While I guess I agree with Dave S. that this isn't quite the best jazz album of the year (it ranked very high in the critics' poll), it is certainly a pretty damn good jazz album of the year.
I thought JdJ announced from the stage that the album was going to be music they had recorded at a local club earlier that day. But it's the Jazz Fest performance itself, which I imagine benefited from the rehearsal time.
Great year for Chicago jazz artists. Tomeka in particular was all over the place this year - A performance with a high school jazz ensemble with whom she had been working on AACM stuff was a real highlight of the Jazz Fest.
