I'm good with the review, though I ran into that awful situation Saturday afternoon where I really had my writing groove on, my thoughts were focused, I was feeling both creative and analytical, and then had to walk away from the piece about two paragraphs before completion, and couldn't get back to it for another 36 hours. The end of my review seems a bit disjointed from the rest of it, but whatever, it's good.
Things seem a bit quiet at the moment, no?
I've submitted a Classical Highlights thing, in the new and improved format.
Hopefully another history chapter by the end of next week.
Also thinking of doing something about "L'Olimpiade", a somewhat unusual baroque opera album - or is it possible that we might have a thematic series of Olympics-related music posts in a couple of months??
I'm half considering a review of a recent album, but am still deciding if it's really good enough. On the road this week, busy speaking schedule, so not much time to listen/think. I have another piece in mind too but it might not come very quickly given current schedule...
Have been meaning to ask this for a while, so while it occurs to me (and hoping I didn't already ask it and forget): is the mission-critical stuff regarding Music is Good distributed in sufficiently redundant ways to survive possible mishap? Not wanting to be morbid, but if Dr. Mutex were run over by random herd of stampeding elephants or a meteor landed on Craig's office, would anyone be able to take the reins in terms of access to backups, basic admin passwords, etc? Are the backups in more than one place?
I am not asking for increased access to anything, or implying that anyone is not doing their part, just wondering if the whole thing could go down if the wrong person had a sudden unexpected accident. (The thought was sparked by the episode a while back when it was down briefly and we were trying to remember people's email addresses).
I just asked Alamaailman Vasarat for a review copy of their new one; will work on that when it comes or when I buy it instead. (Might need to check every genre tag in the list for that one!!) I have an unsolicited review copy of a Spheruleus release that's sounding good on first listen - need to give it some more listens before deciding whether to review. I still have this neat idea in my head (which is not necessarily a predictor of it being a neat idea when translated into actual sentences) for a 4-part article series that's not reviews but about how we listen in general; but my summer has turned out to be remarkably tightly scheduled. We'll see how things go - I do have some very long flights coming up, so might be able to get to the the reading I'd need to do then.
@greg, how about writing a roundup of the highlights of all the free African music you posted today, with brief reviews of your favorites? There would be no need to write a lot about any single one.
Just so you know what to expect from me, here are a couple of parameters of my next month and a half.
I have committed to reviewing the latest Alamaailman Vasarat release and hope to get to that by the start of next week (see below).
I also have another review copy in hand that I hope to do some time in the coming few weeks.
From Monday I have a pretty intensive 6-7 weeks of speaking and workshop leading. There are relatively few down days. I might surprise myself (and will have some time on planes some days), but I think it's safest to assume MiG productivity will not be likely during this spell.
I'll see if I can get a music memory paragraph done for the collaborative piece before next week. Caveat on that and the above is this week is busy too, getting ready for what follows.
(How the current conversations go in my head: Correspondent: "What's the title of the lecture you'll be giving for us on August 13?" Me: "How would I know, that's, like, 20 talks from now." (Public me: invents suitably vague title to allow for later inspiration.))
I hit a wall in writing a couple of weeks ago, but the last couple of days have been good, so I think I might have another History soon, hopefully by Monday. Maybe then I can up the pace again.
I have the Valta review written, but am in Sydney and paying for WiFi by the hour and mostly keeping on top of email. I will find time to upload it and do the links etc. soon. I think maybe I have free WiFi at the next place I'm staying, at the weekend.
@Greg, Oh, I have lots and lots of air miles... United are pretty nice to me these days as well when I interact with them. Glad Nereffid has a piece to go up, that means I don't need to hurry too much. Still need to find time to translate the Finnish song titles to see if I'm missing anything. Not much free time now - have not even listened to music for 2 days.
Having spent Thursday and Friday at an academic conference, which I did enjoy, but was very tiring, I do not envy you at all GP, even going to Australia.

I'll get on that now.
Should have an article next week, though.

I'll hit the last couple later in the day... spread them out a bit... just not as much as I did last time.
