Jeremy Siskind - "Finger-Songwriter"
Trio of piano, vocals, and woodwinds. Yesterday, I was muttering how sick I had gotten of jazz vocals albums, that I needed a reprieve for a couple months. Then I put this album in and forgot all about that. SUB-lime. Vocals are more like a Tom Waits refrained swoon. Piano is a cool breeze, but can hop when needed. Woodwinds just float so pretty. Wow.
There are a couple free-on-bandcamp albums in the Vortex column that I was gonna include in an MiG best-of-bandcamp jazz article that just never got written. I'm so far behind on everything right now, it's awful.
I remember the Vortex club when it was in Stoke Newington, I lived down the road and apart from the club it has a big bookshop where many a good book was purchased. Also in this area was the first version of the Jazz Cafe which was also tiny and if you were late you had to watch the gig on CCTV!
I saw a few gigs there in the 80's but for the life of me I cant remember who played . One of my friends helps out at the new version, he loves it and gets to see lots of great bands.
Been to my local library yesterday and this was one of the items I got:
That White Rainbow comp I played above is nyop at Bandcamp, and seems to me to have some nice droney stuff. Also, Denver, you mentioned Glass, Part and Gorecki; do you like Terry Riley? He seems like more on the drone end of modern classical. I think some of his work is available cheap on amazon.
@amc2 - I liked it, a rework of American folk standards, plus God Save the Queen!! Some are totally reworked, others less so. The band reminded me of the backing from Cowgirl in the Sand era - no surprise, mostly the same people. Certainly different for him in the last decade or so. I streamed from the Guardian website - Lowlife put the link on another thread, but not sure if you can access it in the States.

ETA, Track #3 on this is a thing of exceeding beauty.

Speaking of the 90's, I was discovering electronic while keeping an ear firmly on the local punk scene and playing in a Jazz trio. Then I met my wife.

How's Americana Greg?
