Composer Sam Fendrich's latest collection (his fourth for Linear Obsessional) continues in the vein of the shorter works heard on "The Unquestioned Answer", with concise, maximal, dense structures punctuated by allusions to other genres (in this case including jazz, blues and rock) and all employing the restless imagination and mordant wit that characterises his work. "LIFE" (terms and conditions apply) however has an added urgency - all the pieces are recent compositions, worked on in grasped moments throughout a year that has seen a significant amount of personal turmoil.
New out on 12k. This is delightful - just trying to decide whether to buy the download or whether I need the CD. The list of instruments gives an idea of its aesthetic:
"Auris lyre hammered with a black pencil, synthesizer, piano, music boxes, Roland Space Echo RE-201, Ehx 2880, Mackie 402VLZ4, hokema, little objects, crystal cups bowed with a penknife, Koshi chime, Fostex X18, contact microphone, minidisc, Sony TCM-200DV, owl of wood, tape loops, scissor and masking tape."
Germanprof suggests that this is the best thread to introduce one's self.
I'm sorry to say I am not likely to contribute much to this thread. I usually listen to music on random. I have a playlist I randomize of songs I haven't played in the last year. Or I do the same thing with a playlist of tracks, recently downloaded, with less that four plays. So, my usual answer to what am I listening to now is: MusicBee (that's the music library app I use).
I thought it might be helpful to note who my favorite musicians are: The Beatles, John Lennon, George Harrison, Steppenwolf, Caravan, Gong, Buzzcocks, Gang of Four, The Beat, Alison Krauss & Louis Jordan. I enjoy music from most genres. The genres I like best are: power pop, mod, canterbury scene, psychedelic, celtic and bluegrass.
Sometimes I'll tell people that it is a lot shorter, to list which genres I don't like ;-) Music genres I don't have much time for: Opera (I see the attraction but it doesn't interest me enough, to become familiar enough, to get hooked); Rap leaves me cold (items that are humorous sometimes catch my ear); While I like ambient, drone doesn't interest me; noise and industrial I don't get; I like old school metal but the new stuff (especially thrash) doesn't appeal to me; I've downloaded some free jazz but so far I don't get the appeal. I have the impression that a lot (or at least some) of the folks on this forum are into classical. I have a number of classical pieces in my collection but I'm not very knowledgeable about it. The composer I've dug the most into is Chopin. I do like so called world music. However, there are a lot of geographies I've only skimmed the surface of; so there are a lot of holes in my knowledge there as well.
Hopefully that gives you some idea where I'm coming from. I've also been digging into music from the 20's, 30's and 40's so I might be of help to you guys in those areas as well.
@dataGuy There are a couple of knowledgeable-about-classical folk here, but also regulars who between them are deeply into most of the genres you mention. For me, one of the best things about this board has been leveraging the expertise and listening of others to find out about things I would never have found on my own, or to get into genres in which I would not have known where to start. (That and the fact that there is a good steady flow of tips about bargains here on the free stuff thread and sometimes other threads).

Here's a pair of tracks on soundcloud.
ETA, but don't buy it if you have a companion rabbit.

Else Marie Pade - Faust (1962)
- One of her most important works from the sixties.Rest in peace.
Welcome dataGuy! (That's kinda like a super hero name, at least to people like us who burn through so much data). No shortage of variety here!
The 'Cloud' is nice for working out of office
