Bordando el manto terrestre (Embroidering the Earth's Mantle) is a musical journey around the figure of Remedios Varo, a painter born in Spain in 1908, who lived in exile in Mexico until her death in 1963. This journey begins with an ocean-like motion; driven by the ruin of war and exile, and follows, in Mexico, with the construction of a new intimate space flooded with light and wonder. This is a path of fantasy inhabited by captive moons, weavers of the cosmos and human gardens, and one in which to recover lost harmony and place ourselves in the world again.

Thanks for the heads-up on that Remedios Varo based recording. I got both the LP and CD versions - something I don’t need, but as a limited edition artwork, it looks wonderful. Thanks again!

Always hesitant to make this type of declaration, but pretty sure if I had to compile a list of the most important and/or best jazz recordings of the modern era aka this century, I think "Origami Harvest would have to make the Top Ten, probably the Top Five. A brilliant unity of old and new music influences, its exquisite musicianship, and its thematic message, and probably some other considerations I'm not coming up with as I type this. This is a masterpiece. If I recall, I'm in something of the minority opinion on this recording, but that's a place in the jazz cognescenti I acclimated to long ago.
Anthony Child aka Surgeon. Recorded in Haiku-Pauwela, Maui between 21st January and 8th February 2015 Beats and drones mainly. A nice trip and certainly not cheesy "ethno-forgery". There is also a vol 2 both are on Bandcamp.
Following the recent passing of Astrud Gilberto, I have been revisiting my favourite Bossa Nova records from the 1960s and 1970s. Strange that I was really into this music back in the day, at the same time as I was over the moon about Progressive and Hard Rock!
I can still remember visiting Brazil in the early 70s and walking along Ipanema beach singing “The Girl From Ipanema”!
