My jazz collection is a lot bigger than it was a couple of weeks ago, and a lot of other great stuff to boot. And I'd say the things I did get are going to lead me to a lot of other purchases in the future. Thanks Guvera!
I just find it funny that with all of the classic rock, jazz, world, and experimental albums acquired from Guvera this month, it's still the sexy pop diva that got me the most excited. No matter how much my tastes expand, I'll always have a soft spot for dance pop records.
SRM, you might find this amusing - skipping over how old I was at the time, I had a Columbia Record Club membership, and This Was was an album I bought purely on whim because the cover was so strange - and it turned out to be a great album.
Sadly, I notice when I vainly check the Guvera site to see if this isn't just a tragic oversight when I go to the channels on the My Guvera page, the cursor arrow turns into hand over the logo of all the other channels but not the Sept. promo - I fears it be deceased, alas.
BigD- during my early years, when experimentation was in order, i used criteria based on combinations of band name, artwork, song length, song title and general appearance of the musicians, usually it had to spark on at least 2. Discovered lots of great bands that way; unfortunately, i also provided homes for many a recorded cur.
Alright, BT, I recognize the first lovely lady but can't think of her name. #2 is off Real World and I was sampling her music the other day. #3 I don't know at all. #4 is Carrie Rodriguez - checking her out now. And #5 is the exotic Miss Sioux, correct? Some help with the others please.
1. Keren Ann (you should know that)
2. Estrelle Morente
3. Lila Downs
4. Carrie Rodriguez (always a few great tracks, always a few clunkers)
5. Linda Ronstadt (younger than the recording I picked up) (I doubt the album, Adieu False Hearts, would be your taste--it's very much in the Hazel and Alice vein)
BTW, Mrs Not-So-Bad Thoughts now wants to replace her copy of Temple of Low Men, only half of which is there.
Doh! I can't believe I already forgot what Miss Ann looks like. I blame it on the lack of album artwork. Now the debate is whether or not to grab her first 2 albums. #5 sounds like a challenge :P
Got Cool Ruler because frogkopf was listening to it and the cover art looked so damn cool. I don't know why but I still care about cover art.
Also got Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy). (For free).
Ended up pissed at frogkopf when I tried to get Gavin Bryars and found it wasn't in the promotion. Oh well,
I don't know why but I still care about cover art.
Oh, I do too!
I am delighted tonight; I found some Dandy Warhols by looking through an old iTunes wishlist, and Guvera has 13 Tales From Urban Bohemia.
THey also have some Golden Palominos, but not Blast of SIlence.
I think I'll look for some World Party after this.
Good to ear somebody's getting happy!
I'm annoyed. I have 8 credits on the Sept Promo channel, but it won't let me get Metric.
Crap. Instead of taking 1/2 hour to get 21 tracks it's been over an hour (OK the TV distracted me somewhat, too)
I was clicking on stuff and noticed this in the search box
artist: 'David+Guetta' album: 'When+Love+Takes+Over'
Might be useful for better searches.
Another lovely morning - finished off Bowie's Aladdin Sane 30th Anniversary, and filled in a bunch of tunes from Freddie King's Shelter Records albums, just in case I never get those cassettes digitized. They are not my favorites, those are from when he was Freddy King, but they are still great stuff, and I must plug the song Same Old Blues - it would make any list of my top 10 favorite blues songs.
For anyone whose interested in Neo-Classical and African music, Opus 1 by The Pan African Orchestra is part of the promo on Real World and makes for a fascinating listen and story.
That would be great if UMG did something similar next month. At this point I'm grabbing just about anything that sounds remotely interesting. Golden Palominos thanks to Katrina. Pan African Orchestra from elwoodicious. Last night it was The Atomic Mr. Basie and Konitz Meets Mulligan after see a best of Blue Note list.
After worrying that I might not have been taking advantage of my chance to get some classic jazz I looked at the list. Over 30 Blue Note releases for me this month! Can't wait to have some nice alone time to really explore it all...

Does this mean I owe them a song? ...If so, I can email them one of my buttload of Crimson Razorback tracks.

Now I am working on Nebula and Fu Manchu. I'm still not sure why some of these artists are part of the promo, but I'll take it.
