I've been aware that I'm listening to too much instrumental music (because it's easier for reading) and a friend prompted me to return to the Richard Dawson / Circle album Henki because well Dawson is Mr Lyrics and I'm a fan of Circle since their first UK tour many years ago. The Ruby Chord is Dawson's latest and features Rhrodri Davies on harp amongst other folk. Title track 41 minutes followed by 6 other tunes over a similar length of time. 10 minutes into the track The Hermit and it's all instrumental so far - ho ho!
On the prog front, first new album since 2018 from Riverside, and after the first several listens my ears say it's very good. Different from Wasteland (which I thought excellent), some nods to their earlier sound but some real departures too (I never expected Riverside to sound as much like A-Ha as they do in the first minute of the first track, or that I would like them if they did). Reviewers seem divided on whether the lyrics are a strong or a weak point, I can see both sides - they are kind of direct and simple but work for me in context. Anyway, a recommended listen.
Gorgeous ambient music, often with dense harmonics... more like heavy river currents than a thick fog. On Kranky, which should tell you what's what. I really like their earlier recording "Solifuge."
Ps - Wow! I'm reminded what a terrific listen these are.
I was wearing my Santana first s/t album t-shirt to personal training the other day and my trainer said to me "Who's Santana?"! And he was being serious!
Mind you, he doesn't know who The Doors are either - is that probably even worse!!??
^^^ @peterfrederics - I know what you mean, mind you, the grand children (who are well into their teens now) love giving us the gears because we don't have an iPhone (yet).
Céleste Boursier-Mougenot produces music in surprising and unexpected ways through large- scale acoustic environments. Boursier-Mougenot's immersive sonic installation, From Here To Ear, introduces a flock of 70 brightly plumed Zebra Finches to a gallery-turned-aviary to live among iconic Gibson Les Paul and Thunderbird bass guitars. At turns ambient and melodic, a constantly changing soundscape emerges as the finches explore their environment, eating, nesting and perching on the amplified instruments.
Several of my friends in Franks APA went over to Utrecht to see the latest edition of the Le Guess Who weekender. One of them mentioned enjoying a set by these folk. Imagine if you will a Slovenian take on New Weird America. Folk drone psych. 5 tracks, the first four of which are 15-20 minute blow outs. A long list of traditional instruments involved. Lovely to get lost in. The cover won't prepare you for the music.
Re above post In it's own way I find it refreshing that (some of the) younger generation hasn't a clue about Santana or The Doors (I love them both but I'm just of an age). Why should they? The world turns.
Talking about Santana, one of my first downloads from eMusic was "San Mateo Sessions", a set of demos from before their first album. It is has always been one of my favourite Santana albums
