Stunned, was a hero and looking back at my collection its amazing how much of his stuff I have. He was truly an innovator and it will be interesting how much of the unreleased music will now come out. RIP Prince
Wow, also 57. I remember coming across "Christianity is Stupid" while scanning radio channels sometime in the late 80s and it blew my mind a little that that could be on the radio, which was early on in a long process of trying to find music that blew my mind... RIP.
Hell of a shock to me. Been a legit "fan" since SOTT in 1987. Prince's birthday was one week after mine - in grad school in the early 90s, I used to throw annual "Prince & Vince" parties on the weekend between, using a 6-hr Prince mixtape I made on an extended-play videotape.
Last.fm notes my Prince plays trail only Bill Frisell and the Beatles. Huge part of my musical life.
Wow indeed. Just in from the garden to find out this. I just turned 30 when I added 1999 to my vinyl library and he stayed with me until my 40s when he sort of drifted out of my little brain. He found me again in my 50's and I feel lucky that in my 60's he still had that "thing" that moves me. He'll be sadly missed. It's so sad, all these younger folks passing on, my Best Man at my 2nd wedding passed on earlier this month. He'll also be in my thoughts again tonight. So sad.
This is how I want to go out. About 2:00 a.m. on night 2 of First Avenue's 3 nights of all night dance parties for Prince. Meanwhile there were several thousand people outside wanting to get in.
Oh, and I saw Bob Mould before this, and he killed it as always, including a cover of "When You Were Mine" with his tour manager on vocals.
Sadder then sad & it's raining here right now. Kinda purplish through the window. I first got into Lonnie Mack in '85 through Alligator Records. Strike Like Lightning is just terrific, such a unique guitar, and also features Stevie Ray Vaughan. I only have his others on vinyl and cassette so I can't listen to him now, easily. I always promise myself to go back to the beginning & I see Emusic has The Wham Of That Memphis Man, so that's as long as I can hold out.
We lost Paul Smoker and Guy Clark this week, so I'm bringing out some good ones today.
Well, I didn't get to know Paul Smoker but Guy Clark was a big part of my life ever since I first heard The Randall Knife in the early eighties. He'll be missed.
I was happy to see that this thread had moved to the second page, sorry for bringing it back.
Jeremy Steig (September 23, 1942 - April 13, 2016)
OK, this is strange... Apparently, he died over a month ago, but there is no mention that I can find - even at Wikipedia or Discogs, etc., but there's this mention at his website out of Japan.
Talk about gently disappearing...
Little known fact: His father, Bill Steig, was the creator of Shrek!
A good friend recently asked me, "Does someone have to be dead to get played on your radio show?". The answer is, No, Mr. Smart Guy, they don't have to be, but there are those times when tributes MUST be paid. This week is one of those times; the great Chips Moman passed away on 6/13, and Chips, over the years, did the Human Race many many favors with his artistry and energy. SO, this week we'll hear lots of essential and eternally-vital records with Chips's name on them, by artists like Bobby Womack, James Carr, Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, and William Bell. Once the tribute-paying is done we'll hear selections by Karriem Riggins, Bob Dylan, TV On the Radio.. That's enough, I've already given too much away... That's The Bottomless Pit, a "weekly roundup of items from my personal record collection", Saturdays at 10 PM EDT on WFUV Public Radio (wfuv.org).
Igor Bystrov was the man behind Parks. Igor passed away June 21st, 2016. We are extremely saddened by Igor's untimely passing. His music resonated deeply with listeners - a unique combination of ambient, emotional soundscapes, atmospheric IDM and textured electronica. To celebrate Igor's music, we wish to offer for the forseeable future his two releases on Infraction (Hidden & Umber) as free downloads. However, any download funds contributed will be sent directly to Igor's family. Rest in peace friend.

Elvis guitarist Scotty Moore dies aged 84
Umber is a wonderful ambient album.
Suicide's Alan Vega Dead at 78
Also I was surprised to find out how old he was! I never knew the guy from Suicide was older than like Dylan or the Beatles!
