An England Story (The Culture Of The MC In The UK 1983-2008)
This is the 2 disc version of a difficult task of stuffing 25 years of UK dancehall, reggae, ragga and assorted into about 85 minutes. It’s got the first example on disc of UK “fast chat” with Papa Levi’s, “Mi God Mi King” and Jah Screechy's “Walk and Skank” (think: SL2: “On a Ragga Tip”). Ending with the faux-fun Cockney accent of neighbors complaining of next door heavy bass: Tippa Irie - “Complain Neighbour.” Too much hip-swivelin’ goodness for just two discs … so a Volume Two followed.
Avant jazz from Marshall Allen, Fred Frith, Terry Riley, & schoolkids!
You are currently contemplating a recording of myth and wonder. The Saga Of Padani presents the odyssey of 1990’s 4th, 5th & 6th grade students from novice musicians into an avant garde ensemble – an ensemble that engenders an array of sonic textures which never remain static or stagnant, but flow in a way that it’s always surprising, often startling and astonishing. On many of these imprecise, meditative, ethereal soundclouds of wonder and joy, the children were joined by such luminaries as Terry Riley, Fred Frith, Dave Slusser, and Dave Gordon, Tyrone Hill, & Marshall Allen of the Sun Ra Arkestra!
There was a time (early 70s) when the jazz purists would sneer at anything coming from Creed Taylor’s label - especially a minor “hit” with a funky large band version of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" like this album had. CTI Records' reputation has actually survived well-intact after all of these decades as it should with the resurgence of MOR in classy leggings. Vermouth in its marrow cushioned by the likes of the creme of the crop session-men of this era: Hubert Laws, Bill Watrous, Marvin Stamm, Billy Cobham, Stanley Clarke, Ron Carter, a.o. Highlights: “Also Sprach…”, Ravel’s "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Fawn" and Cobham’s "September 13."
Celebrating the unpolished, the confidential, the defenseless and the crazed, R. Stevie Moore is a great-grandfather of lo-fi and the wandering troubadour of the American version of outsider music and hypnogogic pop. This album was his first official studio album that was recorded for his uncle’s small record label and he’s done over 400 records since this one. Beautifully sparse, rickety, outlooker songwriting that’s gained the adulation of people like Ariel Pink, The Residents and Chris Cutler. This, and his album “Phonography”, were good enough starts for him, so should it be for us.
Thanks to @Brighternow for starting this exploration last May that I will finally get to hear. Art Zoyd - Gérard Hourbette and a host of others(still lots more exploring to do).
from the Archive Exclusive to Sandpiper Records. Recorded in London in 1981 as part of a series of european Rock in Opposition concerts, this marks the experimental French group at their zenith. A challenging live set mixing electronics, avant-garde jazz & baroque classical. Recommended for Magma, Univers Zero and Henry Cow fans, and those who like music that sits outside any form of convention.
Note- A lot of Sandpiper's releases are available there.
@confused - getting ready for the new Alejandro Escovedo album? it has a release date of 9/14, I did the preorder on Bandcamp, two tracks are available now.

For sure I'll get around to it eventually. I first came across him back in the 80's in my vinyl glory days when I would spend many hours flipping through racks of records at used/new record outlets for something that would catch my eye. Luckily I came across these
1982 - Sundown 1986 - True Believers No Discogs back then, some copies of Jerry Osborne's Official Price Guide to Records and one from Rolling Stone as my references. Just holding the albums bring back lots of memories. When the library was smaller things got played a lot more often than they do now. At any rate, that String Quartet live album still remains a favourite listen. He really is a terrific songwriter.

- also lots of part albums if anyone's interested. I picked up half of The Idea Of Wood and the Archive tracks there and lucky for me it included the album only track from Emusic. As I've been clearing out most singles and part albums, I'm not keen to start adding any more.
Beck - Sea Change - I’ve been going back to Beck a lot lately after ignoring him for a long while
