The ChatGPT discussion elsewhere, encouraged me to relive the old days by asking ChatGPT’s opinion on what the best albums available on eMusic were in the 2000s and early 2010s, when it was in its pomp.
This was the answer (see below). Interestingly, back in the day, I downloaded tracks from eMusic from 3 out of 5 albums on the ChatGPT list and from all four of the bands named separately. On a beautiful winter’s day, I am now happily listening to a selection of those tracks, whilst looking out at the Pacific Ocean in Lorne on Australia’s Great Ocean Road.
“There were many great albums and artists available for download on eMusic during the 2000s and early 2010s. Some of the most popular and critically acclaimed albums included:
- "Kid A" by Radiohead
- "The Moon and Antarctica" by Modest Mouse
- "Illinois" by Sufjan Stevens
- "Source Tags & Codes" by ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead
- "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" by The Flaming Lips
In addition to these, there were many other great artists and albums available on eMusic during this time, including The Arcade Fire, Animal Collective, The Decemberists, The National, and many others. eMusic was a great platform for independent and alternative music, and there was always a wide selection of interesting and unique music available for download.”
Can I be the millionth person to jump on the bandwagon? Some lovely music but TBH I'm not sure the final rocking out track was needed? It sort of harshed my buzz as it were. Excellent find regardless.
@Germanprof - I've enjoyed everything I've heard that he's been part of so far and these are no exception. Rhythm and Fflux are welcome additions to the library and if I had to pick a favourite album I believe I'd choose Status, however I've really been enjoying Con-Struct with Conrad Schnitzler another relatively new addition.
Well this has been tickling my funny bone in a very pleasant way this morning. Thank you. I may well slip it onto one of my players and listen again this afternoon; we actually have sun and a warm breeze again today in Orkney. This should go well with a beer. Didn't think I'd be saying that about glitch music in 2023!
EDIT
Might have guessed he was on the 3 volumes of the Clicks & Cuts compilations that Mille Plateaux put out yonks ago; and I have here... somewhere!
I bought Contrasts on just about my first visit to the Ultima Thule shop in Leicester many years ago. That was their own tape label at the time. Ah nostalgia for the cassette underground! Enjoy!!
Thanks. see explanation below. I've only ever tried to add 1 album (can't remember what it was) from the archives with .wav files to my iTunes and I couldn't get it to work so as Bart Simpson would say "I've tried nothing and I'm all out of ideas". By the time I get around to the C's again I'm sure I'll have some others from his catalogue and perhaps I'll have figured out .wav files. I really enjoyed what I've heard so far.
Frank Rothkamm - Well, I've done my best to avoid getting any new Samplers and those specials on artist Discographies, but the cheap in me took over and I downloaded his entire collection of 168 albums for $1 US. I originally found him at archive.org and I was looking to add a few more. I picked out 3 then I noticed the entire discography was on sale. I've decided to start with his most recent releases and work my way back to the begin until I feel the need to move on or have been opuses out. The rest are relegated to the external hard drive as space is limited on my Mac mini. Operla (2023)Parallel (2022-2023) Vertical (2022)Horizontal (2022)
^^^ .wav files don’t play in iTunes. Well, that would explain it. Thanks for the tips - another project for next winter. My wife reminded me that the quote should be credited to Ned's parents.
Well, I listened to 20 of the 168 Frank Rothkamm releases so far and although they sound nice, I couldn't find any that made my ears perk up in his more recent releases. Next time through I'll go back to his older material which I found more interesting.
This Frank takes up well deserved space in my vinyl library & hard drive and this time through I've picked out a morning's plus listen of some favourites on this rainy day here. Frank Zappa / The Mothers

That way madness lies, I always try and forget that blog exists, note most (?) are wav files, so start saving for a larger hard drive now...
