I really REALLY like this album. I only bought it because I've been in a Radiohead mood lately and felt like something new. I wasn't crazy about either of the songs they made videos for (the first two tracks), but I've always enjoyed this band, so took a chance on it. Also, I took a trip into Lexington specifically to go to the cool music store on Limestone and buy some new CDs. I was there to buy.
But this whole album grabs me from first note to last... including the two tracks I was meh about. Not being distracted by the videos, I was much more able to listen and appreciate the tunes. Pretty addicted to this recording.
Being as I am out of the loop, I'm not sure what the reaction has been among the more hardcore Radiohead fans. I wouldn't be surprised to discover they didn't care for it. I think the same things that appeal to me about this album are some of the same things that I liked about Amnesiac, and I think that album wasn't too well thought of by the fans that would prefer the edgier Kid A sound. But that's all guesswork and assumptions right there.
In our race towards modernity, amidst all the technological innovation and the rapid growth of our cities, silence is now quickly passing into legend. Beginning with an ode to John Cage’s seminal silent composition 4' 33", the sights and sounds of this film delicately interweave with silence to create a contemplative and cinematic experience that works its way through frantic minds and into the quiet spaces of hearts. As much a work of devotion as it is a documentary, In Pursuit of Silence is a meditative exploration of our relation-ship with silence, sound, and the impact of noise on our lives.
Revisiting this album that featured the great Ry Cooder in a psychedelic band. An interesting (or not) bit of trivia is that Amon Düül II were so influenced by this album that they lifted the name of the track "Dyl" from it to form the name of the band. Also, includes the famous 60s and 70s session drummer Jim Gordon who lost his mind over the years and killed his mother with a hammer in the 80s.
Well, I used the last of my $75 boosters to start to fill another big hole in my iTunes library in Sept. I've been meaning to do this since Brighternow first started posting about them many years ago and have been looking forward to getting to the Rs. Thanks. The Residents
