Don't know who said it, where they said it, and if it was more than one person saying it, but I agree with the supposition that emusic moved their comment boards over to Reddit so that service complaints were separated from the site itself. I'm sure there's some other benefits to not having a forum on the site itself from an operations standpoint, but I also think they're happy to effectively get rid of the forum without actually killing it, knowing that most people would not bother to create a separate reddit account. As far as I can tell, they don't even link to the Reddit site from the emusic site... not sure if that public comment thing crossposts over to reddit.

I don't personally care one way or the other. Just found it interesting, and noticed how my one post on the reddit site continues to sit there are the top because there's so little activity there. On the other hand, when I (or others) post something on the Jazz reddit page, it gets moved down the board pretty fast as new posts are made.
I was a while ago asked if I was interested in becomming a Reddit moderator, and said yes out of curiosity.

About a week ago I got an email asking if I was still interested and replied:

    - But I do think that the Reddit is a poor substitute for the old message board, for several reasons:

1:  There’s no genre subreddits (such as Classical, rock, electronic and so on) – This means you can’t see if anyone has posted according too your preferences.

2:   On posts, you can’t see the date of the latest reply (only the OP date and number of replies)

3:   New posts on threads doesn’t bump  the thread to the top (makes it troublesome to follow discussions).
    - As some may have noticed, I had an ongoing thread about New and Notable Classical for about 5 years on the old board. With these conditions I really can’t see the point of doing this anymore. (I mean, how many pages do you have to go back in a year or so ?)

4:   The grey blurry fond is very difficult to read and it doesn’t accept double line distance

5:   I really don’t like being exposed to non Emusic content such as dating sites and sexy bikinis, which happens ever so often on top of the postlist.

6:   and I think it is wrong when you create an account, you automatically subschribe to a couple of hundreds of other Reddits.

Because of the points above, I have a hard time seeing the Reddit ever will become a success.
And the answer to this was:
I do agree that Reddit may not be the best solution at the moment (especially given the old message boards in the past), but it’s the best solution for us at the current moment.
    And further:
I’m in the process of developing rules for the subreddit and what we expect from it. For doing this, we can certainly help out with extra credits throughout the month.
    That's not so bad . . .

Remember when you could just re-download everything that you bought as often as you wanted as long as it was still available? That was nice.

Glad the complete album function will return; hard to get a lot with $6.49 account when albums average $6.99. I guess I should just spring for the $6.99 account. $7 an album just seems a lot less cheap for a discount site. I might be done soon too. Although I'm sure I'll be back at some point. I always come back. :)
Well I had a problem today downloading the second of two tracks from a three track album (just to use up my last 2 x 42p tracks before my account rolls over). Second track came up with "page not found" so no music even though the credit disappeared. Fortunately logging out and back in the track showed in My Music and I could "re"-download. First time I've used the feature.
I stress because I've got £39.99 a month tied up in this - I think that I would have been out a long time ago if I was just on a lite sub - hardly seems worth getting out of bed for. Still EMU is supposed to cater for both "lite" and "OCD" users ;-)
  • I don't understand.  Are eMusic members compiling lists of missing labels for eMusic?  Isn't that something the company should be doing?

And is emusic acting like they're caught off guard by the missing labels?  After switching platforms (and all the other recent changes), am I to believe they didn't run a bunch of before-and-after comparisons and not notice, hey, we've got a batch total of this many labels/artists/tracks/etc before but now we've get this much less?  I can't help but think they know exactly how many labels were lost and which ones they are, but are allowing their customers to waste time putting together lists for them because they don't want to admit what the actual damage was.

Maybe I'm misreading something or not seeing the exact picture of what's going on.  Wouldn't be the first time.  But emusic is kind of sketching me out right now.
  • Yeah, seems like they encountered many more technical probs and complexities than expected, and don't have the wherewithal to deal with them. I guess it's hard to bite the bullet and say We have these problems and it's going to take some time to sort them out. I understand their wanting to move on according to plan, but not sure that's a viable strategy when the issues are so plain to see
  • All is really not right with E Music, new Ride album is not available yet and the selection of music is really not good compared to what is was. If it was not for the new Hammock album and the new release from Godwanna records I would think about going. I find it really hard to find stuff at present

  • @Lowlife I don't think the problem is that stuff isn't there; more that it is today; but I have no confidence that it will be there tomorrow.
As ever your mileage may well be different. In any event things aren't progressing well for a whole spectrum of users.

As far as I remember they had to close the eyes and just push the migration button.
     - For some reason postponing wasn't an option.

    - And everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. whole labels "Full album not available". other labels with just a fraction of the content.

Denmark left with no music whatsoever (yes, it is actually true) :#

And the "My music" disaster, Oh man !

I don't know, but I don't think they have any clue about what and how much got lost in the migration.

I made a reddit post about Innova Recordings only had albums from before 2013.
    - This is now fixed and are now spot on release date as they always have.

    There's hope . . . . :)
  • I just got an email from eMusic that says, hey, now you can search by label!

