The e-book company, which markets a platform called Blio...an enhanced format best suited for children's books, etc. Seems like it could be a good product, although I wonder if the e-book platform wars have already been fought, won and lost.
Learned today about Jason Molina's death and went to play a Songs:Ohia album I had purchased from Emu a while back. I guess I had never listened to it Well the mp3 files were there but they were all 0 bytes. So then I went looking for other such files. I have about 100 of them. A few of these seem to have come from free sampler albums. But also lost a few that are from bands that I quite like though I either never got around to listening to them or somehow downloaded them twice (one good, one bad) and kept the bad version on a merge at some point.
While it's my fault, it's hard to not feel ticked off. IMO, eMusic has pulled a number of customer service faux pas over the years but the worst was probably dropping the ability to redownload without warning or grace period. If they had told people that the ability to reDL was going away, folks would have had time to get their catalogs in order.
And when I look here I see plenty of former members who seem to not miss the place at all. There really is no justification for staying. The hassle factor of dealing with that company no longer justifies the savings.
Anyway, here are the better among the lost albums that I discovered today:
Ida - Lovers Prayers
Loscil - Plume
Songs:Ohia - Protection Spells
Dolorean - Violence in the Snowy Fields
Stars of the Lid - The Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid
Sort of depressing when I see the whole list.
I also have this album which either my wife asked me to DL or it was free at some point. Does anybody know anything about it?
Kaitlyn Ni Donovan - Songs for 'Three Days'
I've been with them for ten years and never completely cut off my membership. I know some people picked up a lot of free credits through their win back promotions and I may start doing that if they are still even bothering.
Free month enticements? I was getting them monthly, but haven't received one since mid-January. I was so done that I didn't respond to any of those "gifts." I started at eMu in 2001, and don't remember now when I left -- my download folder indicates last download in December 2011. I have no regrets.
I've been out for a lot of months now with no free offers. Maybe six months? I don't really miss it either. I sort of miss goofing around on the message boards, especially now that there's censorship, but all things considered it's probably best that I'm not on the boards too.
I've got to the point where I'm almost hanging on against my wishes. My reason for being there basically amounts to being able to get new releases from a few specific labels, like 12k, a bit cheaper. This is at this point unbolstered by any further enthusiasm for the service.
IMO, the change doesn't bode well for eMu's prices. However, I will give Klein et at some due: they avoided being sucked up (Amie Street and Lala), shut down (Limewire), or made irrelevant (mTraks).
@BT - I still don't understand how. It's amazing to me how some companies can hold on despite themselves.
Anyone remember the complaints when there was a daily free download from TOBACCO's Fucked Up Friends? Still one of my favorite finds from their free downloads.
Rats, another $5 credit that's going to make me forget all about all the glitches and problems that have gone on for months, just like the waters of Lethe that made Hercules forget who he was so the scantily clad evil queen could have her way with him. Hmm, I think maybe he got the better deal.
I got an email last week giving me £5 credit for being a member through the last few weeks of problems, but it has to be used by March 30th, so not long. So I thought I could find something from my SFL. but i've tried over 3 hours today and all I get is
Sorry, our site is temporarily unavailable
due to scheduled maintenance.
I am also due to refresh today, so I hope it is not the end, quite yet. But it will be the end for me soon anyway, as the last lot of problems have just been so frustrating - it really is not the same there anymore.
Yes it was the scheduled maintainance BN - but they have only recently started doing that - at least they are trying to improve something! I'm still having problems with the player, but downloading is getting more consistent. Every time I go to emusic and nothing happens I do get concerned that is the end. I'm not sure what this merger will mean - hopefully a better website!
Stopped by the emu forum for the first time in a little while (I think; can't remember last time I was there). Saw this comment regarding why someone who hates emu so much would continue being a customer:
It is like being a Cubs fan, the misery is the new standard of happiness
Not sure it applies to emu, but it sure as hell is an accurate rep of being a Cubs fan. Laughed and pained by that line.
Wow, it seems a radical change in what the moderators are being told/allowed to do has happened at emusic. http://www.emusic.com/messageboard/viewTopic.html?topicId=316191#
I actually find this an encouraging sign - it appears the new owners have actually looked at the discussion board and seen what was wrong with the old communication strategy. Which might mean they are actually smart. Which would be a change for the better.
Yes I certainly agree GP - one of the moderators, Justin (the only moderator?) has started a music discussion thread. Unheard of in the recent past. Certainly an improvement since the change at the top.
My hope is that there is now investment available to improve the site, as that has clearly been part of the issue for the last year or so since the new site was introduced. So far the signs are good.

ETA: Nereffid's priceless comment on the "FUCK !" thread: :-)

It will be interseting to see what happens with the new people.
FWIW - Emusic has worked flawlessly for me for the past week now. - Even the player and the player buttom @ the SFL
- I can't help being optimistic for the future, even though it seems that some subschribers is still having problems.

Ha! That's about the most vicious burn I've ever heard.
