change in sound for the group, leaving behind the gentle melodies of 'Cooperative Thread' in favour of densely layered sound.
Thick with the tones of guitars, keyboards and whispers of vocal samples and field recordings, 'The Seagull' is a composition of epic proportions. Listening to the piece, I can't help but recall memories of bands such as Ash Ra Tempel and Tangerine Dream, and that's no bad thing. With its distant guitar drones and modulating, pulsing soundscapes, each minute drags you deeper into the sleepy world where 1000 Hours of Staring make their home.
This is a piece of music to explore, a fairy-tale story revealing new adventures wich each listen. This is one for life's daydreamers. Beautiful artwork from Alanna Gladstone compliments once more."
One of the perks of my new job allows me to join the City of London libraries which stocks a vast amount of music including the Barbican music library which is one of the biggest in the UK.
Ian Hawgood - Piano Works
Then:
The Long Seasoned Sleep by Tiny Isles
Christopher Hipgrave - computers, manipulation, magnification...stuff like that
Ian Hawgood - synths, samples, electronic beats, guitars, singing, whacking, walloping...that kind of thing
Jason Corder - vibes, organic beats, tinkly stuff, you know...
Manchester (UK) based folk band, but actually much more than that as there are, eg, jazz influences. For samples of their work go to their website
Update - I am really liking this album, released in 2010. I came across this band by reading a review of their latest album at Bright Young Folk Although it is on the same label as their second album, above, and was released at the end of October emusic, of course, do not have it. I still have credits left, due to expire in a couple of days, yet I will probably download something that would not be my first choice....
V/A - Purple Snow: Forecasting the Minneapolis Sound
I've been anxiously awaiting this Numero Group release. It got an 8.4 and Best New Reissue from P4K, and it's obviously right in my wheelhouse. Now I just need to get to a record store to pick up a physical copy (Spotify streaming at the moment). The liner notes are supposed to be fantastic.
- "Shaker Loops is Adams' first real masterpiece, and one of his most enduring scores ... This recording captures the work's brilliant melding of Minimalist motivic development and Neo-Romantic power. . . ." New Albion Records
- "Composer, conductor, and creative thinker - John Adams occupies a unique position in the world of American music. His works, both operatic and symphonic, stand out among contemporary classical compositions for their depth of expression, brilliance of sound, and the profoundly humanist nature of their themes. Over the past 25 years, Adamss music has played a decisive role in turning the tide of contemporary musical aesthetics away from academic modernism and toward a more expansive, expressive language, entirely characteristic of his New World surroundings. . . . ." http://www.earbox.com
Oh man ! - (posted just 2 hours ago on Soundcloud) Four Tet - Live in Tokyo
Recorded at 3:35pm on the 1st December 2013 at the Hostess Club Weekender in Tokyo, Japan.
#15 from Jazz Loft - [url=http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=13005Hank Jones, Milt Henton, Bobby Rosengarden - "The Trio"[/url]. Re-issue of the 1977 album, a very enjoyable piano based jazz-trio. This is the most traditional Jazz from the Jazz Loft 50 yet.
