greg, re: Herbie Hancock - if that's true, that means you've never heard any of Miles Davis's second great quintet, with Herbie, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. If so, you need to remedy that as soon as possible.
I tend to keep away from the oversized symphonies, but I was curious enough about this composition and this particular recording after reading the notes on Allmusic. Actually, I love it.
I hate it when artists take the intro to a track (sounds that don't actually make up an independent song but just kind of set the scene, like here where it's the sound of someone walking into a club and starting to hear the song that is the next track playing) and make it a separate track so that it has to be paid for separately. Then I end up choosing not to waste money on half a minute of nothing, then I end up aware that the album is incomplete when I play it, and sometimes I end up going back and paying 49 cents just to get the sense of wholeness. Haven't done that yet for this one.
Now listening to PMT#65 Audiobulb Sampler mixed by Autistici - free podcast on iTunes. Track list (but no file any more) here. Some good moments here. Quite an enjoyable mix of experimental electronic/IDM.
Oh, there's another free sampler with similar artist list here.
not sure if it's called balearic or chillwave or something else these days -- maybe it's best to just call it beach rock -- but i'm falling in love with new moon, the new disc from almunia (first time i've heard of this band btw).
When it comes to contemporary Balearica, nobody does it quite as well as Paul Mudd Murphys Claremont 56 label. Murphys own work often in collaboration with guitarist Ben Smith is a prime example of how to get it right. While his releases, and that of the label as a whole, often tick all the nu-Balearic boxes slo-mo grooves, sun-kissed guitars and the like they rarely wander into soft-focus noodling territory, which is a trap that often befalls such enterprises.
This latest audio missive from Claremont 56, the debut album from newcomers Almunia Leonardo Ceccanto and Gianluca Salvadori is another great example of nu-Balearic at its best. Whether theyd appreciate that tag is another matter. You see, while New Moon does indeed tick many of the nu-Balearic boxes, its not your average Balearic by numbers full-length. For every moment of sweet, Smith & Mudd-ish semi-acoustic groovery (see blissful closer Until She Comes), there are three or four others that revolve around echo-laden Peter Green style blues licks, druggy rhythms and deep-fried psychedelic wizardry. This off-kilter mix of dark and light elements gives New Moon an attractively intoxticating feel throughout, also ensuring that it steers clear of the usual clichés.
On the one hand, you have the Peter Green meets lazy West Coast rock of the title track, the drifting guitars and quietly pulsing rhythms of Das Estrellas and the haunting, dewy-eyed early morning melancholy of Electro Blues. In contrast, theres the dark, heavily electronic, dub disco-blues of Travel and Moving Up Slowly, a deliciously dubby concoction that sounds like a cosmic rock-era indie B-Side produced by the Idjut Boys. See also opener L&G Psychedelic, another slo-mo trip into beguiling, eerily bluesy territory. Whether nu-Balearic is another musical dead end remains to be seen, but as long as Claremont 56 keep releasing albums of this calibre, well have no complaints.
really, new moon is much more of an acid-fried guitar album than the typical disc from this genre (aside from the amazing band studio and its offshoot projects, all of which are similarly impressive guitar bands). in my imagined alternate universe, this disc is in the top-40, next to beyonce.
Seven Tales of The North Wind by Rhian Sheehan
The artwork first drew me to this, followed by some positive reviews, and eventually the fact that I needed an album under 4 dollars before some credits expired...glad I took the plunge. Very pleasant. Ignore the emusic "New Age" tag - it's good ambient.
Erik Lindeborg Trio - "Time"
-Outstanding album. The sonic qualities of Robert Glasper and McCoy Tyner's talent for sussing out the epic nature of a song. This is one of those albums that gets me excited each time a new song begins, that the album, thankfully, is not yet over.
Kargatron - re Herbie Hancock. I've not knowingly listened to any before. My jazz listening/understanding, whilst getting better, does have some major gaps I'm sure. I've probably missed out entirely on MIles Davis from the late 50's era to Bitches Brew. That was one of the few jazz albums I listened to then at the time it was released - I came to Kind of Blue decades too late! I'll certainly be investigating further now, thanks
A new release, showcasing their ten years together. Some tracks have been issued previously, but all are new recordings
The dynamic duo of English folk celebrate their 10th anniversary with a "best of" that offers fresh recordings of standouts from their five albums together (aside from their founding role in big band Bellowhead). With Spiers's squeezebox and Boden's fiddle in pride of place, they romp through favourites like "Rochdale Coconut Dance" and "Prickle-Eye Bush" with help from fellow travellers including Eliza Carthy and Nancy Kerr. Boden's theatrical vocals add a music hall flourish to antique ballads such as "The Birth of Robin Hood", and whether it's a stately dance ("The Cheshire Waltz") or a sea shanty ("Haul Away"), joyousness reigns.
Took and collected my grandaughter to nursery earlier. She's just over two and a half (born the day Obama was elected). We used to have to listen to Classic FM, as she likes violin playing. But for the last three weeks there has only been one choice for her
I did try some other things today, but no it was Adele she wanted. Even at that age they are music consummers!!

Been rather pre-occupied lately. Almost screwed up my month with eMu. Fortunately I had albums like this that I had been waiting on.
Liking this.
0,49 euros in Denmark :-) - and truely wonderful music !
Glad to see they have an EP now. If you haven't seen the video for "70 Million", it's brilliant. And the song is catchy as hell.

Hmm. Glad I only paid pennies for this at Amie actually.
