OK, I never expected to fall in love with Keith Godchaux's keyboards.
  • @thom - Ghostly are giving away old Kiln albums?? That's a good one. Fyrepond might be their best track.

I'm in Switzerland at the moment, and as far as I can recall, I think this is the only Swiss band in my collection. Fortunately they are very good. One of these days I am going to find time to tag my collection by country (that and "label" are in my mind the two most criminally absent tag fields in iTunes) - I like associating music with places when I travel.

@Lowlife - thanks for the welcome back! We're off again on Monday and with other things on this is probably my last day here for almost a couple of weeks. Yes, I'm looking forward to the season too, but Man U's game has been moved to Monday so I'll miss that, as we'll still be on the train to Munich for most of it, and I won't be able to use Sky Go then. My brother-in-law invited us for the weekend before we travel, so we knew Spurs had an away game! It is a marathon, but a good start is needed when every point counts, as both Spurs and Man U fans know from last season. Best wishes for your anniversary.

I was noticing how much I liked the piano on this too. I'm kinda glad the Dead sale is over - it was a constant temptation. I ended up with, this, Dick's Picks 8 and 3, and Nightfall of Diamonds. Plus the rap sale was on, and I just managed to catch Paid in Full before the flash sale ended. So a week of mostly Dead and East Coast hip hop.
  • I'm kinda glad the Dead sale is over - it was a constant temptation.
Here, here! I only picked up Europe 72 because I was torn between too many Dick's Picks (either I didn't like the mix of songs (like #1) or I felt too much was being packaged together (like #28)) . The surprise sale on Music From Big Pink sucked up some of my budgeted money as well. I also got #19, which I absolutely love.

The other thing I'm excited about this week are all the free New Weird Australia comps.
  • Picked up the 6 CD Big Box Of Blues last week from Amazon (sold by the beloved Newbury Comics) for $14.90 and it is some great stuff - a lot of early R&B'ish tunes, with horn sections, a very respectable roster of artists, including some Chess people, lots of styles. No liner notes, bare bones but some nice meat on them. Some of the usual suspects are alternate versions or live tracks but it's all been good. Lord knows I have ?how many? of these songs already but at $2.50/CD I had to have it. I love a good blues comp, and this one's like having 6 ready made playlists.

    >OK, I never expected to fall in love with Keith Godchaux's keyboards.

OK, I never expected to fall in love with Keith Godchaux's wife. At least her vocals. (Check out the Zen Tricksters, for more Donna Jean vocals).

    >I'm kinda glad the Dead sale is over - it was a constant temptation.

I agree, I bought four, Dick's 22 and 24, Nightfall of Diamonds, Crimson, White and Indigo. And the new Dave's Pick is coming in the mail soon....!

Is it wrong that I'm enjoying the bonus disc more than the album?

Is it wrong that I think I might like them better as an instrumental trio?

    Probably.

Aaron Roche & Tim Hinck - Plainspeak
    - "Aaron Roche and Tim Hinck have taken folk and modern classical music to another dimension entirely. The 4-D result is plainspeak, their new album recorded with members of the Chattanooga Symphony, Lambchop, The Cherry Blossoms and Silver Jews.
Plainspeak beckons with with the familiar (fingerpicked acoustic guitar, Roche’s pure voice) and rewards with the and avant garde (the reverb saturation of “Saraburi Provence”, Hinck’s arrangements for winds and strings on “A Weaker Vision”). Heretofore unexplored, Roche and Hinck apply George Martin’s aesthetic to brilliant, minimalist folk."

  • @germanprof - Yup, they just posted a second one, too (Sunbox). Can't believe I never heard of these guys - brilliant.
  • @thom, I guess at least for a while it makes a lot of sense for labels to throw older releases that are probably not selling much any more up on their drip.fm feed - it increases value for the subscriber, keeps the feed active, and represents at least minimal income for stuff that probably wasn't making much anyway (or looked at another way helps secure steady subscription income rather than people dipping in and out). Yes, Kiln are good value. I've read that they don't tour or promote, just drop an album every now and then.

This is free on iTunes. It used to have its own website - that's where I got it from - but that does not seem to be there any more.
