Iannis Xenakis collection of historical recordings of essential works including Syrmos, Le Polytope de Montreal, Terretektorh, Nomos Gamma, ST/48-1,240162, Achorripsis, Persepolis, Polytope de Cluny
There were some thoroughbreds in that stable. Came across this when exploring deep into the Don Pullen discography. Amusingly, both eMu and Amazon reviews include warnings that this is not the "other" Roots!
Yes, I too am surprised folk on here (most of whom I generally assume to be near-omniscient when it comes to music) do not know them. They are one of obligatory references when describing the origins of various electronic genres. On the other hand, that does not even for me mean that I have listened far into their catalog.
NP, and related:
HAT (Haruomi Hosono, Atom Heart & Tetsu Inoue) - DSP Holiday.
Sort of Hawaiian meets laptop. I bet @amclark2 would like.
Haruomi Hosono - Bara To Yajyu (Rose & Beast)
This is a complete earworm for me; skewed left-field pop that is as quirky as all hell. Check out also the album Pacific which is a sort of take on fake ethnographic music (a la Can). Haruomi Hosono just seems to be a very interesting guy.
I picked up a single YMO CD back in the day when I spent an inordinate amount of my free time (and $) flipping through the racks at used CD stores... not sure what compelled me to buy it back then .... probably listened to it once and then moved on to other things (even then I was buying more music than I had time available to me to properly listen to).
Now listening to (for the 2nd time in probably 17 or so years):
ETA: Wow... Just checked the price of this CD @ Amazon: $69.14 and up. The sticker on the tray of my copy indicates I paid $7.99.
- "Islet are sonic adventurers from Wales. Their reputation for fearlessness has been built on their extraordinary live shows, blurring the boundaries between stage and surrounding environment with their explosive performances. From the group’s inception in Cardiff in 2009 they resolved to be a band without rules, where anything is possible. Each member is malleable, switching instruments and approach to better serve the emotional tone of each track. The love that they have received since forming has much to do with their single-minded attitude and independent ethics; running Shape Records, their own record label; publishing zines and disseminating them for free at live performances; and organising cross-artform gigs and festivals. Their latest release, 2013’s ‘Released By The Movement’ saw Islet work with former Shape Records labelmate, Welsh musician/producer Stephen Black (aka Sweet Baboo), recording stream-of-consciousness sonic journeys alongside unruly maximalist adventures. Islet are Emma Daman Thomas, Mark Daman Thomas, John (JT) Thomas & Alex Williams."
More deep Don Pullen, in a rather different vein than the one last night.
Apologies for not crediting where due on "I Think You're Awesome" earlier...I'll attempt to make good by pointing out the video above is songs from an upcoming new album
Headed to Costa Rica tomorrow, so today I'm packing while blasting some of my all time favorite albums.

Wow ! - I wish you a pleasant holliday.
- "Jason Kao Hwang’s quartet EDGE is nested in the urban mountains of New York City where he created Stories Before Within, personal tales celebrating both life and loss. Over the past three years EDGE has embraced both past and future with musical offerings resonant with human and animal overtones. Their instruments sing through sharp lines vibrating between history, cultures and genres. Cloud Call was composed in 1984, inspired by a Ukrainian street festival in NYC’s East Village. New airborne rhythms and revolutions send this celebratory call aloft. From East Sixth Street is where I lived in Manhattan for eight years in a tiny, $100/month apartment. Same block where Lee Morgan had lived, not far from Charlie Parker’s former home, the East Village is a historic musical neighborhood. In this composition, the energy of that past surges into the present, breaking shackles of negativity to affirm our lives. Walking Pictures emerge after meditation, like a parade of cherished rascals from one’s life that speak of essence and kindle all shades of emotions. Third Sight, a melody influenced by Korean music, was originally recorded by Local Lingo (Euonymus), my duets with ajeng musician Sang Won Park. For EDGE, the arrangement is a prismatic ritual, where the dialogue of spirits leads us to what is unspoken, unknown and unnamed. Embers are seen and felt in the isolation that we sometimes need to see and move forward from."
