That Harmonia Mundi compilation has sent me off on a potentially expensive foray into the ample and exciting catalog of Chucho Valdés (booster sale please, emu) - why did I not know his music? The chagrin of ignorance is nicely outweighed by the pleasure from the fact that I get to "discover" gems like this. Parts of this album are just enthralling.
@Germanprof You might be the last person I would have thought of for that Chucho Valdes album, but on revisiting last night it makes perfect sense. It's one of those "Best of Year" acquisitions that I never spent enough time with. Really a unique and soulful meditation on African -> Cuban -> Jazz music, with the "classical tinge" that always comes from Cuban musicians.
@Doofy, the biggest and most-played sector of my jazz collection is piano trios, and within that the stuff that grabs me the most is the kind of piano playing that both sparkles and surprises. Chucho Valdes really hits the spot on his solos.

Spotify listening, prompted by this NYT Playlist column. Won't be long before I check out the Sarah Vaughn that's mentioned too
