I was clearing my email inbox and found this. Could very well come from a rec. from someone here. (?)

    - Could be a comment to the global situation ATM . . .

    ETA: Oh! . . . It was a Sir GP rec. . . Thanks !

  • La Leyenda De La Hora

I don't think there's much Latin Jazz love on this board, but anyway here's McCoy Tyner with Paquito D'Rivera, not to mention Bobby Hutcherson, Chico Freeman and others, back in 1981

Been listening to the Dixie Dregs all morning. Such a great band.

Muito amor from me! For those people and bands that favor either sides of the mix.
  • 3-Way Mirror

@rostasi In that case I'll proceed with this obscure little album by Mr. & Mrs. Latin Jazz themselves. Joe Farrell's last recording I think
  • I need to make a Random Radio mix of some favorites,
but it'd have to be ongoing because I have decades of
hundreds of latin music goodies - both traditional and
jazz-based that I like. You're right about that being
    Farrell's last album.
  • Eumir Deodato had a little known ensemble called Os Catedráticos which is having an album re-release next month. Features some short classics like "Os Grilos" and "Tristeza" on it.

  • Viva Brazil

Most of my Latin Jazz is through albums like this, other than of course Getz/Gilberto and similar. This cover so reminds me of going to Ipenema Beach. I've got a photo I took that is very similar

  • Five disc set of Mingus in Detroit at the Strata Concert Gallery. More open and
freewheeling style that's closer to the energy of his live early 60s recordings.
Don PullenJohn Stubblefield and Joe Gardner are joined by the great
Roy Brooks instead of the usual Dannie Richmond and it shows in a good way
because Brooks at that time was really hot and energetic in his playing, creating
the perfect fuel for this session.

  • Back to this. This is absolutely luscious.
I mean, you really can’t go wrong with these women.
Caterina Valente doesn’t just go thru the motions of
Corcovado, she absolutely oooozes it in an almost
kitten-like voice that’s right up there with Astrud’s
famous version. You have Alaide Costa with the great
Baden Powell. You have the sultry, near-baritone of
Maysa doing Agua de Beber and a wonderful peek at
4 tunes sung by Dolores Duran (A Noite Do Meu Bem
will bring tears to your eyes) with 10 interpretations
of her songs. Ella Fitzgerald said she did the best
version of My Funny Valentine she’d ever heard.
Unfortunately she died of a heart attack at age 29.
I had to laugh that it was released on Cherry Red Records -
a label known mostly for punk and post-punk classics.

  • Great new-ish release from Dinosaur, with Laura Jurd in fine form - going to grab this in the Edition Records sale with thanks to @soulcoal

  • I'm all about Mingus in Detroit for the rest of the afternoon. Especially excited about this as a Don Pullen aficionado. Good info on the label page: https://www.bbemusic.com/downloads/mingus-jazz-in-detroit/

  • Another really excellent recent jazz release, also in the Edition sale.
