Tho most of the people mentioned had very little relevance to me on a personal basis (my personal list of loss would be different), I can certainly see why many people make a personal association with the pop artists of their youth. Music and good times, etc.
Interesting - the only one that really got to me (and probably a third of the British population) was David Bowie, as that was such a surprise, and he was such an icon.
When Bowie died I mentioned to my wife that we will have more and more great musicians and personal idols dying simply because the musicians we care about are all old and about the age people usually die. The big names from the 960s and 1970s, our formative years, are all in their 70s or more now.
Sad as it is, I am not going to be upset when the big 1990s stars start going (assuming I am even alive then).
There's also a wonderful, audio only, YouTube performance with Nikhil Banerjee that's worth hearing and a video of Ghosh with sarod player Ayaan Ali Khan that's a meditative treat too.
I had the pleasure to see them in 1978 at Wembley, one of the best concerts I ever saw. They played all the hits, did the trick of disappearing into a Pyramid will still playing and encored with the Emotions. They were slick, fantastic stage presence and really fun to watch. I have a couple of albums of theirs which I Am is a regular play ob the Mp3 especially of mornings when feeling a bit down
Not sure what to make of the nervous audience laughter on this - perhaps the very idea of "hippies" playing "old-fashioned" music (or maybe just the girls vamping?)
I literally cannot stop watching this. The girl playing cowbell is doing what we used to call hoochie coochie dancing. The nervous laughter and the applause sounds canned.
This probably won't have made the news outside of UK and Sweden but all four of a young band, Viola Beach died in a car crash in Sweden at the weekend. They had already been noticed as a highly promising band. See more details about the band and the crash here
Sir George Martin, although a musician, much better known as the producer of the Beatles. A significant player in the development of pop, then rock music in the 1960s.
Keith Emerson. I was never a big ELP fan but still have a copy of Brain Salad Surgery somewhere. Funny to read in the article that he became good friends with John Lydon. RIP.
I saw him perform with both Nice and ELP. I preferred the work he did with Nice, by the time of ELP some of the live tracks were quite long. A great musician in his time.
Don't really like posting these things, but this man I saw play at least twice. Once in an "Ethiopian All-Stars" gig at The Barbican in London and once with a big group of less than sober mates in Utrecht in the Nederlands playing with The Ex in big party style.
He was on par with many of the more well known vocalists but he never really got the recognition his talent deserved. Nevertheless, he did alright and made good use of his contacts in Hollywood by taking several notable film and television roles.

- So let's all tune in to Penny lane, where the piccolo trumpets was one of his many inputs:

RIP
Spent some days visiting with him in September 2009.
Nice fellow who'll be missed.
