The reason for the question mark is I'm not sure how long it's been there and whether my post counts as news. I only discovered it myself a little ways back (six months perhaps?), and since I've written about their albums before and am relentless in tracking down embeddable audio for my BitW and Wondering Sound columns, I can't believe that I would've overlooked it all this time, y'know? So, I'm thinking their page hasn't been up that long. In any event, so very cool avant-garde music to be explored there.
Albums by Brandee Younger and Daniel Freedman also got included on this list.
Also, worth mentioning that new label additions to the Bandcamp site include For-Tune, which documents some awesome jazz and folk and crazy stuff out of the Poland scene. I've highly recommended some of that label's music in the past, and, in fact, the album Alaman by Power of the Horns made my Best Of list for the year it came out (2014, I think).
Also new to Bandcamp is Pi Recordings. They've been slowly uploading their back catalog and also keeping current releases going, too.
I began this thread six years ago, just to document some of the bare-bones selections for Bandcamp jazz. Now, not only is there more choices than I know what to do with, I'm writing for Bandcamp. Neither strange nor surreal accurately describe what I'm feeling, but both are pretty close.
Strange coincidence: One of the very first albums I associate with jazz on Bandcamp is James Hamilton's "The Causeway Suite." In today's column, a recommendation for the band Drawing Hands is on Hamilton's label, New Jazz Records.
Qq, Jonah - you briefly mention "holiday records" in that column - did any come across your plate you found interesting? Assuming you didn't ignore them all, I suppose - I'm always in the market for some decent holiday jazz records.
I thought I had included it with my Best of BC column, but apparently I forgot to insert the thing in there. It's a Brad Linde project, has some familiar names.
I'm gonna have to look through my lists for the other. But I recall it was more straight-ahead, and it was on a label. Part of me (and this could be totally wrong) thinks it was something released on the Australian label Jazzheads, and it was a collective of their artists. Or maybe it was on ACT Music.
But I think the Tzadik The Dreamers Christmas special was the last holiday album I really enjoyed.
And for the record, I don't ignore any new release that hits the jazz section (well, unless it's an obvious re-issue or best of comp), even if everything about it screams "holiday muisc" or just plain "this is gonna be bad." A couple times a month I encounter an album with a stupid album cover and stupid band name and stupid album title and cool music. Those couple albums per month keep me honest, as well as force me to hit the play button on all of the albums that do, in fact, meet my "stupid" expectations.
And, actually, proof of that is the above Cleats recording... if I skipped holiday music out of hand, I would've missed that neat little recording.
I bought the Brot & Sterne and on a more intent listen am absolutely loving it. Thanks again. Your likes are often a subtle step away from mine, but this one really hit the spot.
It is reaching the point, jazz or otherwise, that you wonder why a label/artist wouldn't be on Bandcamp? You can sell directly to fans, without a retailer taking a cut. Could it be that your "major" labels have arrangements with retailers where they don't sell directly to consumers?
Yeah, y'know it is a thought that hits me now and then when I realize somebody isn't on Bandcamp. I imagine some of it has to do with no time to investigate it, or maybe a wariness toward the next big thing in retailing or, in some instances, it could be that a label is doing well with sales via iTunes and their own website.
P.S. Whirlwind Recordings is (slowly) coming to Bandcamp. New albums are hitting their site now.
I hope the completely self-serving aspect of this post will be offset by what you'll find at the link -- most of the catalog of the German improv label FMP is available at bandcamp: http://destination-out.bandcamp.com/
(Apologies if this has already come up within this thread; I did scroll through but didn't see anything.)
I love those guys. Pretty sure they've had a BC presence for a pretty long time... one of the early adopters... but I could be mistaken on that. And it never hurts to have a reminder they're around. They still upload music to that page and none of it is boring.
The ESP Disc' page is of a more recent vintage, however. A nice addition to BC that fits in nicely with the DO gang.
Besides, this whole thread almost needs a re-purposing. Back when I started it, it was to mention anything relatively decent that was anything remotely close to jazz. With some notable exceptions like Sunnyside Records, back when this thread began, it was a wasteland of jazz options. Now I have difficulty sorting through all the cool stuff that hits the BC jazz aisle.
The more voices participating on this thread, the better.

I have spared you the enormous image, but that is one bad haircut on the male star of this "bittersweet romantic drama."
