If Mr. Elwood's recommendation weren't enough, this would convince me:

Here is a collection of Sufi Music. The link appeared on Awesome Tapes from Africa, looks like this blog is several years old. Low bit rates and the mp3's are not tagged, but the are good for streaming / sampling.
Hailing from different nations, The Toubabs present a CD featuring the African kora and incorporating elements of Swedish folk music and the Indian tabla.
Two members of the group, Jalikebba and Haruna were born into griot families. Griots are a social caste who perform traditional music and poetry, jaliyaa, carrying on the oral tradition from antiquity.
Tommy is an Austrian performer and composer who specializes in the Indian tabla and other percussive instruments. Violinist Sandra and vocalist Kasja are both Swedes.
Jalikebba Kuyateh was born and raised in Gambia, and is a skilled kora player who has performed with many groups in Africa. He is in demand for festivals, weddings, and ceremonies. He also teaches music workshops both at the museum and abroad.
Currently, Jalikebba is the lead performer at the Tanji Village Museum in Tanji, Gambia. The museum presents and preserves the traditional culture and the natural history of Gambia. These tunes were recorded live at the Tanji Village Museum, January 29, 2005
I saw Jalikebba perform with his band two years ago in the Gambia. Most of his music now is more amplified, mixing traditional instruments, such as the kora and balafon with electric guitar, leaning towards a Mbalax style of playing. The evening after the night we saw him in a small club he was going to perform as back-up artist to Youssou N'Dour in the National Stadium. Sadly that was also the day we returned home so we missed that!
As one of the local hip hop fans, I'll have to check it out BN! Although foreign language rap is always a bit of a mixed bag, what with the lyrics being extra important in rap.
That looks a great find BN, thanks. Have you worked out how to download all at once rather than downloading each track individually? The normal download album button does not appear to be there.
For those who enjoyed Flare by Erik K. Skodvin (also in Deaf Center), which is a very good album, there is a live recording of his downloadable from Soundcloud:
A weekly email in which you receive a set of free tracks featuring Chicago musicians (courtesy of those musicians). It looks neat, though I haven't subscribed myself.
Through this "Total Emersion" process, subscribers can quickly and easily explore the colorful culture of Chicago's unique art rock and punk rock scenes.
Whoa, nobody told me I was going to get totally emersed!
Easily Embarrassed are a Dutch duo making instrumental downtempo electronica/"psybient" with a slightly retro feel. This is their most recent full length which I finally dug out and listened to. If you like it enough to support them it can be purchased in the usual places. But it is also released for free at the link above, and I checked with the band in person by email that this was really a legitimate outlet with their blessing. It veers from quiet and gently moody to quite squelchy and rhythmic, some nice tracks. The site linked to, http://www.ektoplazm.com, claims to be
the world's #1 source for free and legal psytrance, techno, and downtempo music in MP3, FLAC, and WAV format, and home of the Ektoplazm netlabel group: Ektoplazm (psytrance), Drumlore (progressive/techno), and Omnitropic (downtempo/ambient).
If you like these genres, and like getting them for free, there's a bunch of stuff to fill your hard drive with here (need a Croatian psytrance compilation? It's here. Some forest-themed darkpsy? That too.). Might make a thread if I ever get time to listen to much of it.
ETA, my favorite unintended pun of recent times: spotted on a visitor comment on the band's website: "Your music always inspirers a gurney of mind and space." A gurney of mind. So would that be a compliment or not?