I'm confused (again). Why is this a thing? I've always searched by label on emusic.

Y'know, what? Never mind. I have a feeling there's a lot of stuff I've fallen out of touch with during this whole emusic changeover.

I followed that link in a new tab without signing in and it says all tacks are FREE. However this happened earlier today when I didn't log in before following a Monotyperec link and guess what happened as soon as i logged in? Yep .42p / track as usual. Not that I'm a creep who wants stuff for free but just for half a second there... ;-)

  • I noticed the free things before signing in too - obviously a hook for first-time users to sign up for their free starter credits, but like you I found it mildly disorienting at first as a regular user. I think showing the RRP price next to tracks is probably a smart move - maybe it will sustain the realization that even as prices creep up (not just here, Google Play seems to think $6.99 is a sale price these days) most of the time emusic still is cheaper than buying music elsewhere.

The label search wasn't active before a week or so after the migration, but it is old news.

It seems to me that they are running out of good news and are using the old ones.
    - This is from the blog, june 19:
    eMusic Account Page updates

    • Active membership credits – how much you’ve used for the month and date of expiry
    • Extra credit purchases – date of purchase, amount of purchase, what’s been used, and when it expires
    • Plan details
    • Next credit refresh
    • Option to top up with extra credits or change your plan at any time
I'm tempted to say, what else is new ?

  • I'm beginning to conclude that we are not the kind of person emusic is now interested in as customers. I suspect their 'ideal' customer is younger than the average age profile here, likes indie pop, and tends to not actually download purchases but plays them online. Jonah is right in saying that less new jazz releases are now available here than elsewhere. After I have spent my latest credits, enough for about 10-12 albums, I'm going on hold for a couple of months to see if availability improves. I am struggling more than ever to find albums I really want to download. So a couple of months away ought to help.
  • Today looked to buy 5 albums but only one was available, all from labels and artists that E Music stocks. This I am afraid is typical of what is happening with this company, I am going on hold at the end of the month as it seems that the company is not catering for me anymore
  • A message from @matt (AWOL since April 11) 4 days ago:

RE: The promised classical metadata upgrade:
The eMusic product team has this project scheduled for our news development "sprint". This means that we're looking at a mid-July release for this fix (provided the team doesn't run into any surprises).

There's hope and I choose to believe that Emusic eventually will come around . . .

    Someone from Emusic wrote somewhere:
"We are a small team" . . . I read this as:  "we are seriously understaffed"
  • I just started looking at the new site. It certainly changed. But, isn't it now a pain when you have credit to get half an album and want to finish it off next time? Previously I'd just download the first half and add the album to SFL to finish off next time. Now it looks like I'll be managing a zip file per track or something.

Also, check out the "Similar Albums" at the bottom of this... https://www.emusic.com/album/710258/Various-Artists/Electronic-Saviors-Vol-3-Remission ...I don't think that's a reliable algorithm there.

  • @ethian, be careful when downloading part of an album - at the moment, unless it changed since I last checked,  the functionality for letting you complete a partially purchased album is not in place yet, so if there are album only tracks you still have to pay the whole price to complete it.

    wow, that's a bit awful.
  • They are supposed to be fixing it at some point.
  • The "Complete my album" feature is now live. Note that it doesn't actually say 'Complete my album for $Price" but you will notice the price is lower with every track that you buy.

We will soon change the messaging around it as well so it will be more clear.
  • Great, thanks @nirp. Any idea of the timeline on restoring the labels that are still broken, like Harmonia Mundi?
  • edited July 2017
Our label relations team is working on restoring labels non-stop. Unfortunately these things take time.
  • OK, thanks.
  • Thanks for the update nirp!  I'm glad for the report that "complete my album" is up.  I spot checked my wish list, and I have an album with 6 $0.49 tracks left to purchase.  The album page shows the purchased tracks and reads "Buy album $3.99" which doesn't seem right.  I'll hold off on single track purchases until I have a little extra money in my account to see if this works as intended.
  • Ditto, I have an album, with 5 tracks left to buy @49 cents and it says $4.99.
  • I'm glad to hear that labels are being restored. I'm going on a 60 day hold once I've spent my remaining credits in the hope that when I return there will be more labels there!
  • Thanks @nirp. Hopeful that some of the lost jazz labels will yet reappear. With the change, eMu has gone from being a top site for "indie jazz" to kind of a wasteland - No more than a handful of legit new releases per week.

Also sorry to see the new $8+ price point. As noted above, the difference is trivial compared to Bandcamp or other sites. I simply won't but those albums at eMusic
  • Bit worrying today, no new albums waiting on the list yet, seems to get later and later every week. Waiting to get the Public Service Broadcast album which is due out today.
  • Awful lot of $8.99 albums. I think I'm getting close to being done. (Again).

Black Oragami by Jlin (J-lin at emu) is $8.99; over at Amazon you can get the vinyl, with auto rip, for $8.98! although I'm pretty sure that's a mistake because Amazon has the vinyl at $8.98 and the cd at $28.98, when on Bandcamp it's the reverse.
