If it's taboo to say who we think Doofy has in mind, how are we ever going to find out ?

It was February 5, 2007 when Erased Tapes Records was officially registered. To recognise this day and to thank YOU all for the continuous support you've given us, we have set up a number of events and releases, beginning with a label night at this year's Great Escape Festival and the release of Erased Tapes Collection IV.

A free compilation of eleven tracks by the label’s current roster, it is available to everyone who is registered to our brand new website. Log in/Sign up now for this little treat and follow us on Twitter or Facebook to hear about upcoming events.

ETA, you have to complete registration on their site to get this - not a big deal for me as they released two of my top 5 albums for last year. The track list seems to be selected tracks from existing releases rather than new stuff but is still a nice collection if you don't have them. Includes tracks from Olafur Arnalds, A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Nils Frahm, Peter Broderick, Oliveray (=Nils Frahm/Peter Broderick collaboration), The British Expeditionary Force, and Rival Consolves (11 tracks total). Nice collection, again especially if you don't already own the recent releases of these artists.

I got this album late last year, and like it a lot. It's on the Cuneiform label, which is not on eMu but is on mTraks!

This one is a gem of a discovery from Mmarsupilami, which some of you might remember from the eMu of days of yore. He reviewed this free release and linked to the Guardian article which helps for the non-French speakers. The tl;dr is that Submerse makes J-Garage (J-Pop mashed with 2-Step) and it is absolutely lush and gorgeous.

You can grab the free album here.

If you download one free album today, make it this one. Super-Highly Recommended.
  • Since I know elwood doesn't super-highly-recommend lightly, I'm taking his word on this one, manga cover and all! Will report back...
  • Sunna Gunnlaugs - From Time to Time, free for an email on Bandcamp. "Recorded live at the Nordic House in Reykjavik, Iceland as part of a memorial concert for the late drummer, Paul Motian. We were among 15 musicians that performed exclusively Motian's compositions. We opened the concert with this piece."
  • Thanks Plong 42. It is being downloaded as I type!

Latest in the series of huge free compilations from FutureSequence - Heinali, Direwires, Machinefabriek, Maps & Diagrams, Field Rotation, etc. 41 tracks.

The pattern before has been to have these free for a while and then start charging for them, so get it while it's hot.

ETA: by the way, it's 589 MB to download.
  • David Gilmour - A Pocketful of Stones, free until 11.59pm UK time on Wednesday 7th March.

Have had this a while - was just listening to it and it's actually pretty good post-rock with some vocals. Tuneful and with some energy. Free here.

Free/NYOP (i.e. NYOP with explicit encouragement to download for free and an archive.org link).

    Very pleasant instrumental folky guitar.
Although the title might point in another direction, nobody really sings on “Sing on in Silhouettes”. Fred Baty’s intricate, neo-baroque Folk music is as instrumental as it ever was. Still, Baty enhanced his palette of instruments and while “Sky Diaries” was an unpolished diamond, “Sing on in Silhouettes” sounds rich and timeless. Crepusculum bridges from John Fahey to XTC ca. 1986, bringing forth the melodic complexity of NWOBHM-pioneers Iron Maiden without being heavy at all.
  • Thanks GP - now downloading
  • Well, I press the link BT, quite excitedly. But the anticlimax - Unavailable in your country!!
