"Through A Glass Darkly" by London Underground

I particularly like the track "Travelling' Lady" which is a cover of the 1969 Manfred Mann Chapter Three song

A bit of this and a bit of that if you will.

  • @djh rather different versions of London Underground!
  • Chicago Underground + two of my mates from the London improv scene. I always check what Rob Muzarek is up to, can get quite psych at times.

Ps I've only listened to the Conjure albums once in the last 6 years although Lastfm shows
they have been listened to 9 or 10.     Criminally under listened!

They certainly got me think about my first half of this life so far and also this future we're
facing that seems to just keep repeating. :'(

    In War Such Things Happen

My wife and I watched 1917 for the first time this weekend and couldn't help crying thinking
about those poor folks in Ukraine who are still fighting in the trenches.

    - Well, that was one terrific morning listen!
-- Also a big thanks to the Cool Quartet, I only wish I could have afforded to
get your Bandcamp release. This has a little bit of everything I like about
listening without headphones. Natural sounds you hear while the music plays.
And yet, I might just pull out the headphones and see how that goes.
          - I don't want to forget Éric La Casa. Most enjoyable to these ears!

    Elephant Sleeps But Still Remembers
@jonahpwll you posted about this recently and it caught my eye. It was one I didn't know about, so I sampled it on youtoube and liked what I heard. I looked on discogs marketplace and found a very good condition CD copy for sale signed by Jack DeJohnette for a good price, so I ordered it. Two days later they cancelled my order and sent me a refund. Then a few hours later they said that was a mistake and it had shipped. Then they asked me to pay them afresh via Paypal, which I did because tracking said it was underway. Then it got held up in Detroit. When it arrived, it was well packaged in bubble wrap but the mail folk must have run a truck over it a few times, because the plastic CD case is in tiny fragments and has partially shredded the liner notes. But the CD is indeed signed and plays fine, though two tracks took a couple of tries to rip accurately. As for the music, I am LOVING it, so thanks for the adventure!
  • Per the music that @Brighternow introduced us to and @confused post. As the image doesn't come from the web I'm having trouble copying it here. It's just 4 photos from the gig anyway.

Excellent. New on LINE. The source recordings are from where I grew up, which adds a dimension for me.

That's quite the misadventure.  I actually can't figure out what happened to my old copy, but I saw it recently at my local music store and scooped it up.  It's been nice having it back in play again.

Scanning through what people have listened to recently, sent me to find my LP of this, which i can now play on my Christmas present turntable! Thanks Confused.

Confused also mentioned the film 1917 - see it if you haven't already. Talking about Ukraine, we had a family living with us for 6 months last year, who have now moved on to their own home. They visited us a couple of evenings ago and Svetlana was telling us about how her sister heard the planes and bombing last weekend quite closely to where they live in a small town outside Lviv, far from the action so far. it is hard to imagine such things....
  • New from the ever excellent Durand. As delicately beautiful as ever.
  • Music Box Music by Joseph Kudirka
As the title suggests, the album is entirely made with music boxes and is based on compositions which were sent to him by friends. Over the course of the several lockdowns, Kudirka carefully translated these compositions (read: punched holes) into suitable sheets for the instrument. Given the sole use of these music boxes, it’s not a surprise that the overall sound of the album has a fragile and tactile touch. However, the nature of the compositions add a modern substantial layer resulting in a surprising and refreshing take on this instrument.

    Free/NYOP and rather lovely.

  • The last of last months Bandcamps purchases before yeasterdays BC Friday snook up on me.

Kasper Bjørke – Mother & Standing On Top of Utopia

Eyvind Kang – Virginal Co Ordinates & Loctian - Ghost Frontiers

Sarah Davachi - Antiphonals & Barons Court

Madwort Saxophone Quartet - Live at Hundred Years Gallery & Nate Wooley - Ancient Songs of Burlap Heroes

Madwort features two of my old friends from London improv days and the Hundred Years Gallery was probably my favourite small venue for same, run by friends who we tried to support as mush as possible. Sadly the odd download is as close I can get these days. Seeing their weekly gig listings is like an itch I can't scratch...

  • This one also dropped yesterday from my Cantaloupe sub. Confusingly the album is six years old. Keys, bass and drums commissioning new repertoire in modern classical music for a formation which is much more common in jazz. Don't let the punning group name put you off.
